Australia / Richard William STRINGER - what became of him after WW1?
« on: Wednesday 08 July 15 08:36 BST (UK)  »
Am interested to hear what became of Private Richard William Stringer (29th Battalion, transferred to 32nd Battalion late 1918) after WW1. He was awarded the MM along with my grandfather in 1919 for 'conspicuous courage and devotion to duty' late in 1918 but I'm keen to hear about his life following the war. According to the National Archives, Stringer was born in Lauriston, Victoria. He was about 32 years of age and was not married at the time of enlistment. The National Archives show he was residing in Robert Street, Westgarth in 1925. I've deliberately posted here because I'm interested in his life pre and post war. Did he every marry or have children when he returned? What did he do for a living when he returned to Aust? 'Stringer' is a well known family name in the mid-north of South Australia and I initially thought he may have been from that region. The NA records prove me wrong on that point. EB

Armed Forces / Australian War Memorial - original photos not digital copies
« on: Tuesday 22 July 14 09:03 BST (UK)  »
I just received a reply from the Australian War Memorial saying thank you, but no thank you, they couldn't accept digital copies of photos for consideration. Unfortunately I'm not the holder of the original photos in my family otherwise I would have happily donated them so now I'll have to tactfully suggest to the owner they consider donating them.
Rumour has it that this relative may have 'disposed' of the originals and only kept digital copies! Some people have no sense of history :(

So a warning - if family members are going to have a 'cleanout' (and you have forewarning) but they're not prepared to give the photos to anyone else, suggest they make a donation to an appropriate institution or museum. EB

Australia / NSW PASTORAL PROPERTIES (WENTWORTH) - Employee records?
« on: Saturday 18 May 13 00:59 BST (UK)  »
I'm presuming pastoral property owners kept records of their employees but am not sure where to start looking.
I'm particularly interested in the Para Stations (Darling  River, NSW near Wentworth) purchased in February, 1873 by two men, John Cumming of Toorak (Para East) and John Hope a landowner from Clare, South Australia (Para West). I found the sale details on Trove.

My g-g grandmother lived/worked on one of these stations in the late 1800s with her 2nd husband, James Barton Milligan. Details of location were found on the death cert. of my g-g grandmother's niece who was living with them at the time. The young girl was buried on one of these properties. I'm yet to ascertain whether the grave is marked. Looking for it will be like looking for a needle in a haystack! That aside, I'm keen to find out when the Milligans commenced and ceased working at Para and in particular whether other family members joined them.

All suggestions welcome! Thank you.

Australia / JOHN EGGE - WENTWORTH, NSW
« on: Sunday 23 September 12 14:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi I'm wondering wether anyone may have connections to John Egge (riverboat captain & businessman of Chinese extraction) & his wife, Mary Perring.

According to the online Australian Dictionary of Biography they had 11 children. Is any one able to help me out with the names of those children?

John Egge was a witness to my g-g-grandmother's wedding but it's the other witness named on the certificate I'm most interested in at the moment - 'Adelaide Lenord'. Is it possible Adelaide is an adult daughter of John & Mary?

Scotland / Looking for DAVID GILLESPIE, son of Robert
« on: Thursday 23 February 12 12:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has a DAVID GILLESPIE in their family tree who disappeared to Australia, anytime between the 1840s to early 1860s, but possibly earlier.

He married my g-g grandmother in 1864 in South Australia but disappeared soon after - possibly to the Victorian Goldfields. He was never seen again.

David's marriage cert lists a Robert Gillespie as his father. David's trade/occupation was listed as shoemaker. We have absolutely no other information about David except we deduce he was illiterate as he marked the cert with an X.

Family legend has it that he came from St Andrews but we have no proof of that. We'll accept all spellings of Gillespie as the name was written as it sounded, "Gellesbuy", on the marriage cert.

Thank you, Earlybird

Lovers & followers of Australian Rugby League history, are you able to help identify someone in a photo (includes Aust players) taken circa 1911/1912 during a trip to the UK?

Check out the Post Kangaroos in Hull! on the Yorkshire (East Riding & York) board.  EB

Scotland / CLOSED - AUSTRALIAN sweetheart -soldier from WW1
« on: Sunday 03 April 11 08:15 BST (UK)  »
I know I'm looking for a needle in a haystack, but...has anyone's mother, grandmother or -g-grandmother spoken about corresponding with and receiving visits from an Australian soldier, Private Clive GILLESPIE while he was on leave during WW1?
He's my grandfather and apparently while on leave in England in 1917 and 1918 he visited a young girl (woman), possibly Scottish. His intention was to marry her. Family folklore has it that he was visiting family but that was not the case.
In his diary he indicates he went to Glasgow in early Sept. 1918 which makes me wonder if the girl was Scottish. On both visits he also travels to London & Bristol but we have no details as to whom he met or what he was doing there.

Maybe the girl was a nurse? Clive travelled to the Norwich Military Hospital to collect his brother's belonging in 1916 after his brother's death. I really don't expect to find out anything but now the facts (well, the very limited info) have come out I'm intrigued as to whom this young lady might be? Clive was approx 19-20 years of age when the war ended (he put his age up when enlisting).                              Earlybird

Are you able to help me on this one?

Thomas Henry GILLESPIE died in 1915 at Cummins, South Australia in a railway shunting accident.

I need to know if any parents are listed on Thomas Henry GILLESPIE's death certificate, particularly his mother? Is his mother listed in the next of kin or as a dependant?

Thank you, Earlybird.

Frank GILLESPIE born in South Aust 1895. I need to confirm his exact birthplace. Was it Petersburgh (now Peterborough); Yongala or Warnertown? Would you also be able to supply his exact birthdate/month?
Frank's parents were Thomas Henry GILLESPIE and Amelia GILLESPIE.

Thank you in anticipation. Earlybird.
