South Africa / Walter Smith Durban
« on: Tuesday 23 June 20 20:22 BST (UK)  »
Trying to trace a couple who emigrated from Buckie, Scotland to Durban, South Africa. Their names are Walter McGeorge Smith (born 25 November 1894) and Williamina Thomson (born 6 October 1896). They had a daughter Mary (1919-1970) and son born in 1922, both in Scotland. A newspaper excerpt dated 1931 tells me they were in South Africa by then, so it's possible they had more children.

Ideally I'm trying to find when the couple died and if they had any more family.

I'm still relatively new to navigating South African records but I have checked the Deceased Estate Files all to no avail. I did find a baptism record for their son's daughter dated 1947, and it disclosed the name of his wife. There's also a Passenger List recording their daughter Mary who returned to Scotland from Durban in 1955. Unfortunately I don't know if they are still living or not. I haven't been able to find any more records through Ancestry.

Any help would be vastly appreciated.

Best,

Greg

Banffshire / Murrays of Buckie

Hi,

Hoping someone can give me a bit of a hand here as I've hit a brick wall with this family.

I have a couple, John Cowie Murray and Jessie Ann Cowie, who married in 1910 and had the following children:

Janet Coull Murray (b.1912)
Margaret Murray (b.1914)
Jessie Ann Murray (b.1916 d.1979)
John Murray (b.1919)
Easter Murray (b.1924 d.1951)

It seems that the parents separated (but did not divorce), and John emigrated to Vancouver where he passed away in 1962. Jessie Ann died in 1968 at Edinburgh. I've successfully found two children (Jessie Ann and Easter), but I'm at a complete loss with the others. I think it's quite possible the other three children emigrated, but with a name like Murray it's quite difficult to say.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Greg

Hi,

Many thanks for your help so far, it has been very helpful and I very much appreciate it.

As for the websites regarding Buckie, I'm aware of all of them and use them regularly. The Buckie Heritage website is quite useful and I have been to the centre in Buckie itself.

As a matter of fact I already have that James Reid in my tree. He is related to the Reaich side but not directly. As for obituaries in Scotland, I use the Press and Journal so I've actually found that obituary before.

I'm currently looking through findmypast and all of the relevant websites pertaining to the different countries.

Thanks,

Greg

That's certainly a plausible explanation as to why I couldn't find them. I'm not willing to rule out that they might have emigrated as of yet, there just may be a chance that they emigrated to a place other than Canada. It would make sense if they did in fact settle in Canada given their family living there already, but I'm willing to keep my options open with this one.

As a matter of fact I have a Jane Murray Reid in my tree (born in 1912). All of the surnames in Rathven (which is the registration district for Buckie) are very common so it's no surprise when you come across people with the same name.

Hi Sandra,

I think that's where the confusion came in - I think that's the wrong family. As someone previously mentioned Maggie may have remained in Scotland. I mistakenly assumed that she had gone out to Canada with her husband given that she had been out there previously. I still haven't found their deaths in Scotland but I will keep trying and see what I can find!

As I have access to Scottish records and the Registry House I have been able to find everyone that remained in Scotland. The only thing I have difficulty with is finding the ones who went to Canada.

I guess they didn't then! I had trouble finding Maggie and William's deaths anywhere in Scotland so I assumed that she had gone back out there. I'm assuming she was out visiting her brother and sister in 1911.

I have been able to find the details of Isabella Reaich's children. Jean Murray Cormack Smith married John Sanderson from England - he went back to England after their death. I have their marriage in 1939. She has a brother, W J C Smith (b.1914) who married in Vancouver in 1941 and later applied for a divorce in 1958 - this was listed when he applied for a marriage license in Washington, 1958.

I did recently come across the marriage certificate for Isabella to Thomas John O'Hagan. I'm currently looking to see if I can find any children for them as they married in 1923 and were both of child-bearing age.

James Reaich and Helen Donald had three sons - John Donald Reaich (d.1994), William James Reaich (d.1916) and Alexander Donald Reaich (d.1943). Currently looking to see if I can seek out any more but so far I've had no success.

Many thanks to everyone for your help so far,

Greg

They did live at Hall Street in Buckie, that was the family house. It would appear that James, Maggie and Isabella all left for Canada, while the other siblings remained in Scotland.
