It may be Dovecot Avril but I just wondered if there was any evidence that it was once called Ducathall.  Evelyn

Thanks again but, unfortunately, it doesn't make sense  ???  I have lived in the Newlands area most of my life but have never heard of Ducathall but it is very clear on birth certificates for the Bruce family that they were born there.  There is a farm in the area called Dovecot Farm, known "The Docot", and I wondered if there was a link there.  Puzzled.

Thanks - I had a look at that but the one I am looking for is definitely in the Parish of Newlands.

I am trying to find out where Ducathall was in Newlands Parish.  It is mentioned a number of times on birth certificates in the 1770s but I have no idea where it is. Thanks

The triangular badge could be a War Service Badge issued to munitions workers.  See http://www.barnesfamilyhistory.org.uk/firstworldwar/on_war_service_badges.htm

Hi

Have you tried searching for Godskirk or Gothskirt?  There seems to be a few variations of the surname Gothskirk in West Linton around that time.

Hi Phillippa

I have a list of all the pre-1855 headstones in the old Newlands Churchyard.  There are two headstones with the name Aitken:

1.  Wm Nimmo Aitken d 8.4.1844  9

2. James Aitken of Callands 30.5.1835  87, w Margt Murray 1.8.1839  91, s James A of Callands 16.6.1839  63 (w Agnes Nimmo 12.11.1851  72, da Margt Murray 22.6.1844  25)

There is also a reference to the History of Peeblesshire Vol 3 p88 in my records.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks folks - I realise that the scan itself is not too great but I do appreciate the help.

I am amazed at the work you do here and wondered if you could do anything with this photograph of my mother-in-laws family which I have just had emailed to me.

Thanks

Evelyn
