One Name Studies: N to S / STIFF
« on: Thursday 31 August 06 21:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I've been researching the surname STIFF (my gt. grandmother's maiden name) for about 10 years.  All my ancestors came from Worcestershire.  There are a lot of Stiffs in Suffolk and surrounding areas but I haven't linked any of these with mine.
I'd be interested if anyone has any info on any of the Stiff family in Worcestershire.
Thanks in advance
Amanda

England / A missing Grosvenor
« on: Saturday 15 April 06 21:25 BST (UK)  »
I can’t find my gt-grandfather’s brother on the 1901 Census.
He’s listed on the 1891 Census, but after that, I can’t trace him.

I'm looking for:
Joseph Grosvenor (spelt Grovenor on 1891 census)
Born about 1876 in Cradley Heath (which is under Staffordshire on 1891 census page), son of Samuel and Hannah Grosvenor, living at 48 Providence Street, Cradley Heath, Rowley Regis.

My late gt-aunt said he was married (can’t find that either) to a woman called Lavinia.
I suspect Joseph may have died as she later married his brother Isaac, unless they divorced?  I haven’t ruled out a death in WW1 either, but I can’t find anything.

I’ve checked deaths from 1891 to 1901 and can’t find anything, unless I’ve missed it.
According to my gt-aunt, Joseph and Lavinia had a son, Alfred.

There is a Joseph Grosvenor aged 24 on the 1901 census, but it’s not the one I’m looking for.

It’s all a bit confusing! Could anyone suggest where I may go from here?  I’d be grateful for any help or suggestions.

England / Convict
« on: Thursday 23 March 06 15:04 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know how I would go about tracing a convict after he left prison, or if he died serving time?  Or did the Australian authorities allow them to stay after their sentence was over?

I’ve come across someone who was shipped to Australia in 1854 (he got 10 years for grand larceny).  Do records exist stating if/when they were shipped home?

I haven’t linked him with my family yet, but it’s an unusual surname - STIFF (my great-grandmother's maiden name), so I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a link somewhere.

I’m probably asking the impossible, but I’m curious!

Occupation Interests / Old occupation
« on: Tuesday 15 February 05 15:07 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know what a hatler is?  I found my gt-grandfather on the 1901 census and this is what his occupation is listed as.  I can’t find this in old occupation listings.
Thanks!
