Dear Rootschatters

There is a J Macarthy aged 28, born Ireland, status 'employee' female servant, living in St James' Westminster coming up on both the Family Search 1851 census records and GenesReunited for 1851. I am a subscriber to ancestry.co.uk and I cannot find the same matching record for this person. Please could somebody kindly have a look at the record for me?
Context: I am wondering (hoping) this is Johanna McCarthy, born 1823 Ireland, who moved to England with her son William McCarthy born c.1846 Ireland. I haven't been able to find her - Johanna - in 1851/1861/ 1871 although she pops up in 1881 aged 58 living with her son William's family in Little Windmill St, St James' Westminster. So, I am really hoping this 'J Macarthy, servant' could be her in 1851. Although not sure where her son William is - he'd only be about 5 years old and I can't find him on the census until 1871 aged 25 (although I have details of his marriage to Ann Barker in 1867). Johanna's 'husband' and father of William is a 'Charles McCarthy, Tailor' (so it says on William's marriage certificate), but he is proving equally elusive. Anyway, first things first. Is this 1851 J Macarthy my Johanna McCarthy? Many thanks for any help you can give me.

Dear Rootschatters

I have already had some 'chatting' about the Titus family last year - namely John Titus and Dorcas' daughter Ann Titus (my great great great grandmother) but I have found out a bit more about John above - my GGGG grandfather who was born in Maidstone Kent in 1753 and apprenticed to a dyer in the City of London, Rachael Wilkins, in 1768. He operated as a dyer in Northampton Street area of Clerkenwell from about 1776 - 1800. He died in 1820 and is buried in Bunhill Fields Burial Ground aged 67 (much of this information is from Rootschatters so many thanks!). His father seems to be a John Titus, Grocer from Maidstone Kent (1727-1795). John Titus the dyer married Dorcas Redpath on 29th April 1781, St Mary the Virgin, Albermanbury, London. Presumably John was now firmly established in the City of London as a dyer after his apprenticeship. They seemed to have three children only: Sarah (1786), Ann (my direct ancestor in 1791) and John in 1793. I can't find any more children, which means there was quite a gap between their marriage and firstborn - which is unusual.

I really just want to know if anyone is looking up the Titus family of Maidstone and/ or has any more information on Dorcas Redpath. She has got a really unusual name but I can't find anything about her ancestry before her marriage to John Titus in London.

So, if anyone has an interest in this subject, or information which may flesh the information I have got out a bit, please post a reply.

Many thanks.

Devon Lookup Requests / John Drew & Eliza Isaac marriage 1839 East Stonehouse
« on: Friday 19 October 12 16:37 BST (UK)  »
Dear Rootshchatters

I've been trying to find a marriage for John Drew and Eliza Isaac (I have posted info about these two on the Dorset look-up board, as John Drew was born in Cattistock). Rootshchatters on the Dorset board are pretty sure they married but can't find a 'date'.

I have tried BMD index and there is a John Drew marrying in East Stonehouse Devon in the Oct period 1839. There is also an Eliza Isaac marrying in East Stonehouse Devon in the Oct period 1839. But they are not 'linking up' on the BMD index, as the page numbers seem to be different (although these are typed copies, not the originals).

On ancestry.com there are details for both John Drew and Eliza Isaac listed separately, marrying in East Stonehouse in 1839 Oct period. Could someone please click into the detail and see if they were actually marrying each other?! I really hope they are as that would solve a lot of my problems!

I know an Eliza Isaac and a John Drew had a child Edwin Drew in Bath in 1842 as they are listed in the Bath BMD index (knowledge gained from very helpful Rootschatters) so, this date of 1839 would 'fit' well.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi Rootschatters

I am trying to find out more about John Drew(e) and his parents and siblings. He was born 'at sea' and christened on Jan 6 1805 in Cattistock. I think his parents are John Drew(e) and Dorothy Hunt who were married in Cattistock on 30 April 1804 (from the Family Search website... may be correct, not sure).

I'd love to know if I have his parents correctly named, any other children they had, what John's father did for a living and any info about his mother (if she is Dorothy Hunt, I can't find anything about her).
Also, why was John Drew actually 'born at sea' - (he proudly states this on various census entries). What was his mother doing 'at sea' exactly?

I know quite a lot about his subsequent life. He marries Eliza and moves to Whitechapel and is an 'excavator', dying in 1874 in Whitechapel, but I want to find out about his early life and his parentage.

Many thanks for any help or advice.

Dear Rootschatters

I am trying to find John and Eliza Drew and their family.

John Drew b.c. 1804, born 'at sea' or 'Cattistock' (where he was christened I think)
Eliza Drew b.c. 1814, born Badminton, Gloucestershire (mis-spelt at various times as Badminster, Bedminster....). Although not born in Middlesex, they seemed to spend most of their adult life in Mile End New Town (which I'll call MENT), Whitechapel.

Would some kind soul be able to find them in 1841 (I'm not sure if they are living in Mile End New Town at that time) and let me know the details on the census, including the names and ages and places of birth of any children?

