Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Slightly OT - Video clean up?
« on: Friday 06 August 10 14:59 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone tried to clean up video?

I have some Super 8 Cine footage from the mid 70's. Its been transferred to VHS. The original Cine footage was rather scratched, and hence the transfer is scratched aswell.

I have now copied from the VHS to .avi files ready for editing, trimming and creating a dvd from, but Im wondering if there is any way to clean up the footage before hand? I had considered trying to clean each frame in photo editing, but with the length of the footage it would take a couple of years.

Has anyone tried anything like this before? Is there any software that can be suggested for a task like this?

Cheers in advance.

Sussex / Macdonald/Grinyer/Johnson = Mystery
« on: Friday 02 April 10 17:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi all. Was wondering if someone could take a look at a bit of a problem Im having.

My grandfather Andrew Macdonald was born in Brighton 23/02/1920 to Andrew Macdonald and Elizabeth Macdonald, late Johnson, formerly Grinyer.

Its, predictably, Elizabeth thats causing me some problems. My understanding of 'late' would mean that she was married to a Johnson, but was then widowed. And Im thinking the 'formerly Grinyer' would be her maiden name.

Using freebmd I have found a marriage of Elizabeth Johnson to Andrew Macdonald in the 4th Qu 1919 in Brighton. I am confident that this is the right marriage as my grandfather was born in the following Feb in Brighton.

I tried searching then for Elizabeth Grinyer marrying a Johnson, but failed. The closest I can get is an Elizabeth Greeyner marrying William Johnson in Brighton in the 1st Qu 1910. If this is a case of misspelling in the records I have a bit of a problem.

I searched the 1901 census for Elizabeth Grinyer, and 2 are found in Brighton, mother and daughter. The mother is 33 years of age, the daughter is 3 years of age.

If the mother in the census then went on to marry a further 2 times (Johnson then Macdonald) she would have been over 50 when she had my grandfather, the eldest of 4, with the last born in 1929, when she would have been over 60. For this reason I have discounted her in favour of her daughter.

Elizabeth jnr (for want of a better phrase) would have been approx 22 at the time of my grandfathers birth in 1920 so is a much more likely prospect. She would have been approx 21 at the time of her marriage to Andrew Macdonald in 1919. The problem here is she would have been approx 12 at the time of the Greenyer/Johnson marriage in 1910. Obviously this doesnt sound right.

There is the chance that the Greenyer/Johnson marriage in 1910 is a red herring, but without a Grinyer/Johnson marriage at any point between 1910 and 1919 I dont know what else to think.

Hopefully if I havent lost you already you might be able to offer me some advice so that I can figure out what is going in here.

Cheers

Paul
