Armed Forces / E J Wells - 4th/3rd Bedfordshire/RAF mechanic WW1 Military mystery
« on: Friday 12 February 21 12:51 GMT (UK)  »
A military mystery with my ancestor Ernest James Wells, born 1881, Bushey, Hertfordshire, son of Sarah Wells. He was a labourer/gardener by profession. (I have records/censuses/first marriage/divorce 1881 - 1911)

In 23 December 1898 he joined the militia (according to  his attestation) - 4th Bedfordshire regiment. Service No: 3913. He undertook training over the years to 1908.
Entries  include -
"Embodied 16 January 1900
Dismissed home unfit - 22 February 1900
Posted to 3rd Beds 18 June 1900"

I also have seen his attestation for the Army/Special Reserve in 1908.

He joined up in the First World War, (according to his transfer from the army to the RFC/RAF), on 17 Aug 1914, then  transferring to the RFC/RAF  4 August  1917/1 April 1918, service number 88397, as a labourer/ mechanic. Home address/next of kin - Mrs Ada Wells, Titania (Titian) Avenue, Bushey. There is no information about where he was serving in the army before his transfer.

I can find nothing for the time between.

There is however,  a marriage certificate for Ernest James Wells (aged 45) and Ada May Bunce at Chatham  in 1916 where the profession is given as "Lance Corporal, 5th Middlesex Regiment", residing at Lower Barracks , Chatham". If this is the same man, this is were the mystery lies.

He wasn't always truthful about is age etc (gave his year of birth as anything from 1871 to 1881) and by 1950, he sometimes used the Christian name Thomas. A newspaper report of his remarriage to is first wife in 1950,  said "he was in the Boer War" and "in the army for many years". But I take that with the proverbial pinch of salt!

I would like to try and fill in the missing years, if anyone can help or advise.

Thanks in advance.

The Common Room / Is Julia Selby really Julia Fogarty
« on: Friday 11 December 20 18:53 GMT (UK)  »
My "brickwall" is a recent one - is Julia Selby the same person as Julia Fogarty?

In 1861, my ancestor (William H Quarry), a soldier in the 6th Inniskillings Dragoons married a widow - Julia Dale (fathers name given as James Selby) in Ahmednuggur, India. After William Quarrys death in China in 1874, Julia Quarry (and her daughter Julia, from her first marriage) returned to the UK. On the daughters marriage certificate, she gives her fathers name  as William Dale, a soldier.

I have traced a William Dale, a soldier in the same regiment as W H Quarry, who died earlier in 1861 in India. He is also recorded on the medal rolls for the Crimea.

However I can find no marriage for Julia Selby to William Dale.  However there are banns recorded for Julia Fogarty and William Dale  January 1852 at Hammersmith. Also a marriage - 13 April 1857 in Lambeth, where Williams occupation is given as a carpenter. Julia gives her father as James Fogarty (deceased) a watchmaker.

There is a baptism for William Dale at the chapel of Marylebone workhouse (father William, a painter)  and 2 baptisms in 1860 at Maidstone of Julia Emma and William Walter, giving William Dale       occupation as soldier.

The gap between banns and marriage could possibly be due to Williams Dale's army service.
Is Selby a red herring?

Any opinions and suggestions to prove the 2 Julias are the same person would be appreciated,

Thanks in advance.

Occupation Interests / Scientific instrument case maker
« on: Saturday 22 August 20 13:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi
My grandfather James William Sutton 1867-1951 was variously described as:
French polisher
Masterman cabinet maker
Scientific instrument casemaker.

Lived in Clerkenwell  till the 1930s when he moved to Edgware, Middlesex.

Said to be in business with his brother, Joseph Robert Sutton, as Sutton Brothers.

My query is...would he have served an apprenticeship? I have been unable to find any guild records etc. so far.
Any suggestions for avenues of research would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hertfordshire / Oak Lodge, Aldenham or Stanmore
« on: Thursday 13 August 20 17:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have a photocopy of a letter (Bucks Records Office) to my 4x Great grandfather Pythagoras Quarry. It has been sent to him from Bethlem Hospital regarding his daughter Elizabeth, discharging her as "uncured". This is in 1829.

It has been sent to him c/o Mr I  or J Eales (?), Oak Lodge, Stanmore.

I cannot find anything about an Oak Lodge in Stanmore, although there is an Oak Lodge on the 1841 Census, in the Caldicot Hill area of Aldenham ( where some of my Quarry ancestors lived at the time). Was Stanmore  the local "postal" town? Or had the hospital got it incorrect?

If this is the correct one, where would I find out where exactly Oak Lodge was? I know there were  several "gentry" houses in the area and a number of "lodges"

Thanks in advance.

(This is to fill in Pythagoras's missing years between 1811 -  baptism of youngest son George -  and  aged 60 , as Male Servant to Charlotte Chauvel, on 1841 census at Caldicot Hill.)

Hi

My ancestor Herbert Henry STONE was a pre-war Regular soldier in the South Wales Borderers (No: 7222). It is believed he was on Reserve when the First World War broke out., and was with the 1st Battalion SWB, entering a Theatre of War on 26 January 1915.

Later, he was a CSM with the 12th Bn SWB at Bourlon Wood in November 1917 and awarded the MC

But, according the Medal Roll, it says that between these two events ,  he was with the 1/Garrison Battalion RWF and the 14 Battalion RWF - army number 33629.

Any guidance on how to "fill the gap" of  his time with the RWF , would be appreciated. There are no Army service records for him apart from his attestation papers in 1902.

(I have a lot of information about the movements of the South Wales Borderers and especially his time with the 12th SWB from the History of the SWB in the First World War. )

Hertfordshire / School Lane, Bushey
« on: Sunday 08 March 15 20:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have 2 addresses in Bushey, that I am trying to pinpoint more thoroughly. I know where School Lane is, but the houses  I am trying to identify are:

6 Salem Cottages  (1918 - 1925)

68 Russell Place      (1911 census)

I expect that the names have changed over the years, but it would be good to identify them.

Many thanks in advance

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Frederick G Quarry of Ripley - Burial
« on: Thursday 05 March 15 19:18 GMT (UK)  »
My great great uncle Frederic George Quarry,  (who served in World War One) moved from Hertfordshire to Ripley after the War . He lived at 9 Providence Street, Ripley but later died on 27 December 1921.

I did a search to see if I could find where he was buried and came across  these websites about war memorials -
http://derbyshirewarmemorials.wikispaces.com/Ripley

and

 http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DBY/Ripley/war_memorial.txt

On the first  website it lists "F G Quarry" and on the  other it says "F C Quarry",

Now, Quarry is a rare name and I am wondering  Is there any further information that will help me prove/disprove if this is my ancestor? Also, where he could be buried?

Thanks in advance

Derbyshire / Cottages at Alderwasley (Hall)
« on: Friday 02 January 15 15:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

A long shot, but...

My grandfather was employed at Alderwasley Hall as a chauffeur, for a few months in 1919 (after his WW1 service). My grandparents lived for that time in a cottage (one of a pair) which I believe was on the estate. A photo is attached. Do they still exist? Is there any source where I can find out more? My grandmother loved living there, and recalled the wide window seats.

(George Henry Phiilips (1886-1961) and May Clara Phillips nee Wells (1897 - 1981)

Thanks in advance