Also in 1861 - when they are definitely in living in MENT aged 47 and 57, but I don't have access to click into the census and find out their occupations and the names, ages and occupations of their children.

By 1881 John seems to have died and Eliza seems to have changed her name to Edwards, although I cannot find any record of her 'Eliza Drew' marrying anyone called 'Edwards'. She seems to be living with a 'Manistrin'  Drew (I think this could be a typo too) and several grandchildren in MENT.

By 1891 an Eliza Edwards aged 90, born Badminton, is a pauper in an institution in St George in the East - I think this must be her.

Many thanks for your help.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Liverpool parish records - William BROOKES or BROOKS
« on: Wednesday 01 August 12 15:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters

I am trying to find out more about the origins of my great great great grandfather William Brooks or Brookes (it is spelt both ways on various census, marriage records etc.).
He was born in Liverpool around 1815-17. He was married to Mary Shaw, nee Bailey, a widow in 1839 in Wooden Box, Hartshorne, Derbyshire (now called Woodville). They had a child, my great great grandfather William Brooks, in 1841. Mary died in 1843. William remarried - to Ann Fletcher in 1844 in Wooden Box and they went on to have six children.
In the 1841 census William Brooks is down as an 'earthernware m' (maker?) eg. a potter, born out of county, living in Hartshorne.
In 1851 he's down as William BrookEs, living in New St, Woodville and is a potter.
In 1861 he's down as William BrookEs, living in the wonderfully named California Row in Woodville, aged 44 and a potter.
He died of 'ramolissement cerebri' on 13th February in 1869 aged 52 in Church Gresley, Burton Upon Trent, Derby.
Most of his adult life seems to be in Derby, but he was born in Liverpool, Lancs, hence posting here.
So I know quite a lot about his life post 1837 but I don't know who his parents were or where in Liverpool he was born. I wonder if his father was a potter.
Why did he move to Woodville?

Any help with this would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

Dear Rootschatters

I am trying to find out more about my GGG granddad Charles Ninnim. It is an unusual surname but there seem to be quite a lot of Ninnim's around Pompey and Portsea Island. It could be derived from Nineham.....?

From info on Family Search (not sure how accurate this is) he seems to have been born in 1805 in Portsmouth to parents Ann Crook and George Ninnim (but I don't know any more about them and this is all info from Family Search so may not be correct). He had an elder brother George born in 1802 in Portsmouth (again, from Family Search). They were both christened at St Thomas' Portsmouth. I don't know if there were other siblings.

Charles Ninnim married Mary from Wymering Hants (don't know her family name) and I'm not sure when - but I think their first child (who appears on the 1841 census) is Mary born in 1829 in Fareham. So they must have been married around that time and probably in Hampshire as they don't seem to stray far. Charles is a 'Labourer' on the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

Can anyone find Charles and Mary's marriage details for me? They seemed to have a number of children, Mary (1829 Fareham), Ann (c. 1831), Charles (c. 1833), my Great Great Grandmother Emma Ninnim in 1839 in Havant and Eliza (1841, Havant).

I think Charles dies in 1859 and Mary in 1861.

I'm also interested generally in anyone else looking for Ninnim's in Portsmouth.

Many thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Dear Rootschatters

I am doing some research for my friend Andrew and I'd like to check his father's birth certificate. His father was called Derrick White but his birth certificate on the BMD index seems to have him down as Derrick FW (we think one of those could be Francis) SCOLLAY. It seems he is illegitimate.
Would anyone be able to check the record? (I'm not sure if this is possible without purchasing the record so it may not be possible.)

We are very interested to see who is down as his father. His father is a bit of a mystery at the moment as he seems to have changed his birth name and I'd love to be able to pin him down from this record! Derrick's mother should be Mabel Edith Scollay (she didn't marry this mystery man 'Mr White' until 1934 after her first husband, Mr Scollay, died). Any other info on the record would be gratefully received, occupation of father, place of birth.

The index is Derrick FW Scollay, birth 1921, Islington, Sept 1b 365.

Many thanks for this if anyone can help.

Dear Rootschatters

Folllowing on from the very useful information you provided about my GG grandfather John Titus LLOYD I wondered if I could ask for a look-up on his father Thomas Lloyd (later a silversmith) who I am now pretty sure was born in Chester. There is a Thomas Lloyd born in Chester in 1786 (about the right time for someone who marries in 1810) and he was christened at the Holy Trinity Church, Chester (according to brief information on the Family Search website). This is the same church as John Titus Lloyd was christened in in 1815. I feel pretty sure this cannot just be coincidence!
Also, in the census for 1851/ 61 and 71 there is a note of a Thomas Lloyd born around 1786/7/8/9, living in Kentish Town area but born in Chester. I think this must be him.... but I can't confirm as yet. That would make him pretty ancient I admit by 1871, but several family members seem to have had a good innings, so not impossible!

Many thanks for your help.
