World War Two / Albert Thomas Pegler - A Chindit in Burma
« on: Sunday 03 November 13 13:23 GMT (UK)  »
I want to learn something about my father's time as a Chindit in Burma. Albert Thomas Pegler (b. Bethnal Green 1922) was in Burma with Brig. Michael Calvert in 1944, recording some of his experiences in a diary, brief snippets when he was able. Billeted in Blackpool before leaving the UK, he returned there in 1946 and married my mother. I have never been able to find his war service record, although I have been able to access my grandfather's (Alfred Richard Pegler, b. Northampton 1988) WW1 service record during free access allowed by Ancestry in the few days around Anzac Day.
My mother's father, Harold Percy Poxon, (b. Derby 18960 served at Gallipoli in 1915, and likewise, I have never been able to access his war service records. I would be very grateful for any info on the wartime exploits of Albert Thomas Pegler, and Harold Percy Poxon.

Australia / Thomas William Welsh
« on: Sunday 03 November 13 03:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone. It's the first time I've visited Rootschat for some time. Could someone please help us find evidence of Thomas William Welsh (b. 1865 Northern Ireland) emigrating to Victoria, Australia, and/or evidence of occupation or place of residence in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. His wife, Isabella Allan Welsh, and children William Bruce (b. Peshawar, India 1895), Robert Allan (b. 1905 Ayr, Scotland), May Motgomery (b. 1908 Ayr, Scotland), John Moore (b.1913 Whitletts, Ayr, Scotland) and Elizabeth Montgomery Welsh, (b. unknown) all came to Australia at various times, although we can find no record of Thomas, May or Elizabeth's arrivals. We believe that Thomas William Welsh may have been in the military, partly because William Bruce Welsh was born in Peshawar, India. We can find no evidence of Thomas William's miltary service record, although William Bruce Welsh's military serivce record exists on the National Archives of Australia. The Welsh family can be found on the 1901 census, living in Midlothian, and Isabella (Rollo/Rolley) can be found on the 1891 census, working as a domestic servant in the home of Henry James Montgomery, who lived at Chesnut Square, Wellesbourne, Warwickshire. Isabella came to Australia with her son, John Moore Welsh (aged 14) in 1927, and Robert Allan Welsh came to Australia in 1929. William Bruce Welsh came to Australia in 1913.

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Emigrating from Ayr in Scotland to Australia
« on: Sunday 03 November 13 02:40 GMT (UK)  »
We are looking for information regarding Thomas William Welsh, who came to Australia, but not at the same time as other members of his family. His wife, Isabella Allan Welsh, came to Australia in 1927 with her 14 year old son, John Moore. She gave an address in Ayr, Scotland, her age as 57 and recorded her occupation as 'Grocer.' Robert Allan Welsh (roughly 24 years of age at the time) came to Australia in 1929 from Ayr. There were many, much older children, probably settled in Ayr. At least two other children came to Australia, May Montgomery Welsh, who married Albert Melrose Treloar in Narandara, NSW, in 1936. Another child, Elizabeth Montgomery Welsh, also came to Australia. We can find no record of Thomas William/May or Elizabeth Welsh arriving in Australia. It is possible Thomas was in Military service, as the second oldest child, William Bruce Welsh, was born in Peshawar in India in 1895. William Bruce came to Australia in 1913, served in the 1914-18 war, and died here in 1959. Could anyone help us find Thomas William Welsh. The family can be found in 1901, living in Midlothian. Before marriage Isabella (nee Rollo/Rolley b. Dreghorn 1870) worked as a domestic servant in the home of Henry James Montgomery at Chestnus Square, Wellesbourne, Warwickshire. She can be found on the 1891 census. Isabella Allan Rolley Welsh died in Lalor in 1954 as is buried in Geelong East cemetery.

England / Abraham Pegler
« on: Sunday 11 July 10 08:04 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please help me find out more about Abraham Pegler?
He is named as the father of Henry Pegler on Henry's marriage to Hannah Batt in Bristol in 1869. The witnesses are Albert E. Bowden and Edward Gover (? a little unclear).
I have found an Abraham Pegler, born 1799, mother Mary Pegler, (no father named) and a marriage in 1852 (five years after Henry was born, perhaps a second marriage). I also found a death registration in 1872, giving his age at 82. However, I don't know if these records all relate to the same person, as I don't have access to any census records other than the freeBmd, and he doesn't appear there.

Cheers

Essex / Where did the Peglers come from
« on: Tuesday 30 March 10 02:28 BST (UK)  »
I was born in Romford and now live in Australia. My grandparents, Alfred Pegler and Polly Keen, were married at Bethnal Green in the September quarter in 1911.

The families of Alfred and Polly (perhaps born Mary Ann, or Mary Sabina) are a mystery. The marriage produced eight children, the majority born at Bethnal Green, and the family eventually settled in Dagenham.

I am currently waiting for their marriage certificate to arrive, but if Polly didn't give the right name, or the right age (she apparently didn't have parental permission) then how can I find her birth certificate, or Alfred's (who supposedly lied about his age, too)?

What I mean is, when I start looking for their birth certificates, how can I be certain, from the marriage certificate, that I have the right people?

There's still time to sign the petition against certificate increases. Web address below.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Pegler/Keen
« on: Thursday 25 March 10 03:45 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested in the Pegler/Keen families. Alfred Pegler married Polly Keen at Bethnal Green, in the September quarter of 1911. They had eight children, Lily, Alfred Richard, Harry J., James Frederick, Albert Thomas (my father) John T. (known as Jack) Charlies E. and Doris. I would like to know more about Polly (apparently a nickname) and the Keen family, and to learn more about Alfred Pegler, his parents and family. Can anyone help?
