Hi Corinne
My family came over from Ireland around 1800 to Birmingham and ended up in Whitwood Castleford for the last 150 years. Iknow some other families that did the same.
It was because deep mining started in Castleford and they needed specialist miners. The companies advertised far and wide.
The names i know of are ...Powell. Gill. Slattery.Gibbon.Townsend. There must be  thousands from Ireland.
Its only this year that i found out we are of Irish blood (very proud i am too) but am still trying to find out which county.
If i can be of any further help please ask, its a fascinating subject.
cheers

hi, all
my ggggranddaddy Nicholas Powell got married at a c of e parish church Rowley Regis on 5th April 1847 to Elizabeth Sheldon. Witnessed by John Hickman & Elizabeth Palmer.
My question is which church would this have been? and would any further records be available.?
I already have a copy of marriage cert, but would parish records give me any further info on this family.
I ask because i am trying to trace his father James Powell occupation soldier born Ireland.

Thank you AMBLY for your help

so much info to take in, dont know where to start? :-\

Could you sum up which certs i should apply for first? ???

I have already been in touch with Tweezer and RWMarsh to see which certs they have. Hopefully getting all the info together as a joint venture we may be able to crack this mystery.

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH :-*

Castleford had its own magistrates court and the local paper is The Pontefract & Castleford Express. Still with offices in both towns.

Happy hunting
