Pembrokeshire / Baptisms and Burials for the Parish of Haroldston West
« on: Saturday 17 February 24 01:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

I am coming across register entries for relatives which simply state "Burials in the Parish of Haverfordwest" or "Baptisms in the Parish of Haverfordwest"

Addresses given in those registers as being resident in places such as Haroldston Glebe, Haroldston Tongues Farm and South Nolton.

I've been trying to identify which Church these actually refer to but not getting anywhere fast so would appreciate any suggestions.

I added burials into FindAGrave as St Madoc of Ferns but there's no trace of any of my relatives' burials in the churchyard there so wondering if I have the Church wrong and the registers mean Haroldston St Issells ?

Cheers

Hi All

I'd be grateful when anyone was next visiting the Pems Record Office in Haverfordwest and they might be able to check up for any records for me please?

In the 1851 Census, my 2xGt-Grandfather Lemuel Williams (sometimes transcribed as Samuel Williams) is enumerated with a Thomas and Mary Evans living in the City Road, Haverfordwest St Martin, noted as a 1yo foundling, along with anther foundling named Mary Harries.

Looking at the 1861 census, I can see that Thomas and Mary Evans were again enumerated in City Road, Haverfordwest St Martin, and were caring for two more foundlings so it would appear that Board of Guardians regularly paid them to look after young children in the care of the Workhouse.

On checking with PRO, I am advised that the only surviving records for Haverfordwest Union Workhouse covering the period from 1850 to 1864 (when Lemuel would have been 14, the age at which he was most likely to have been apprenticed) are the minutes of the Board of Guardians.

Those minutes mostly covered the administration of the Workhouse and the collection of the poor rate but they do contain some references to inmates of the institution.

There are four volumes of the minutes covering the period 1850-1864 but I'm told they can be searched quite rapidly as the format is fairly regular.

I am hoping that SKS may have the time and opportunity to look through those minutes and see if there are any details pertaining to Lemuel at all?

He was born Mar 1850, baptised 10 March 1850 and abandoned by his mother Martha Williams, on 14 March 1850 so I'm particularly interested to learn about any details of him being found and handed over to the foster carer Evans family, how long he stayed with them or similar, before being placed into the Work House.

Lemuel is still listed as an inmate at the Workhouse on the 1861 census (12yo) and by 1871, he has been apprenticed to James Thompson, his wife Martha and their two children, as a tailor, aged 20 so again, particularly interested in any information regarding him being apprenticed to James etc.

It appears that his mother, Martha Williams, was sent to Haverfordwest Castle Goal for 2 months hard labour May-Jul 1850 but her whereabouts after that date are unknown.

Very grateful for any assistance.

Kind Regards

Hi there

I have been sent copies of some unlabelled family photos however, the information is sparse and I am told there's no writing on the backs of any of the photos.

A couple of the attached are from the David Bowen, Caer Alun Studio, Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire whilst the other are from Williams & Williams who had studios in a few locations - the most likely one for the other two attached, would be Pontypridd in the Rhondda, or perhaps Swansea.

I'd be grateful for any info that can be gleaned from them as it may enable me to identify who they are  :-*

Thanks in advance.

Hi there

I'm hoping that once this photo has been restored, I might be able to use facial recognition to see which side of the family they may belong to. They are likely to be husband and wife who lived in the Swansea area, Wales.

If anyone could hazard a guess for the period that would be awesome. :-)

Many thanks

Glamorganshire / Help with street name - 1871 Census, Llangyfelach
« on: Saturday 21 July 18 17:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

could anyone identify what this street name is please?

It's from the 1871 Census for Llangyfelach and although I checked the lead page I still wasn't able to identify what street this could be - I'm not at all familiar with the area.

Hello!

This is a copy of the only photo of my Grandfather George - the original is long gone.

I'm hoping someone may be able to give some guidance around a possible period the photo may have been taken.

George worked on the Docks most of his adult life so it would appear he's dressed up and that this could possibly be a wedding photo - To me, it appears there was a woman standing alongside which someone tore off, leaving only George.

Love to hear any suggestions...

World War One / WW1 injuries - Which Hospitals ?
« on: Sunday 15 July 18 05:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

My great uncle, William John Beard, was injured while at the Front and was sent to hospital for treatment.

I "think" the first hospital mentioned is the Royal Herbert at Woolwich but am totally stumped on the 2nd one so wondering if anyone is able to advise what it might be?

Also happy to stand corrected if I've mis-interpreted the first one :-)

I thought I'd ask here before heading over to the handwriting forum as it is of a military nature and thought it likely that someone on this board might know the answer.

Thanks
Lynda
