The Common Room / 1939 Register Annotations
« on: Saturday 14 January 23 10:14 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone please help with the annotations added to the left hand column mean please. I was looking at a great aunt in my tree, of whom I know very little, and on doing an Ancestry search came up with her in the register married to a music hall entertainer and living in London.
Her surname has been crossed out and her maiden name added with 9.4.45 (date) I C ANA M in the left column. I can only assume she left or lost her husband and reverted to her maiden name.

Cornwall / No Father For William
« on: Friday 08 April 22 16:55 BST (UK)  »
I found the parish baptism register for Germoe, Cornwall, on FamilySearch, for William Richards on the 11th February 1776.
All the other listings show both parents, but poor William is shown as "son of Elizabeth Richards". This makes me wonder whether his father had died before his birth. I'm fairly sure his parents were Thomas Richards and Elizabeth Harry. I've found nothing on Thomas other than his marriage record.
Any help would be very welcome as I've made it my 5th g/grandfather and would like to go further.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Dundee Hibernian
« on: Tuesday 22 February 22 14:09 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather played for Hibs in their early days before WW1. Someone reminded me that they were a Catholic team and, to the best of my knowledge, the family were Protestant. He certainly attested to that when joining the army. The family lived in the Lochee district of Dundee, which had a large Irish community, but all the Parish records, relating to the family, pre 1856 are Church of Scotland. Is it likely that a protestant could be on the team? The family name is Scrimgeour.

The Common Room / Answering one query seems to bring more

I thought I had my maternal family well sorted out until I got my G/Grandmothers death certificate. This said that Alexander Shiel, her son, was present at her death. None of her ten children was called Alexander. A GRO search shows only two people of that name born in her probable fertile lifetime, but none with her named as the mother. This geneology game can turn you grey, if you haven't already got there

South Africa / Dundee-Transvaal-Dundee
« on: Sunday 17 October 21 16:21 BST (UK)  »
Alexander Scrimgeour (a stonemason) and Jessie McDonald Malcolm (his wife) had a child in Dundee on 22/4/1890, then my grandfather was born on the 12/5/1894 in the Transvaal, followed by a daughter on 16/6/1897 in Dundee. I can't find either of them on a passenger list and wonder if anyone one can do better than me. I did broach this topic back in 2011 but thought things may have changed since then.

Devon / Edith Mary Coomber(Cocks)
« on: Sunday 17 January 21 16:46 GMT (UK)  »
Edith Mary is my maternal grandmother. Born 18/11/1890 in Devonport. Her birth certificate shows her parents as Charles Cocks and Elizabeth Ann Cocks (previously Coomber). Elizabeth had three children before Edith with her husband Jethro Coomber and is shown on her wedding certificate as Elizabeth Ann Cocks. Edith had three children out of wedlock and is showing living with her brother and grandmother in ',91, '01' and '11 census.
I've found a marriage of Edith Mary Coomber to John Donoghue in Nov1920 but the her age is given as 1896 and her father as Frank Coomber, a deceased Naval Pensioner.
On the face of it this isn't my grandmother, but I can't find a birth at the right time or a naval record for a Frank, except one born in 1881 making him a very young father.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

The Common Room / Ancestry UK Offers

I've cancelled the renewal of my subscription for the 26th of May, primarily because I can't afford £180. I wonder if anyone has a code for a cheap deal? Thank you in anticipation.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What is his first name

I was rather hoping that Mr. Coomber's first name would be Jethro but I can't get any sensible name from this. Any help would be appreciated
