World War One / Re: Identify cap badge please
« on: Wednesday 25 March 20 00:41 GMT (UK)  »
Lots of replies. Thank you very much. He had no middle name. He was born in 1877. I have a vague recollection of someone in the family years ago saying he may have served in Ireland. As far as I know he only signed on for the duration and the family has No previous ties to the military at all.

World War One / Identify cap badge please
« on: Friday 20 March 20 15:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I hope somebody will be able to help me with this.Unfortunately the cap badge goes out of focus when it is enlarged.
This is my grandfather Samuel Iles of St George Bristol. I'm guessing the date of the photo is 1917 from the date of birth of his son, born that year, who is shown as a baby on his mother's lap in the full photo. In this way I hope to access any Great War records (if they still exist). I can find no details of him on the military records info on Ancestry or FindMyPast, There were a lot of soldiers with the same name born in this part of Bristol.
Thanks a lot.

Hi Mike
Sorry for late reply, I've been on holiday with no WiFi.
Unfortunately I haven't any more information.  I surmised from the replies I received that there was little historical documentation kept concerning these hospitals. However, I've not looked for anything in Belgium. Great to hear that your gt grandfather was at the same hospital as mine.
Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck with your family history.
Regards. Geniespot.

The Common Room / Re: Class Grading System In Schools 1930s

Thanks Stan for those speedy replies. Helps a bit but definately says Standard V11 so off the scale. Did they do a later exam perhaps, just before they left school?

The Common Room / Class Grading System In Schools 1930s
« on: Monday 01 May 17 14:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Can anyone advise me what 'Standard 7' (written 'Standard V11') meant? I presume it is a school class designation/grade. It was written on a relative's school book under their name.
This was in the 1930s, sometime before 2nd World War.

Thank you

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / London Catholic Friendly Benefit Society
« on: Monday 01 May 17 14:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Has anyone any idea if there is a list of Catholic Friendly Benefit Societies anywhere? Perhaps there was only one?
I'm trying to discover where a family member worked in the 1930s. It was incorporated into the NHS in 1948, I was told all the employees became Civil Servants then.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Sarah
The three family photos belong to me so I assumed I had copyright. Is this not so?
Thanks for any advice.

Hi
After looking at the really useful edinphoto site (thanks for suggesting this site sonofthom), I am confused as to the dates of these three photos.

The first of two young men was by Begbie of Leith St. He was there 1874-81. Can anyone narrow this down a bit?

Second photo of head and shoulders of one gent is by Bashford at Royton Cottage Portobello. It seems he was only at this address in 1878. Is the fashion right for that early date?

The third picture is a 'Lest we forget' card By O Davis, 16 Princes St. Apparently he was in Edinburgh 1881-1928. So is it likely that this chap was killed in the Great War?

Thanks for any help received.
