The Common Room / Birth Certificate query
« on: Friday 16 September 22 20:00 BST (UK)  »
Am I right to think that, if a married couple (in about 1920) have a child and before the mother registers the child's birth the father has died, the father's name will still be entered on the birth certificate?

Merionethshire Lookup Requests / Marriage at Llanfor parish 1785-1790?
« on: Wednesday 05 February 20 19:39 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder whether anyone can help?

I'm looking for the marriage of Jenkin Edwards and Catherine Thomas in about 1785-1790, which may have taken place in Llanfor parish.
Their first-born was baptised in Llangwm parish in 1790, their last child had a non-conformist baptism in Cerrigydrudion in 1815. Catherine Thomas's parish before marriage was said to be Llanfor in the latter.
Their marriage is not recorded in either Llangwm or Cerrigydrudion parish records.

Any help appreciated.

South Africa / Lewis Humphreys Jones in South Africa
« on: Wednesday 26 September 18 20:08 BST (UK)  »
Born in 1875 in Birmingham, England to Welsh parents, Lewis Humphreys Jones was at the family home at 19 Bradford Street, Birmingham in 1881 and 1891. I next see him in two passenger lists:

1) Arriving at Plymouth on 11 May 1916 on RMS Saxon having embarked from Cape Town. South Africa is his country of last permanent residence. Lewis Humphreys Jones is a mechanic aged 41 and is accompanied by - wife Danielira Fredericka Jones, 35; sons Alfred, 13; Lewis, 8, Stanley, 11 months and daughter Gladys, 11. (Ancestry)

2) Departing UK from London for Cape Town on 22 Jul 1916, the passenger list does not give full names, only Mr L H Jones, mechanic, 41, Mrs Jones, wife, 35 etc., but clearly the same family group (Findmypast).

The only South African record I have found for Lewis Humphreys Jones is a Transvaal Probate record dated 1933 which refers to the death of a Lewis Humphreys Jones age 24 - this is the son Lewis Jones, aged 8 in 1916. This document says father deceased, mother's name Danalira Fredrika Jacoba Jones (Fisher). Lewis was born at Premier Mine, he was a British national and was a millwright S.A.R. (South African Railways perhaps?). He was 24 years 10 months when he died on 28 Apr 1933 at Church Street West, Pretoria.

I have no previous experience of researching South African family history. Is it possible that BMD records are available for Lewis (senior), his wife and children?

One other relevant document on FamilySearch refers, in Afrikaans, to Lewis senior's wife. It appears to be the Probate record for her father Lowies Jeremias Cornelius Fisher and names his children including Danelina Frederica Jacoba Jones (nee Fisher b. 15 Jul 1880).

Many thanks in advance for any further information that can be given.

Caernarvonshire / Burial-Hugh Lewis Llanberis 1886
« on: Monday 11 June 18 08:44 BST (UK)  »
The burial register for Llanberis records the burial of Hugh Lewis, age 60, of Pen y bryn (Nant Isaf) on the 23 Mar 1886. A comment has been added - an old quarry agent dismissed. In the margin at the foot of the page there is a further comment in Welsh referring to this burial. I have attached it to this post (I hope). I have translated it as best I can:

He was a very prominent man with the Calvinists. He was a deacon and a .... preacher. Once ..... in Dinorwig Quarry, he was among the officers who were dismissed. Between the end of 1885 and the start of 1886........

..... are the parts I'm struggling with. I'll be very grateful if someone can correct and complete the translation.

Does anyone know any more about this story?

Flintshire / Hannah Morris/William Chambers
« on: Saturday 02 June 18 15:22 BST (UK)  »
In his will written 13 Feb 1838 Richard Morris (1755-Aug 1840) of Golftyn, Northop left the bulk of his estate to his son William. There was a bequest of £12 to his daughter Sarah Morris and another £12 to 'my daughter Hannah the wife of William Chambers'. Help please, this is the only reference I can find for Hannah Morris/Chambers.

