Kent / John Williams of Sheerness
« on: Wednesday 28 December 22 09:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm having trouble tracing my gt grandfather John Williams' birth and therefore his parents.

He lived at 35 Victory Street, Sheerness from at least 1919 until at least 1939 (all of his children were born there).  He lived with Elizabeth Ewell (nee Brown) and their 7 children.  John and Elizabeth never married. At some point, before 1942, the family moved to 54a Russell Street.

1921 census indicates John was born c1881 in Sheerness.  1939 register states he was born 7 October 1878.  He worked for HM Dockyard as a Labourer/Wire Splicer.

John died at 54a Russell Street Sheerness on 30 Sep 1942, stated age 63 (which indicates a birth year of c1879).

The only other clue I have is that on one of his children's baptisms, he is named as William instead of John (but not on any other document).

I have looked at all the John Williams and William Williams born in Sheerness around these years, and have ruled them all out.

I have a few DNA matches which I believe to be linked to this side, but they have also drawn a blank.

I have spent years doing my family research, solved some pretty difficult mysteries, but have never been as stumped as this before.

Just looking for any fresh ideas really, as I don't know Kent all that well.

Many thanks for reading.

Essex / Norland House
« on: Thursday 08 February 18 17:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

The 1851 census shows my 3rd gt grandmother (Susan Brown nee Hallsey)'s birthplace as Norland House, Essex.

I can't find any mention of this place on the internet, I just wondered if anyone was familiar with the place name at all?  She married in 1843 in Orsett before moving to Kent.  I would like to find a birth for her.

Many thanks

Monique

Sussex / Thomas Whiting born Handcross
« on: Thursday 27 April 17 16:51 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to establish the parents of Thomas Whiting (sometimes spelled Whiteing).

The 1851,61 & 71 census's all indicate that he was born 1803/04 in Handcross.  The 1881 census shows him as being born in Brighton.

He may have been a non-conformist, I'm not sure.  I have been unable to find a baptism for him online and don't have much experience researching Sussex records.

Many thanks in advance for any help.  :)

Dublin / Mary Daley nee Douthitt
« on: Thursday 23 April 15 16:12 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information on my 3x Gt Grandmother.  This is what I know:-

Mary Dalley married John McDonald 14 August 1859 at All Saints Church, Paddington.  Mary was widowed, her father was John Douthitt, a Tailor and she lived at 5 Church Place.

In 1868 when her daughter Johanna McDonald was born, Mary's name was given as Mary MacDonald, late Daly, formerly Douthitt.

In 1871, Mary, her husband John McDonald and family lived at 12 Barrett's Court, Marylebone.  Her year of birth would be 1826 and place of birth is Dublin.

Mary's husband John McDonald had a daughter from his first marriage born in Limerick.  He was a Mason born in Marylebone.

I have been unable to trace Mary and John after 1871 census and would really like to find Mary's baptism record, or any other record of her prior to her marriage in 1859 if anyone is able to help at all.

Many thanks :-)

Sussex / George Millard
« on: Monday 30 March 15 15:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has access to Sussex baptism records.  I am interested in knowing the occupation of George Millard's father John Millard.  George was baptised 1 Jan 1815 in Wisborough Green, Sussex, mother is Jane.  (Ancestry doesn't have the actual image).

I am basically trying to see if he is connected to John Millard baptised in Bramley, Surrey in 1816 - son of John and Jane as I can find no other trace of the family in Bramley.  John's father John was a Canalman.

Many thanks in advance for any help :-)

Surrey / Bramley Baptism
« on: Thursday 19 March 15 12:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for the baptism of John Millard.  He spent his married life in Wiltshire, serving for 30 years as a Police Constable.  Census returns consistantly show that he was born around 1816 in Bramley, Guildford.  I have been unable to find his baptism on Ancestry or Find My Past so any help would be great.

Many thanks in advance

Berkshire / Prison in Berkshire
« on: Tuesday 11 November 14 21:01 GMT (UK)  »
I have to ancestors who at different times were both sentenced to one month in Prison.  The first was a 13 year old girl in 1847, she was sentenced to one months imprisonment in Reading Court.  The second was a widow and mother called in 1916, she was sentenced to one months imprisonment with hard labour in Newbury Court.

My question is, would they both have been sent to Reading Gaol, and if so do any records exist for these dates to anyone's knowledge? I have seen a site that has mugshots, but it doesn't cover these dates.

Berkshire Record's Office don't have information for 1847 but I haven't asked them about 1916 yet as I have only just discovered this story.

Many thanks

London and Middlesex / French Polishers in London
« on: Friday 05 September 14 09:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have one line in my family (name is Collins) where there were generations of French Polishers.

Are there any records specific to this occupation, or an association etc. I can't find anything.

Many thanks

M Amor
