World War Two / WW2 Defence Medal
« on: Monday 30 June 14 11:31 BST (UK)  »
I've just come across a small box addressed to my late father in law, which contains a Defence Medal, ribbon, and a piece of paper just saying words to the effect that this is a Defence Medal relating to the period 1939 - 1945.

I had no idea he had been awarded this, and would like to know why he got it - as far as I know he wasn't in the military, but I think about that time he was a senior (if not chief) Accountant for a predecessor of British Rail, so maybe a reseved occupation. Presumably tho' he wouldn't have been awarded a medal just for that - so does anyone know where I might find further info - is there some kind of gazette ?

(I can't ask my husband as he has also died  :'( )

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Ivy Joyce Wilson
« on: Saturday 16 February 13 00:02 GMT (UK)  »
My friend has asked me to help trace this relative. We don't have a lot of info, but the lady (now decd) was born 22.12.1920, probably in the Elgin (Moray) area. We also know she had a son, possibly still living, at a place called Fyvie House in Elgin. This child was born 13.12.1943 and was adopted not long after the birth, and taken to the Edgware area of London (there is a photo of him at 6 weeks, taken by a local photographer)

I know it's a bit of a long shot, but if anyone recognises the name &/or has any inof, however small, we would be very grateful

I have posted this on the Moray board, but posted here too, just on the off chance ;D

Denbighshire / 1911 census look up please
« on: Friday 20 April 12 00:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm trying to find out who was living at Bowden House, Chapel Street, Abergele since 1901 (I have this census & all the previous ones), so would be very grateful if someone could look this up for me. In 1901 it was a Robert Jones & his family, and at some point in the future it was Thomas Davies & family, but I don't know when they came.

I would also like to know the occupants of the houses on either side - all (about 5 or 6) from the George & Dragon pub, to the two houses beyond Bowden House, particularly any or all of : "Bron Myfyr" "Drug Stores" "Dim Coed" "Gele House"

Thanks in advance  :)

Cheers,
Chris

Cumberland / old pub trophies from the Ship Inn Cockermouth !
« on: Sunday 08 April 12 14:26 BST (UK)  »
Bit of a wild card, this one ! We have quite a few old trophies that came from the Ship Inn in Cockermouth several years ago as it was closing down.
The Leagues they related to appear to no longer exist, but I was wondering if they would be of interest to anyone on here ?

They are for:
Cockermouth & District Pool League (various)
Cockermouth Winter Pool League (Jennings Brothers Ltd Challenge Trophy)
Cockermouth Confined Darts League (various)
Cockermouth & District Summer Darts League (the Dick Smith Memorial Trophy)

plus an unused Cockermouth Childrens Carnival plaque

We don't want money for them, but would like any postage costs covered (we are in Cheshire)

Hope this is of use to someone !  :)

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Whaley Bridge censuses please
« on: Tuesday 02 August 11 09:00 BST (UK)  »
My daughter has just moved to Whaley Bridge, and is interested in the history of her new home. I've started to do a bit of research & think I have found the cottage on a map c 1880, but now I'm struggling !

The address is 7 Wheatsheaf Cottages, Wheatsheaf Rd, Whaley Bridge - it is a row of 8 terraced cottages backing on to the river, and they look like typical mill workers housing.

If anyone would trawl thro the censuses and could find any info on occupants / ages/ occupations etc, we would both be very grateful  :)

London and Middlesex / Smith and Hope (and a Woodward) families - photos
« on: Friday 29 January 10 09:32 GMT (UK)  »
I am in the process of scanning in some old photos found in my late sister in law's belongings. They contain some old photos of what I believe are members of the Smith & Hope families from the Harrow area and previously St Pancras / Marylebone. Two people I have identified are Alice Kathleen Smith who married Sydney George Hope and their children, her sister Daisy Gertrude Smith, as well as Alice Mary Woodward (mother of Alice Kathleen & Daisy Gertrude). There are also others who I have no idea as to who they are !

If anyone is interested in copies of these photos, please get in touch

Cheers,
Chris

« on: Friday 30 October 09 14:19 GMT (UK)  »
Is there an online index that anyone knows of ? I have a London newspaper proprietor in my files, but have no idea which paper he owned / ran !

I have tried googling his name, but to no avail, and have been going round in circles ever since  ::)
