London and Middlesex / Lunatic Asylum - Suggestions?
« on: Sunday 24 August 14 22:46 BST (UK)  »

Hi all,

If a working class person living in Homerton in the 1920s/1930s and had a nervous breakdown, which asylum might they be sent to? The most local one, out to Colney Hatch, or further beyond still?

Many thanks,

London and Middlesex / Re: Ambrose P. Pomeroy - Zeppelin
« on: Wednesday 06 August 14 23:03 BST (UK)  »

Unfortunately no-one in the family has any more information :( His death caused my great-great aunt (born 1892) to have a serious breakdown, so the subject was little spoken of. She lived in Homerton and was a court dressmaker, and it was assumed that her Pomeroy was a fellow Londoner because it was always said that he "died at home". We don't even know if he was serving or not.

Of the two candidates I had that seemed likely, the first turned out to have gotten married in 1914. Ambrose was the other, but there don't appear to have been any fatal zeppelin attacks in London around the time he died. Although he could well have been injured earlier as you pointed out jorose, though if that's the case, it must have been something of a lingering death.

I must have read a mistranscription! Thanks you for pointing this out, he can't be the Pomeroy I'm after.

London and Middlesex / Ambrose P. Pomeroy - Zeppelin
« on: Monday 04 August 14 23:26 BST (UK)  »

Hello,

Have any of you local historians out there ever come across mention of an Ambrose P. Pomeroy as a victim of the September 13th 1916 Zeppelin attack on London? He died at Guy's Hospital on the 15th September (according to his probate) and I am wondering if there is a connection.

I have been searching for a Pomeroy - first name lost - who was a fiance of a great-great-aunt of mine. He died, according to family lore, as the result of "a bomb dropped from a flying craft. It was behind where they lived." Ambrose P. does not quite fit the latter, but given his dates, he seems to me to be a fitting candidate for the bomb story.

Many thanks,

Worcestershire / Worcestershire Huguenots
« on: Wednesday 24 July 13 19:52 BST (UK)  »

Evening all,

I have found a few scattered references to Huguenots in Worcestershire, connected to the weaving industry, but nothing definite. Does anyone have any idea whereabouts they settled - in Worcester, or did they move further afield? When did they move into the county? Are there any Huguenot surnames connected to Worcestershire?

Many thanks,

Essex / Mid 19th Century Essex Epidemics
« on: Friday 25 May 12 20:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

While compiling information on my Shorten ancestors, who lived around the three Belchamp villages, I couldn't help but notice that there seemed to be a high number of deaths, particularly children, in the decades 1840 through to 1880 (and worst in the 1850s/early 1860s). My 2x great-grandfather, for example, was one of eight, of whom six died before they were twenty years old.

Of course, it could just simply be very bad luck, but I'm curious to know what, if any, epidemics were going about (north) Essex during the mid 19th Century, if anyone knows.

Many thanks :)

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Painter/Chivers Marriage Warminster
« on: Thursday 24 May 12 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Would anyone who has copies of the records be able to look up a marriage for Henry Painter to a Martha Chivers in Saint Denys Church, Warminster, in 1834? FamilySearch provides no date, and I am particularly interested in Henry's condition and his and Martha's ages/place of origin, if given at all.

Immense thanks  :)

Now that one I haven't seen before! Given the geography and date of marriage/birth for Mary, that is almost certainly my Daniel and Mary (though I've never seen him give that occupation).

Cheers immensely West and trish1120 ;D That finally solves a mystery. Thank you  :)

Hi West,

Dang :( Not sure where else they could have gotten to then. Daniel Maslen was from All Cannings, but there is no marriage or him there either, nor in Bishop's Cannings, so unless he and Mary simply did not marry...

He was a labourer, farmer and butcher throughout his life, always in All Cannings (or that area) as far as I know. His daughter did go to London, probably to stay with paternal relatives, and married there, so unless this link goes back another generation, I have no idea where else in Wiltshire he and Mary may have married.

Many thanks though, much appreciated  :)
