Could I ask for assistance in the translation of the Emigration document attached.

In particular. the Commune, Profession and Depart.

On her arrival in Fremantle aboard the Cathay (24.3.1930), Marguerite Victoria Friederich gave her occupation as Governess.

She was born England (1905) and educated in Switzerland and I am trying to find more information on her whilst she was there. She could have been in Switzerland c1915-1930.

Thanking you,
John.

Death Certificate GRO details for Susan Heggie Fimister:
Died 7 April 1872 of Phthisis (2 years) at No 1 Russell Place, aged 24 and wife of James Fimister, Engineer, Steam Vessel.
James Fimister was present at death at 1 Russell Place, Poplar.

The couple had recently returned from Constantinople (after 1871 Census) where they had lived for the past several years. I am presuming they had very recently returned to the UK because of her illness. Her husband returning to Constantinople some time after her death to return to his employment and leaving their son in the care of his grandmother in Scotland.

I am presuming the address is somewhere around the Docks area but would appreciate someone with the knowledge of that area at the time may be able to pinpoint its exact location and and suggestions as to where she may have been buried if locally.

Best Regards, John.

Wigtownshire / Miln Dam Rd and Whirry Park Isle of Whithorn Query.
« on: Tuesday 06 September 22 05:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
I am trying to identify the properties listed below in the Will of Capt Francis Carlyle Broadfoot (1803-1874) who died in I.O.Whithorn in 1874.

There is a mention of Miln Damn Road and Isle of Whirry Park.

Can anyone identify either of these two places mentioned.

Capt Broadfoot did live sometime at Dunbar House on Tonderghie Row but I don't presume that this is the property referred to below.

Regards,

Sue

Hi Rootschatters,

My Northern Ireland Bell’s came over to Scotland from Down and Antrim just prior to the 1851 Census and like many others worked in the Lanarkshire Coal & Iron industries.
From the scant Northern Ireland information that I have listed below what would your advice be regarding my approach to searching for more detailed information as to their whereabouts in Northern Ireland prior to 1851.

Regards,
John.

Australia / Royal Australian Navy. WW1 Ship Identification please.
« on: Wednesday 25 August 21 06:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Can somebody give me help in identifying the name of the Royal Australian Naval ship as listed on the man's record and listed between HMAS Cerberus and HMAS Sydney on the file attached.(see file attached).
The ship in question must have sailed between Australia and the UK between 31.8.1918 and 8.1.1919 as the Able Seaman on board the Cerberus then joined the crew of the Sydney as it headed back to Australia.
There is also evidence of the Able Seaman being on leave in Scotland in February 1919 before returning to Australia on the Sydney.

Thanking you,
John.

United States of America / Why did Ohioans marry in Newport, Kentucky 1917
« on: Thursday 17 September 20 04:55 BST (UK)  »
I have a couple, both born and living in Corning, Perry County, Ohio who went over the border to marry in Newport, Campbell, Kentucky in 1917 and then return to live in Corning, Ohio.
Looking through the marriage records for 1917/1918 I see a large percentage of the couples married in Newport were from Ohio.
Why did so many couples from Ohio head east over the border to marry in Newport, Kentucky?

Was it cheaper to get married in Kentucky?
Were there less restrictions on getting married in Kentucky?
Were able to marry at a younger age in Kentucky?
Was it just a great place to get married and have a holiday?

In my case the husband was 23 and the wife said she was 21 although I think she was 17.

There seem to be too many couples from Ohio marrying in Newport, Ky for it just to be a coincidence.
Does anybody know the answer!

John.

« on: Wednesday 05 June 19 07:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschat,
I have a great uncle, Andrew Bell, whom I have traced to the Barnhill Poorhouse in Lanarkshire.
I am interested as to why Andrew Bell ended up in the poorhouse, although I suspect alcohol may be a contributor to the reason.
From the information below he was there prior to 1911 up until his death of chronic nephritis in 1918.
Would anyone be able to assist me with access to further records on Andrew over this period of time as I would like to see if he was a permanent inmate over that period of time.

« on: Saturday 02 December 17 00:48 GMT (UK)  »
C.W.DeVilliers, 1913. Who was he?

I have attached an advertisement that was placed in a New Zealand newspaper in 1913 looking for a lost friend by the name of Louis Valentine De Villiers.
Could anyone enlighten me as to who exactly C.W. De Villiers was in 1913 or what his connection to the Attorney General's office in Pretoria might have been. Friend/relative?
I am trying to trace any information on Louis Valentine DeVilliers in South Africa or any other country for that matter, other than in New Zealand prior to 1913.

The advertisement is as follows;

1913. Missing Friends.

Information as to his whereabouts will be gratefully received. About 30 years of age, height 5'11", dark complexion, speaks several languages fluently.
