The Common Room / Your own family tree website
« on: Sunday 10 September 17 18:47 BST (UK)  »
I posted about this on here a few weeks back and thought it may be worth following up with a bit more information to see if there would be any interest if i offered this as a service...

I created a private website for my parents a number of years ago as they, along with most of my other family do not live locally to me and they loved hearing when i had new information found about our ancestory. This was a password protected website so just gave the log in details to those who would want to view it.

The site had quite a lot of detail, including individual profile pages, census pages, blogs of research and website additions, photos etc.

I have been thinking and could probably offer 3 different packages:

1 - basic - home page introduction, family tree overview with max 1 photo per famioy member (so you can see the connections but not individual personal profile pages), contact page
《ideal for people who just have basic information just as names and dates and to see everyone connected 》

2 -mid range - as above but also with individual profile pages to contain such information as B,M, D, siblings, personal notes, up to 5 photos (or attachments if wanting scans of bmd certs)
《Ideal for people more in to the research and documentation of their family 》

3 - full package 1- as above and also more photos attachments per individual page, log in details and lessons so you can add or amend information,  create blogs, add calender which will also notify you of relevant dates such as bmd, anniversaries etc
   - full package 2 - as above but instead of you having control, it will be myself who will dedicate a set amount of hours a month to do the posting and updating and for you.
《 ideal for people who are continuinly researching and updating their research 》
Obviously this is just first ideas so there is a lot of thinking and tweaking to finalize details, but im just putting feelers out to see what people think + also your suggestions as to what you think would be good for me to include.

Thoughts on this are very much appreciated

Many thanks

Rachael

The Common Room / Your family tree online
« on: Monday 14 August 17 15:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
When I was teaching myself web development I practised various things by creating my parents a website each with the family tree info for their side of the family.
It included information, certificates, pictures, dates - I have blog pages of updates from research I had done, where I was at with each person, if I was stuck on anyone, why etc.

As my parents don't live locally any more, nor do the rest of my family I made this for them for a Christmas present. I made it secure and passworded it so they could give the password to other family members to view the research I had found out.

I was wondering if anyone else has done this or anything similar?

I think in the day and age we are in now it is a brilliant way to keep in touch with family members and keep up to date on any new information, pictures, stories etc.

Other Countries / Ancestry of Bangladesh
« on: Tuesday 15 December 15 15:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I am quite confident in my own family tree research, but barely stretches out of Lincolnshire let alone England.
My friend wants me to look in to her family tree if possible but I'm not sure where to start it.

Her parents moved to England from Bangladesh in the 70s and as far as she is aware her ancestry is from there / India.

I don't think ancestry will allow me to search there?
Any pointers as to where I can start?

Cheers

Hi Guys,
I have been on and off the chatroom tonight getting some brilliant help as I progressed through my researchful evening. But I am hoping someone could give me some advice as to what I may have found out. It's not particulaly a look up request as such, so please feel free to move to another forum if is better.
It could be a bit confusing so I hope I explain it well:

Great Grandad Albert Daykin (1868-1945)
Married to Ann Eliza Surfleet in 1898 (1878-1944)

1871 Census states he is 3 and lives with George Dakins - 56 and has George Mentioned as his dad (along side Ann, George's wife and George W another son)
1881 Census states he lives with George Daykins - 68 and has George mentioned as hi grandad (along side Ann, George's Wife and William, another son)

Now going back on George and Ann's Census'
1851Census states George - 34 living with Wife Ann, Daughter Charlotte (16 mo) and another daughter Isabella (2 mo)
1861 Census states George -45 Living with Charlotte -11 his daughter
and same year Ann living as a servant with another family.

I have the Birth Certificate of Albert which states his mother being Charlotte Daykins and no father details.
I also have the marriage certificate of Albert and Ann which states George Daykin being his father.

If this is the same Charlotte who is Albert's dad then she was 16 in 1868 when she had him.

