Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What date is this?
« on: Friday 21 October 22 15:00 BST (UK)  »
The following shows a date in the header of a record of burials. At first glance it appears to be 1700 but those zeroes don't look anything like the zeroes in the burial records. Any ideas please?

Technical Help / Amazon Fire Tablet won't access the SD card
« on: Friday 16 October 20 14:11 BST (UK)  »
I've added a 15GB SD card to my Amazon Fire tablet but it will not use it. Checking Settings/Storage shows that it is there and that it should be used to store everything (Downloads, Installs, Photos etc). No matter what I do I can't get it to store anything on that card. When the main memory is nearly full it comes up with "Insufficient storage", even though there is 15GB waiting to be used on the empty SD card! Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Should we colour black and white photos?
« on: Wednesday 14 October 20 09:24 BST (UK)  »
I've taken advantage of the COVID restrictions to get round to something I've been meaning to do for years ........ sorting and scanning the many 100s of B+W photos that my family has accumulated over many years. I tried a few on colourising software and I've been really impressed at what it can do with the inbuilt artificial intelligence. However, I really am undecided as to whether this is a good thing to do as those B+W photos reflect a certain era and colourising them does, to my mind, lose their authenticity. I know it's a matter of personal choice but I'd like to hear what other people think.

The Common Room / Puzzling 1737 marriage document
« on: Friday 24 July 20 16:57 BST (UK)  »
During the course of my family history research I have often come across marriage licences. The latest one I have found for my 5G Grandparents is rather puzzling because before the marriage details it states what appears to be an obligation to pay £100 (to the vicar?) which I reckon is about £15,000 in today's money. That seems to be an extraordinary amount for a lowly weaver to have to pay, so perhaps I'm not reading it correctly. Can anyone please throw any light on what this document is about?

Technical Help / Link to PayPal gives blank screen
« on: Monday 30 March 20 15:34 BST (UK)  »
I have used PayPal for many years to make online payments so that I don't need to disclose my card details. Recently this has failed to work on every occasion and I have been left with no option but to enter card details. On selecting PayPal for payment it just presents me with a blank screen and this happens with both Firefox and Edge browsers. Having Googled the problem the most likely cause seemed to be the disabling of pop-ups but enabling pop-ups made no difference. I was convinced it had to be due to something on my PC but when I tried on my Amazon Fire tablet that too failed, but with a failure message and not a blank screen.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had this problem and any ideas as to what might be causing it.  Thank you.

The Common Room / Baptism surname not the parents surname
« on: Thursday 26 March 20 14:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have found the baptism record of my GGGrandfather Patrick Mullin in County Mayo, Ireland in 1827 and it gives his parents names as John and Bridget Roope. Why wouldn't he have his parents surname?

Occupation Interests / 1881 Surgeon - veterinary surgeon?
« on: Wednesday 11 September 19 15:38 BST (UK)  »
I have just found the probate record for my 3G Grandfather who died in 1881. He was a farmer so it was no surprise to see that one of his executors was a cattle dealer. However, the other executor is given as a surgeon which I wouldn't have expected. Do you think they possibly meant a veterinary surgeon, which would make more sense?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Deciphering 1664 baptism record
« on: Wednesday 19 December 18 17:15 GMT (UK)  »
Below is the 1664 baptism record for my 6th Great Grandfather James Marland. I'm having difficulty interpreting the 3 parts that I have highlighted. The first appears to say "fit" and that is in the same place for every baptism record in this document. Perhaps it's Latin which means something like "child of" or "born to". The second item is obviously the father's name but it's not like any name I've come across. I've no idea at all about the final item following the town name Ashton. If it's any help the full town name is probably Ashton-under-Lyne.

All suggestions gratefully received!

Technical Help / How can I do a screen-snip of a screen with a drop-down list?
« on: Sunday 26 March 17 16:59 BST (UK)  »
Most reference books contain screen-snips of screens with drop-down lists. How do they do that? Whenever I bring up a drop-down list and click on the Windows Snipping Tool, the list disappears! Try clicking on the File menu in your browser and then the Snipping Tool and you'll see what I mean. I need to do this sort of thing for a user guide I am writing so does anyone know a way around the problem?
