Stirlingshire / Re: Alexander Rennie in Kilsyth - grave marker

Can I just make a couple of points.
1. I believe the Deacon title was because Alexander was a Deacon in the Church of Scotland. The position is very rare nowadays, but there are a few Deaconesses. They were semi-trained for ministry.
2. The shield on the stone with the date 1661 was copied from a much older stone which lay beside the one shown in the thread. This earlier stone is completely worn away, as is the more recent one. I have a photo of the more recent stone with reasonably clear inscriptions. Like my cousin, TropiConsul, I don't know who AM and AG with 1745 refer to. They may have been the initials of earlier ancestors.

The photo is not of Wellcroft House at 80 John Street, but of the house called Wellcroft at 11 Glasgow Street. John Rennie, who lived at Wellcroft House until his death in 1937, was a second cousin to my grandfather. I've visited his house. Here's a fairly recent photo of it.

I can send you details of our common ancestors prior to Alexander Rennie, the father of James Mathie Rennie. We go back to the 1600s. Incidentally, it transpires that Alexander's wife was actually Elizabeth Ker, not Kerr or Carr as we had originally believed. I have your grandparents on my tree, and would appreciate details of your branch.

Thanks for all that. Do you know what happened to Francis Paterson Dunsmore? He was born on 7 July 1900, but I have no information on what happened to him. I'd be interested in further details of the rest of the family in the USA.

I have some information on the Kessington Rennies. My g-g-grandfather was an older brother of James Mathie Rennie. There were 4 children: Alexander, Mary, James and Elizabeth. Mary and Elizabeth married and had family. Mary married John Simpson Dunsmore, who was from Airdrie. They had 10 children, 3 of whom had children. Elizabeth married James Stevenson from Carluke and they had 4 children, 3 of whom had children.

I have a lot of information on the Rennies from Kilsyth. The Rennies from Smiddyhill (or Smithyhill) were related to my family and I have a family tree showing all the connections.