The information I have for Hannah's parents and siblings is summarised below:

Mother Catherine Lamb (1762-1836) married Richard Morris, Chester, 18 Nov 1785.
Other children - all baptised Northop - Mary (1788), John (1790), Catherine (1792), Thomas (1796), Richard (1798), William (1800), Sarah (1802), Robert (1805), Susannah (1807).

Thanks in advance.

The Common Room / Will revoked after death
« on: Wednesday 21 March 18 11:42 GMT (UK)  »
In what circumstances would a will be revoked after death? Am I still able to obtain a copy of such a will?

Details from Find a will - "Parry Evan ..... died 7 December 1918. Administration (with will) 15 January to Ann Parry widow. Effects £198 5s 6d. Revoked April 1919."

Denbighshire / Which parish?
« on: Friday 05 January 18 19:49 GMT (UK)  »
On FindmyPast there are a number of images of marriages dated about 1790 taking place in a parish in Denbighshire - but they do not seem to know which parish it is, in the transcription the 'place' is blank!

The marriage which particularly interests me took place on 30 Jan 1790 between Thomas Jones of Ruabon Parish, bachelor, son of John Jones, Collier by Anne his wife, aged 20 and Mary Edwards of this Parish, spinster, daughter of Edward Edwards, Shoemaker, by Mary his wife, aged 23. They were married by the vicar Edward Jones.

In addition to Ruabon, other parishes mentioned by name (in other marriages shown) and so, presumably, not 'this Parish' are Llantysilio, Wrexham, Corwen and Bryn Eglwys.

Does anyone know where this marriage took place?

Caernarvonshire / Was Evan Rowland Bridget Rowland's brother?
« on: Tuesday 18 July 17 17:23 BST (UK)  »
Llanberis Burial records have - Evan Rowland, Garddau bach, age 66, buried 11 Nov 1840. I am searching for his baptism and parents' names.

His life is documented in Llanberis records from his marriage 4 Jan 1799 to Anne Jones, through the baptisms of ten children between 1799 to 1826 to his death.

Llanberis Burial records also record the death of Bridget Rowland, Garddau, 22 Feb 1818 aged 41. There is an additional note - 'died of a Fever, she came on a visit to her father from Conway & was taken ill on the road'. About two months later her father died - Rowland William, miner, Garddau, 24 Mar 1818, aged 73. Again there is an additional note - 'died of the fever soon after his Daughter'.

I'm looking for some proof that both Evan and Bridget Rowland are children of Rowland William. Their baptisms are not in Llanberis parish records.

Anglesey / Thomas Willins bapt. Holyhead 1772
« on: Thursday 28 January 16 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas son of Joseph Willins and wife Anne (Jones) was baptised at Holyhead 27 Sep 1772. He was named as a beneficiary in his father's will dated April 1815. I can find nothing else about him.

The family surname causes problems - it is recorded as Willins, Wellens, Wellins and others, and is often mis-transcribed as Williams.

I know of these siblings of Thomas who survived to adulthood:
Catherine 1777 - 1840, married Humphrey Mark at Holyhead 1803.
Jane 1780 - 1854, married William Jones at Holyhead 1802.
Joseph 1782 - 1825, married Mary Edwards at Llanfachraeth 1808.

Joseph Willins was farming at Glantraeth, Holyhead (or Llanynghenedl?) when he died and the details from his will suggest that Thomas was far from being the favourite child.

Beneficiaries:
Thomas Willins - son £1. John Jaggard - son in law 1 shilling. Jane Jones - daughter £10. William Jaggard - grandson £20 "and all my wearing apparel". Catherine Marks - daughter £60 (+"all my cows, pigs, sheep and half of the crops of every description that shall be, or to grow on my land after my decease" + half share "of all household furniture".   Joseph Willins - grandson "one calf from the cow called Mila(?). Joseph Willins - son half share "of all household furniture", " all the rest, residue and remainder of my worldly goods and effects whatsoever".

Help in tracing Thomas Willins will be much appreciated, also I haven't been able to identify the wife of John Jaggard, mother of William Jaggard, who presumably is an unknown daughter of Joseph Willins and Ann Jones.
