Ireland / Help and Advice...
« on: Monday 21 November 22 17:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hey All.

Been a while since i lurked around here, but have had to come back as picked up some stuff for my Mother in law/other half and have got stuck.

Looking to try find out where a William Stewart comes from (GGF) which is apparently Ireland (north or south i have no clue).

What I know:
William was c.19 in 1911 when he married Margaret Devoy (c.20-22) and from the marriage certificate i can see his father was Georg (maybe Alexander) Stewart and mother Mary Smith. I cannot get the 1921 census yet, so unsure of where they are at this point, but can see Maggie living with William and Mary jane Devoy on the 1911 census, so assuming before they got married.

William and Margaret has 5 children (Albert Samuel, John David, Lizzie and Mary) not sure of the order as haven't tracked them all yet, but David was born on 14/7/14 then at some point we believe William left and went to Canada. So trying to work out how i can track where he was born and find out when he shot of to Canada, and potentially see where.

Any help and advice appreciated :)

Cavan / Help - On the scrounge...
« on: Tuesday 27 February 18 10:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All. As usual I'm on the scrounge for help as hit a brick wall...and living in Scotland it isn't easy for me to tap into Irish resources.

So tracing  my family back I got some details on this side of the water for my GGGGF George (Wesley?) Maguire who seems to have been born in Ireland (Think Cavan or surrounding area) to  a John McGuire (Maguire) and Margaret Brown (Browne). Seemed to have to potential matches, but not sure how or if I can make the final connection to either

Possible Connection 1: John McGuire B1828 Cavan Margaret Brown 9/3/1825 Ashfield, Cavan (Parents: John/Margaret) Margaret Browne 4/9/1821 Ashfield Cavan (Parents: James/Jane)

Possible Connection 2: Marriage: John Maguire - Margaret Browne Ireland Civil Reg Indexes 1845-1858 Film: 101241 Vol:4 Page:365 Image: 204 (John) 315 (Margaret) Cootehill, Cavan, Ireland
1846

I have George Maguire (McGuire) on the following:

1871 Marriage to Mary Hendry on 27/02/1871 and he is down as either being 22 or 24 (can't read)
Here it has John McGuire and Margaret n. Brown (both deceased)

1891 Census George McGuire, 44, Commercial St, Glasgow
Birth place is down as Ireland, which pushed me to search for John and Margaret there.

Any help appreciated...this one has stumped me and frustrated I cannot get past this. Happy to travel to Ireland but only if i can get a bit more solid info...would like to see if i could go back another generation or two, but guess it now gets difficult.

Armed Forces / Help - Finding out of someone was a soldier
« on: Friday 05 January 18 20:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.

As usual, after some help knowing where to start. Now adding wife's side to family tree and we are interested in whether her grandad was in the army at all. No one in family can advise and he has passed, so no army details (if any)...and name relatively common.

David Stewart D.O.B: 14/7/14, lived Coatbridge, think born here too.

How best to start?

Cheers

World War One / Help - Looking for details of soldier - George Maguire
« on: Tuesday 05 December 17 13:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All.

Doing some research on my family and looking at my Great Great Grandfather. I am trying to work what role (if any) he played in WW1. I don't have any real detail other than the following:

Name: George Maguire
Regiment: Gunner in Royal Field Artillery (this is according to his sons marriage certificate from 1916)

I think he would have been around 44 in 1916 (Born 1872) based on some previous info i think i found where he was 9 in the 1881 census and 19 at his marriage in 1891. he was a Glasgow man. Not sure if 44 was too old for him to be involved in the war or maybe he was in the army but based at home. Any help appreciated.

Cavan / McGuire/Maguire - George, John , Margaret...
« on: Friday 10 June 11 09:22 BST (UK)  »
hi All,

Looking for some help from those maybe a little closer to Cavan or more knowleagable. Trying to organise a trip over once the other half agrees

I have traced my GGGGF George (wesley?) Maguire back to Ireland, it seems he may have been born between 1847-51(based on Census ages from Glasgow records) and possibly baptised on Feb 2 1851 in Megheralin, Co.Down (although I am not convinced on this info as got it second hand). On his wedding certificate it states his parent are John McGuire (Carter) and Margaret McGuire (nee: Brown) both marked as deceased at his wedding in 1871.

I was given details that the marraige was Feb 7th1846, Drung, Cavan by a relative doing some research but could not locate exacrtly but found.

John McGuire - Margaret Browne - 1846 Cootehill, cavan Ireland.

I am struggling as it seems harder to get details regarding Ireland online, and don't know where to start to find Georges birth and then his parents details. Any help from any experienced person would be appreciated.

Thanks
Stovie

Lanarkshire / Help - McGuire/Maguire - Glasgow...
« on: Wednesday 25 May 11 22:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi All...

Just wondering if any one can help me as hit sticking point...

Have been tracing my family back and cannot find one death record for my GGG Grand father George Maguire...so wondering what happened or whether he is still kicking about the Gorbals somewhere. Can find his marriage in 1871 to Mary Hendry, can see him in the 1881 and 1891 censuses living with Mary and family (have managed to get copies of them)...but then i just lose him.

Any suggestions...problems i think I have are the name Maguire is sometimes McGuire (Censuses seem to be McGuire and marriage details Maguire, kids births etc Maguire) and old George lies about his age 22 when married, 30 at the 81 census and 44 at the 91 census. Maybe the concept of time back them was not as good as now. He was born in ireleand which has made tracking this back even harder. Although some of you have helped already with this :)

Any advice appreciated.

Been using Scotlands people to get records...so have loads, and taken a few pot shots at some Georges that just don't seem to have tied in.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Name Help - Ann, Anna, Anne...???
« on: Sunday 14 March 10 12:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Just wanting some thoughts on the mothers name. I initally thought Ann, however not convinced as I could find any marraige or census info on Ann and Robert, have found both a Anna and Anne with a marraige to Robert Murray, now it comes to spending some cash so wnated to see what you thought...shall I risk Anna or Anne first...?

Or is it something completely different?

Thanks
Stovie
