Essex / FAWARY road name in Custom House
« on: Tuesday 18 February 20 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
I’d be grateful if someone could help with this road name.  I have tried a variety of possible alternatives, including on websites relating to name changes and roads that no longer exist.  My eyes have gone square from scrutinising maps.  It is the address given for a burial, of Doris Rose Emma Double, at St Mary Magdalene, East Ham, on 31 March 1907.

Thank you.

London and Middlesex / White Hart, Northolt
« on: Sunday 14 August 16 16:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am aiding and abetting a friend who is researching someone who was brought up at the White Hart, Northolt, in the 1830s.  We have noticed from Google maps that the pub has recently been boarded up but that a planning application for redevelopment has been declined on technical issues.  If anyone uses the White Hart roundabout regularly, we would like to know what state it is in or, indeed, whether it has been demolished.  If any locals have some insight into the situation, the info would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Worthing Sports 1907
« on: Sunday 24 January 16 15:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder whether anyone has access to local papers which may have reported on the Worthing Sports of 1907.  I don't know whether these would have taken place on one day or over several.  I have found a reference to a 5 mile bike race on 21st August.  Specifically, I am interested in a mailcart competition.

Thank you.

Kent Lookup Requests / Inhabitants of Lessness Heights/House, Belvedere/Lessness/Erith
« on: Saturday 26 September 15 21:41 BST (UK)  »
A house called, firstly Lessness Heights and then Lessness House used to exist at the end of what is now Priory Close in Belvedere (formerly Lessness).  I have the names of the families living there in each of the censuses going back to 1871.  A couple of servants were there in 1861, so presumably the family were elsewhere on census night.  Few houses are identified by name in the 1851 census.

The house is named on a map of 1860, but it is unknown how long before that date it was built.  It was substantial, with a ball room.

It would be great if anyone can look up directories, tax records and suchlike that may indicate who lived there in 1860-ish and earlier.

Thank you.

Deborah

Kent Lookup Requests / Augustus J Carter Plumstead 1907
« on: Sunday 13 September 15 17:01 BST (UK)  »
A few weeks ago I found that, in 1907, Augustus James Carter was renting three rooms at 32 Wernbrook Street, Plumstead.  I'm blowed if I can find the record now.  I would be grateful if a mind Rootschatter could have a look.

Thank you.

Does anybody know whether birthplace information in C19th censuses has ever been collated?

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Marriage Windsor GEORGE HALL
« on: Saturday 25 October 14 12:56 BST (UK)  »
I would be grateful if someone could look up the marriage of George Hall to Harriett.  In 1841, their eldest child at home was 17.  George and Harriett were 44 and 40, respectively.  They lived and were both born in Windsor.  I assume that they married in Windsor between 1816 and 1824.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Cowtan 1851/1861 St Pancras?
« on: Monday 17 March 14 20:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for Katherine Fanny Cowtan, or her parents (Robert and Susannah/Susanna/Susan) in 1851 and 1861.  She was born in Newington in 1848 and baptised in St Pancras in 1852, along with her brother Frederick James.  Frederick was with his maternal grandparents (James and Elizabeth Roase) near Dorking in 1851 - but I have not been able to find Katherine or her parents in 1851 or in 1861.  Cowtan is easily mistranscribed and I think this may be the problem.

Katherine married William Thomas Vincent at St Nicholas, Plumstead in 1868 and she then lived in Plumstead for the rest of her life.  Her brother also married in Plumstead in 1874, but he and his wife lived in St Pancras and then Crouch End.

I have Katherine's parents at later dates in Mansfield Road, Hampstead.  Robert was born in St Pancras and seems to have remained in North London - apart from when Katherine and Frederick were born in Newington Butts.  Robert and Susannah married in Kennington in 1846.  He was a piano forte maker.  His father, William, was a cabinet maker who hailed from Canterbury as did most of the Cowtans I have come upon - some of them migrating to the Camberwell area and others to North London.  The Roses were from Dorking.

Thank you.
