Pembrokeshire Lookup Requests / Haverfordwest lookup please - Bowen
« on: Monday 07 July 08 22:54 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother Fanny Maria Bowen gives her birthplace as Haverfordwest on the 1891 census.  She married Thomas Noble in 1878 in Kent, and gave her father's name as Isaac Bowen, Farmer.

I've been unable to find any online entries - I have Ancestry, so have searched the census - that will confirm this.  Does anyone have any ideas where else I can search?  or access to Haverfordwest records?

I'd be grateful for any help - I'm based in London!  Thanks

JB

Perthshire / 1861/1871 Census Perth SIME
« on: Thursday 21 April 05 03:02 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for Joseph Sime on the 1861 and 1871 census for Perth.  He would have been about 30 years old son of Joseph Sime Prison Warder (who lived at 89 South Street).  Joseph (the younger) was a Mariner in London in 1881, but I can't find any trace of him in Perth so far.
Can anyone help please?
Thanks

« on: Monday 28 March 05 09:01 BST (UK)  »
2nd attempt - I attached my first ever message to someone else's post!
Modified on 29th March!
I've discovered today from Perth & Kinross Council Archive that in "local Directories, c 1855 - 1875 Joseph Sime, Warder, lived at 89 South Street, Perth".  Could someone please look for him in the 1861 & 71 census?  His son Joseph Sime, was born c1850.  His wife's name might be Catharine.  I'd be grateful for any help you can give.  Thanks JB

Devon / Boyce Plymouth - in despair!
« on: Thursday 24 March 05 20:58 GMT (UK)  »
I just want to pick some brains as I've run out of ideas!

I've traced back through census, marriage and birth records, starting with James William Boyce b 1882.  His father is given as Salem Charles Boyce.  The 1881 census gives his place of birth as Plymouth Devon.  The marriage certificate of Salem Charles Boyce on 29 July 1872 (in Pill, nr Bristol) to Eliza Jane Paines gives his father's name as William.  The 1871 census in Pill gives his name as Charles Boyce (and they entered it twice!!).    Salem Charles is also recorded as Charles, Bricklayer in the Father details on his son Amos Boyce's Wedding Certificate, and as John Charles, Labourer on 1881 Census.  And interestingly I thought, until it was corrected, as Salome in the transcript of the 1901 census! - but born in Cornwall.

Looking at the Plymouth births for Boyce around 1840 only gives me Charles Samuel Boyce, father's name William.

I've found a marriage for William Boyce with Sarah Andrews in St Charles the Martyr, Plymouth in 1835 (I'm going on my memory for the marriage date).

Looking up the baptism record of Charles Samuel Boyce born in 1840 shows me that  he was baptised in the Salem Street Methodist Church in Plymouth, and the family lived in Salem Street.

I think he just forgot his first name, and then "remembered" the Salem part, rather than Samuel.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to decide once and for all, or should I give up?  An additional problem now seems to be that I can't even find any more details on his parents William or Sarah Boyce!

A real dead end (or beginning)

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Stokes Nash Hanbury Birth/baptisms
« on: Sunday 20 March 05 07:42 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace my gt....grandparents from Hanbury in Worcester.
Thomas Stokes Nash was born in 1811 baptised 7th April 1811 (and was referred to as "the illegitimate son of Margaret Nash" but I can't find my note now).
Thomas Stokes Nash married Frances Davis in St Peters Church Worcester in April 1833, but their children (except for Frances Margaret Nash, born 1833) George, b 1838, Eliza  b 1840 and Emily  b 1843 all had the surname Stokes.  At some point, Thomas also started using the surname Stokes.
Does anyone have any time to look further back on parish records for Margaret Nash (I've been confused by the records on the IGI), or have any idea on how I can make sense of these name changes?
To make matters worse, George Stokes and his younger 3 children changed THEIR name to Selwyn between 1881 (Worcester) and 1891 (Bedford)!
Thanks JB

Pembrokeshire Lookup Requests / Haverfordwest - BOWEN
« on: Sunday 20 March 05 00:46 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for Fanny Maria Bowen, born about 1850 in Haverfordwest, daughter of Isaac Bowen.  She was living in Kensington in London by 1878, but if someone could look up the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census entries, I'd be grateful.

I can't find any trace of her birth - the only one was in the workhouse, with no details of father.  I'm assuming (and probably naively) that as she quoted her father's name at her wedding, he did exist!

Thanks

Perthshire / Census lookup Perth
« on: Saturday 19 March 05 22:50 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help please with a census lookup in Perth, Scotland, for Joseph Sime, possibly with a son Joseph Sime, born 1850.
Joseph Sime senior was possibly a warder at Perth Prison, so it could be that he lived in the prison.  Son Joseph was married in Poplar in London in 1881, but he's not on the Poplar census as far as I can see for either 1881 or 1891, so he might have been back in Scotland at that time.
I'd be grateful for any help!
Thanks

« on: Monday 07 March 05 22:15 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where I'd find information on Perth Jail and the warders?

Apparently my friend's gt gt grandfather worked there - and I'd like to know whether there are any records!
