World War One / British Red Cross & St. J.J.
« on: Tuesday 28 February 12 19:12 GMT (UK)  »
A relative of mine, Harry V. Morton (b. 1875), served during WWI with the British Red Cross and St. John of Jerusalem.  I have found a medal card for him, but that doesn't indicate whether he served at home or abroad.  He received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.  No Regiment number is given.  Can anyone enlighten me?

Can any of you experts kindly clean up this photo and, if possible, whiten her pearls and his pink pocket hanky?

Thanks!

Australia / Radcliffe Wild - Victoria?
« on: Wednesday 31 August 11 18:28 BST (UK)  »
After many years of searching I have finally found my long-lost great grand uncle on a passenger list to Australia.  As he is the first in my tree to venture to Australia, I'm in need of your help!

Radcliffe WILD was born Mar Q 1865 in Bardsley, Lancashire, to a coal mining family, and on the 1881 British census he was a colliery weighman there.  On 29 Sep 1885, at age 20, he is listed as a passenger aboard the SS John Elder (Victoria Assisted & Unassisted Passenger List), arrival port: Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney (why 3 of them?), departure port: London (why not Liverpool, which was closer?).

There appears to be a death for him in Australia in 1908, but no further details given.  Is there anywhere online that would give me more information as to where he settled, if he married and where/how he died?  Or can anyone do a look-up for me?

I'd be very grateful for any info at all.

The Common Room / 41 people in one grave??
« on: Wednesday 05 January 11 01:06 GMT (UK)  »
I've just been searching the Manchester City Online Burial Records and was quite shocked to find that out of 10 graves on the page I was looking at (for Harold Davies), 8 of them contained over 20 unrelated people, and one as many as 41!  I'm very curious to know how that was possible?

The Common Room / Alien Arrivals Help
« on: Monday 13 September 10 18:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

My 2xgreat-grandfather arrived in England from Rovigno in the early 1800's.  Can someone kindly help me out with any details for "Mr. Benussi, arrival - Dover, England".

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Ford Cemetery
« on: Thursday 15 July 10 20:42 BST (UK)  »
I live in Canada and am hoping that anyone who may be visiting Ford Cemetery in the near future could do a lookup for me, please?  I'm looking for any Benussi's or Bontempo's, who were RC, living in Liverpool, and are possibly buried there.  (There weren't many of them, and they were all related.)

Thanks in advance.

The Common Room / Legality of second marriage
« on: Monday 31 May 10 00:45 BST (UK)  »
Just wondering...

In the early 1900's, if a couple separated and the wife emigrated to another country, would the husband, not knowing whether she was alive or dead, be legally entitled to remarry after a certain period of time?  Or would it still be considered bigamous unless he had proof of her death?

Does anyone know where I can find out which towns are covered by Liverpool North, Liverpool South and West Derby on the Civil Registration Indexes?  For an ancestor who lived in Bootle, Aintree or Crosby, for instance, I'm not sure if I should be looking for the exact town or if they're all lumped together in one large district.  They seem to change depending on the year in which you're searching!

Thanks,

United States of America / Donnenworth - Alien Arrivals - 1906-1949
« on: Thursday 03 December 09 22:43 GMT (UK)  »
I'm helping a friend with her tree, and have found a Mrs Wm Donnenworth, who would be her grandmother, listed as an "Alaskan Alien Arrival".  Could someone please do a lookup for us?
