The Common Room / FindMyPast birthday treat?
« on: Thursday 06 August 20 18:25 BST (UK)  »

Hi,

I was just looking at my FindMyPast account and noticed that in Communication preferences it has a question,

"Would you like a birthday treat?

Let us know your birthday and we’ll send you a special surprise! "

Does anyone know what this is? Has anyone received one?

Regards,
Daisy

Photograph Resources, Tips, Tutorials / Removing smells from photographs.
« on: Wednesday 17 July 19 19:27 BST (UK)  »

Hi,

Please can anyone tell me how to get rid of stale tobacco and "old" smells from photographs, negatives and paperwork.

I've seen hints that say use baking soda, I use this for other cleaning and odour removal but I am scared that it might harm pictures etc. (especially precious negatives)

Has anyone tried it?

Regards,
Daisy

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is already here but just in case it's not :)

A good site I've just found,

I hope this will help people find those lost addresses.

Census and Resource Discussion / Has anyone used this site? Familylink
« on: Friday 11 November 11 13:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Has anyone used this site before and if so is it any good?

http://www.familylink.com/

I received an email from them, which I found in my spam box, I guess I'm on some sort of list ::)

I'm a bit wary of giving out my credit card details to get a free 3 day trial in case I (or they) forget to cancel the subscription.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Bradford 1901 census, pieces missing
« on: Tuesday 11 August 09 11:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

While I was helping a RootsChatter look for someone living in Bradford in 1901, I found them easily at findmypast but they couldn't be found using Ancestry even with the correct reference number ???

It seems that Ancestry are missing a whole chunk of Bradford, sub-registration district Bowling, the enumeration districts are 1-9 and 19-42, 18-41 just aren't there,

http://www.rootschat.com/links/06vw/

Of course the family I was looking for were living in district 18 ::) ;D

So if you can't find your person in Bradford in 1901 they might be hiding at findmypast ;)

The Lighter Side / Gone Doolally
« on: Wednesday 22 August 07 14:26 BST (UK)  »

For the next time you think, or if someone tells you, you've 'Gone Doolally', as I do now and then  ;D

In the late 19th century, the British Army established a military base at Deolali, 100 miles north of Bombay, India. The base had an asylum where unstable battle-weary troops would be sent, but it also doubled as a transit camp where soldiers at the end of there tour would be stationed to await the boat home. The ships only lefy for Blighty between November and March so soldiers sometimes had months to wait for their transportation. The ensuing drawn-out weeks of heat, exhaustion and boredom often resulted strange and eccentric behaviour. This behaviour would be explained on their return to Britain as 'he's gone through Deolali'.

Census and Resource Discussion / Problem with 1851 census on Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 26 April 06 18:44 BST (UK)  »
Using Ancestry.com I've just tried to look up someone in the 1851 census who was born in Dorset but lived in Hampshire at that time.

When I put England and Dorset into the main 'Search Records' boxes and then go to the 1851 census he does not show up, in fact no-one with that name shows up as living anywhere but Dorset, but if I then put Dorset into the birthplace County box, up he pops with a few others who were born in Dorset but living out of County.  ???

I've tried a couple of other names and Counties and always from the main search box, the 1851 census only then shows people living in the County, not if their born there and living somewhere else, but again then show them if the County is then added ???

I've never noticed this problem before and the it doesn't seem to apply to any other census. Please can someone tell me if it's always been like this or is this a new problem?