So my question is, what does this sound like has happened?
In my mind I have a few different theories, I'm hoping it's not one though!
A) Charlotte got pregnant by someone (an unknown) therefore claimed the child to be his in 1871 on the census, and helped raise him (hence why he is listed as the father on Albert's marriage cert)
B)Something untoward happened between George and Charlotte, hence why she did not mention a father on the birth certificate

I can't find a Census which may be for Albert in 1891 when he would have been 23 (not yet married)
Nor for Charlotte in 1871 (when she would have been 21) or 1881 (31)

Thank you for reading, any ideas / experiences /advice as to what I could look in to next would be highly appreciated

Armed Forces / James Ashford's part in WWI?
« on: Monday 19 November 12 19:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi guys,

I am looking for some information as to what the below persons role in WWI was.

Born James William Ashford May 20th 1897 in Suffolk (possibly born in Barningham, Suffolk and registered in Thetford, Norfolk) he apparently joined up when he was 17 so would have been in 1915.

It was a high probability he joined up to a Suffolk Regiment, but Bedford or Hertforshire could also be possibilities.

I know that he spent some time in the hospital while he was enlisted as he was gassed.

I have checked on the National Archives website and have found a James Ashford in 9th Suffolk Regiment when he was 18 - regiment # 13754 ( ref # WO 372/1/128927) - although it is hard to know if this is the correct person at the moment.

Are there any other sites or places I could check which could help me further with my search?

Much Appreciated

Rachael

The Lighter Side / Careers in Genealogy / Family Research
« on: Tuesday 21 February 12 12:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi guys,
First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong board, wasn't sure where may be best to post.

Anyways, I am being made redundant and through one unfortunate thing or another I've never quite had a 'career' as such. Mainly down to never being sure what I would love to do, I've always done what I've been good at just because I can rather than really thinking about what I want out of a job & I am going to be made redundant so all these options are re opening for me again.
So, psychoanalysis cut short, I'm contemplating a future career in genealogy of some sorts.

I was wondering if anyone here makes a living out of it, I am willing to go back to College, so any course advise would be great.
I would love to hear your thoughts and any advise you may be able to offer?

Thanks
Rachael

Lincolnshire / Ellen Emma Poole / Joseph - Londonthorpe
« on: Sunday 29 January 12 22:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I would really appreciate if anyone can help me make sense of the below;

Ellen Emma Poole -Born 1869 in Londonthorpe Lincolnshire.

Married in 1892 aged 23 to Robinson Gill.
Found 1901 Census living with Robinson and Kids in Swineshead
Found 1911 census Living with new husband Charles Warsop & kids in swineshead also with May Poole aged 14 (niece)

I cannot find her 1891 census when she would have been 21/22, but I have found the 1881 census in Spittlegate Lincolnshire;

Joseph Bailey 27 - Father (born spittlegate)
Elizabeth Bailey 33 - Mother
Emma Poole - 12
Christopher Bailey - 6 - Brother
Joseph Poole - 27 - Lodger (born londonthorpe)

This is where I got the information from that her fathers name was Joseph and was born 1854. But that is all I can find out. I don't know about the information above about the Bailey's being her parents - if this was the case why would they have written her name down as Poole?

In 1891 I've found a Joseph Poole who was 36 living in London thorpe - but again Im confused by who he is living with;

Jane Poole - 70- mother
Joseph Poole - 36
Ruth Poole - 23 - Son Wife Ambiguous
Ernest Charity 1/12 - Son Valy

Can anybody shed some light on any of this?

Much Appreciated

Rachael

Armed Forces / occupation 'Soldier'
« on: Sunday 20 November 11 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm trying to look a little further in to the life of my g.grandad. I've got his Marraige certificate, in which his occupation is listed as 'solider'.
How do I find out more information on this / him? I've tried searching his name on ancestry but there are alot of people with simelar names, who I don't think are him.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can progress about finding out more about him being a solider?

Charles Frank Potter - B.1898 in Cowlinge, Suffolk
                                    M. 1919 in Boston, Lincolnshire

Much Appreciated

Rachael
