Lincolnshire / Re: My Lincolnshire Surname Interests

Hi Brenda,

My Rippingale Elsom line from William bap 1667. He and his wife had two sons, Robert (1706) and John (1716 - 1720)
Robert and his wife had 8 children - Robert (1729), Anne (1731), Sarah (1732), Eleanor (1735), John (1738), Mary (1741-1742), William 1743-1745), Hannah (1745), Abigail (1746)

All children baptised in Rippingale and all common names I'm afraid so I'm not sure if that's any help.

Regards,

The surname joined my tree when Sarah Elsom, bap 1792 Moulton, married George Paling in 1814.
It is quite possible we belong to 2 seperate branches of the same tree but I have no evidence. I have noted Elsoms in Rippingale in the 18thC & wondered whether there was a connection there with my line but have found nothing concrete yet.

Hi Brenda,
it seems we have two different Elsom families. I have traced my Elsom line back to John Elsom bap. 1638 in Rippingale. I do have two Sarah's in my tree, both baptised in Rippingale but neither matching the date of your Sarah .

Good luck with your research

Hi Brenda,
I have the Elsom family from Rippingale in my tree. My gt.gt. grandmother was Susan Elsom, b.1856, she was the youngest child of Michael Elsom and Dinah Portess. Does this connect with your Elsom family?

Thanks so much for checking the index cards Ady, as I don't know when he enlisted it's a bit difficult to take a guess at which one of those might be him. He was born in Sep 1899 so possible the 1916 one, but still he would surely have had to fib about his age on enlistment? Mind you, I don't think that was unusual!

Jebber, thanks for the link. I'll definitely take a good look on the site and contact them, hopefully they will be able to help me track down his regiment number.

Morning Ady,
Thanks so much for taking the time to look for the medal card. As far as I remember, Grandfather seemed to discount the Henry part of his name, he always used R.G. as his initials. I didn't know about the Henry bit until I bought a copy of his birth certificate! This morning I checked the National Archive site but the most likely results seem to be the two Robert G Howards on Ancestry. As my sub has run out and winter fuel bills are taking priority over renewing it, I can't see much info other than name and regiment. But for now I am so happy to at least have found out which regiment he served in, so thanks again for that.

Yes, it's a great photo isn't it? The original is quite large but very fragile. One of the corners was badly creased but my clever daughter managed to work some computer magic on it and it looks wonderful now. Sadly, it is the only one I have of my Grandfather in uniform.

Thanks again for all your  help

Wow, that was quick! I went offline to cook dinner and the answers were waiting for me when I got back. Thankyou everyone for the speedy regiment identification, I'm so grateful.

I know that my next step is to discover his service/regiment number but I'm a bit in the dark on how to go about this. I assume I need that number to see if his war service records have survived? Any info on where to look would be most appreciated.

Ady, thanks for your help. You asked whether my Grandfather was a casualty? In the right hand column of that image it says Died - does this mean killed in action? If so then this is not the right man as my Grandfather survived the war. Could you please tell me where you found the record anyway so that I can look for other possible Robert Howards?

Many thanks

World War One / Help to identify regiment please
« on: Monday 13 October 08 16:58 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone help me identify my Grandfather's regiment? Hopefully I have attached a photo (and also a close up of his cap badge in case that helps) There is a date in pencil on the back of the photo, 1915/16. I am not sure how accurate that is though.

His name was Robert Henry Glen Howard, born 1899 in Bakewell, Derbyshire. Fingers crossed that some kind person can help with identifying his regiment and pointing me in the right direction to finding  his WWI service record and any medals gained.

Many thanks

Hi Bee,

I've emailed the Lincolnshire Archives but not yet had a reply. I hadn't thought of the local paper/library, that gives me another avenue to try, thanks very much!

Lincolnshire / Inquest details?
« on: Thursday 29 September 05 19:58 BST (UK)  »
I have today received the death certificate for my 3x gt.grandfarher, Robert Elsom of Rippingale. The cause of death is given as 'died suddenly of disease of the heart and congestion of the lungs'. The certificate also says that a certificate was received from the Coroner for Lincolnshire. The date of the inquest was 11th October 1878, just one day after Michael's death.

I have two questions and would be grateful for any help please,

Was it usual to have an inquest on the day following a person's death?

Also, is it possible for me to find a record of the inquest or of the Coroner's report? I have no idea where to start looking!

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction,
Chris
