« on: Tuesday 15 July 08 13:05 BST (UK)  »
Some great people in the common room have helped identify my gg & my ggg grandfathers who were in Glasgow.

So can anyone help me with finding any references for birth / marriage and death certificates so that I can send off for them? and also where would Joseph have worked as a Chain maker and William as a nail maker?

1901 at 350 Petershill Road,Glasgow.

William Aston head 30 nail maker b England
Florence Aston wife 26 b England
Thomas W Aston son 7 scholar b Glasgow Lanarkshire

There is a marriage in 1893 of a William Aston to a Florence, and the birth of a Thomas W Aston in 1894.

Are there any deaths of Florence or Thomas as William was a widower at his second marriage which led to my Grandfather

1891 At 2 Germiston Place,Glasgow.

Joseph ASTON 74 head ,chain maker b England
Mary wife 42   shop woman,provision b England
William son 24 nail maker b England
John son 23    ditto ....ditto
Obadiah son 15  apprentice nail maker b Coatbridge Lanarkshire
Polly dau 9 scholar B Coatbridge
Sarah dau 4 scholar b Glasgow Lanarkshire

1881 at Brands Ld,Old Monkland (that's what the transcript says) The family has been mistranscribed as ASHTON.

Joseph 42 head chain maker b England
Mary wife 34 chain makers wife b England
John son 14 scholar b Eng
William son (it says 6 but I think it should be 16) app bricklayer b Eng
Obediah son 5 scholar b Coatbridge

all help most appreciated

Carol I can't belive it!!!! I am soooooo excited - you have made my Day (although not my husbands as I don't want ot do any chores or jobs now I just want to keep doing this!!)  I first posted for help on this 3 years ago. My Grandfather was a Barnardoes boy so it took me ages to find his parents - William & Edith and I was coming to the conclusion I would never get any further ........ and now look!!! :D

I don't kow what I would have done without you Carol, Pam and Ambers

So now I can speak properley - what does a chain maker do? and I wonder what took them to Scotland.....

Hi

I have no information for Williams first Marriage. The witnesses to his second to Edith Barratt were Charles Joseph Watkins and Margaret Ann Watkins

There is no way of seeing who a witness is on a death certifcate without getting the certifcate is there? as that is the only way I think I will find his first marriage

Thanks again

Louise

Pam / Ambers - Thanks for your help

Ambers I just found that exact census return last night, and think like you the occupations are similar - but how can I know I've found the right one?

So Pam if you have their previous info from 1851 & 1841 that would be most appreciated.

If this is right how could I use this information to find William's first marriage? - as then I'm thinking I could use his first wifes death to link it more readily to what i know

Patrish,

I couldn't find my original post yesterday, so thought that maybe I hadn't managed to post it - hence I did it again. I then found it and at that time it had no responses. I am most grateful for any help and will be replying to those that do.

Thanks Louise

The Common Room / William Aston - Help???
« on: Sunday 13 July 08 21:30 BST (UK)  »
I am so stuck it is untrue - and was hoping that someone could help me or  point me in the right direction.

These are the facts as I know (in reverse):

Wiliiam Aston died 24th Oct 1920 aged 46yrs, occupation a Nail Cutter (journeyman) (???)  at 16 Mason St Stalybridge (all from his death cert)

He married Edith Barratt on July 7th 1917 in Christ Church, Dukinfield, aged 40yrs (somehow he aged 6yrs in a 3yr period!). He was a Widower and a Bobbin Carrier who live at 55 Castle St. His father was Joseph Aston (deceased) who was a chain smith. (all from his marriage cert)

Thats all I know and don't know how to find either his first marriage, or his birth certificate, or any further info on his parents - Please help!

There are rumours that he was a master freemason and that he walked from Scotland.

Here's crossing all my fingers for some enlightenment!!! :(

Can anyone suggest some help or what to do next about finding my G-Grandfather - William Aston - birth certifcate / place / Date.

Going backward this is what I know:

Death : 24th Oct 1920, 16 Mason St, Stalybridge aged 46, occupation: Nail Cutter (journeyman)

Married : July 7th 1917 to Edith Barratt aged 40 (somehow aged 6yrs in the 3yrs between marriage and death!) in Christ Church, Dukinfield. Was a widower, occupation Bobbin Carrier, and lived 55 Castle St.
Father : Joseph Aston (deceased) who was a chain smith

They are the facts.

Rumours he was Master Freemason and that he walked from Scotland.

The only thing left I can think of are the electoral rolls - but how and where do you get access to them for 1917? or any local newspaper notices for marriage or death but don't know where to start with that either

Any other help ideas etc would be most gratefully received!

Thanks
