Technical Help / Windows Defender alert - but is it a scam?
« on: Thursday 16 March 23 20:23 GMT (UK)  »
I am getting a message (not an email) -- a page that says Windows Defender - System Warning.   Critical Threat Detected: Ardware App.

Then, on a white background, another message that says: Confirm the action on the page https://     Access to this PC has been disabled.   Please contact support.

          And ...   Get Help   Dismiss

I think it must be a scam.    For a start, it says that the PC has been disabled - BUT MY LAPTOP IS GOING PERFECTLY WELL!     Also, I have had several problems on the laptop, going back 15 years but Defender has never contacted me once.     I have McAffee as well for security but there has been no warning from them about anything being wrong.

Am I right in thinking it is a scam?      I don't want to click anything on the page in case this is just what they need to get into my computer.

Technical Help / HP Printer not working
« on: Saturday 18 February 23 18:55 GMT (UK)  »
I have an HP Deskjet 3634 Printer.     The on off button is flashing on and off and I can't print or scan anything.     I am using Windows 10 with Firefox browser.     Earlier on I replaced the two ink cartridges, and when I tried to use the printer it wasn't working.     I think it has lost its connection with my laptop.      Is there an easy way to get back to normal?

Technical Help / Scanned item won't delete from screen
« on: Saturday 24 December 22 07:50 GMT (UK)  »
I scanned an image yesterday, and this morning that image is on my main opening screen, superimposed on top of the short-cut icons.     I can still use the short cut icons to get into all my sites but just can't seem to shift the image, which covers about a quarter of the screen and partly obscures the short cut icons.      I tried refreshing Firefox - no luck.       I tried a Clean Up of the computer using Wise Tech - no luck.      Can't figure out why this is happening.      How do I sort this?

Technical Help / Email from Amazon ???
« on: Friday 02 December 22 07:26 GMT (UK)  »
I received an email from Amazon.co.uk headed Look out for online scammers.      Has anyone else received this?     Is it genuine or is this itself a scam?       The scammers are trying to fool us all the time, and I am reluctant to even open it.       Yet if I just delete it, it may be a useful bit of information.
In two minds about this.       When I brought up my incoming Emails page this morning, it was there, having been sent to me at 12.03.      In other words midnight.

Technical Help / Problem loading photos onto Timeline on Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 21 September 22 11:29 BST (UK)  »
Usually I have no problem when I load a photo from the Gallery on Ancestry onto the Timeline of an ancestor.       Lately, the photo appears perfectly fine in the gallery - yet when I load it onto the the Timeline, the head of my ancestor is chopped off.    That is to say that somehow the top inch or so of the photo appears to be cropped off.       Can't figure out how to fix it.       Can anyone help?

P.S.   I feel sure that it is something to do with the scanning process.

Technical Help / Can anyone tell me if I am being scammed?
« on: Wednesday 03 August 22 22:05 BST (UK)  »
I have received an email, which says "Your transfer is successful.   The receipt is attached to this email.    Contact the support number for any queries,
                                                                              Regards,
                                                                                            Support."

In an attachment, it says     ZELLE

You have sent £399 dollars to Mark Stein.   They are required to ship out the item and get back to us.      ...They give an American contact number and a Transaction number.

I don't know what it is all about.       Can anyone help me?

Technical Help / Print-out problem
« on: Thursday 28 July 22 17:25 BST (UK)  »
I update the Timelines for my various ancestry regularly, maybe adding a census or a marriage here and there that I didn't have before, etc.    I then sometimes take a printout of that person.

However, I haven't been on the computer so much lately, and my memory is deteriorating due to old age problems.    Previously, when I had taken printouts of an ancestor's Timeline, everything was perfect.     The size of the font was just right, which was the main thing.

Problem at the moment is that the size of the print on my latest printouts is too large.      I need to reduce the size of the print.      It should be easy to alter the print size.     Yet I am stuck!

(I am using the Anc..try site.)

Lanarkshire / COMPLETED - Illegitimacy on my timeline
« on: Wednesday 06 July 22 09:09 BST (UK)  »
Grandmother had illegitimate children, back in the 1920's.      As she lived in a small village, her husband allowed the children to take his surname to avoid the awful scandal that would follow if the truth came out.   It was covered up each time.      It would have brought great shame on my grandmother otherwise.

My grandfather did move away from the village to find work in Glasgow but being a kindhearted man, he kept in touch with her.   Grandmother then moved to another village.

How could I work this on my Family Tree?    On my Family Tree, the children have my grandfather's name.       How can I include the real father?

I guess this problem happens all the time with folk who have taken a DNA test and find a skeleton in the cupboard.

Technical Help / Is this a scam?
« on: Wednesday 08 June 22 12:18 BST (UK)  »
Received a phone call from 01983 872 997 just 15 minutes ago saying that various suspicious sums of money had been taken from my Visa Debit card.     Caller was female and spoke so rapidly,
you don't have time to take in much of what she is saying.      Phone calls from there seem to be from the Isle of Wight.      Anybody else had this call?
