Yorkshire (West Riding) / Birth parents of Thomas Henry Hall b. 5 Apr 1824
« on: Sunday 01 July 12 13:03 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to determine the exact names and details about the parents of Thomas Henry Hall who was born on 5 April 1824 in Leeds and hopefully earlier generations. I note from some records that his parents were William and Mary Hall, but there are more than one couple with these christian names. I would like to get some steer on how to determine his mother's maiden name and the birth details of both of his parents and hopefully earlier generations, and once I have these, whether he had siblings. If someone could assist me with where to go for records that could help me determine this, it would be most welcomed. On Thomas' baptism certificate it states that his father was a Wool Stapler. My guess at this stage is that quite possibly both his parents were from Leeds too, but that is a guess.

Many thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Bradford Textile Mills - 19th Century
« on: Friday 12 August 11 17:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am keen to locate photos of the working conditions and people from the textile mills during the 19th century. Of particular interest if they exist would be photos or material about Legrams Mill as I suspect my family would have worked there given they lived in Legrams Lane.

If anyone can help or give me a steer in the right direction that would be most appreciated.

Thanks
Bill

New Zealand Completed Requests / Tracing arrival into New Zealand - 1909
« on: Monday 27 June 11 19:41 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the arrival of Lilian Callaghan and Frederick Charles Hall into New Zealand around 2nd or 3rd quarter of 1909. Lilian hails from Adelaide and I assume that is where they embarked. They settled on the West Coast but may have landed either in Wellington or the South Island. Have had no luck and would appreciate help or guidance.

Many thanks

South Africa / George Morgan in Cape Town
« on: Friday 25 February 11 22:25 GMT (UK)  »
Am searching for George Morgan (born 1902 in Bradford UK), emigrated to NZ with all his family around 1920 and left for South Africa around 1930. Married Florence (unknown surname) and had two children (one boy and one girl) we believe in Cape Town, possibly Durban. Not sure if there are Census records up to early 1960s when I believe he passed away. A lost arm of the family that I would very much like to trace.

If anyone can point me in the direction of how I can search SA records, that would be most appreciated.

Kind regards
Bill

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Bradford Woollen Mills 1840-1910
« on: Tuesday 18 January 11 22:37 GMT (UK)  »
I am very keen to learn a lot more about the life and times in Bradford and its woollen mills, spanning the period mid-19th century to early 20th century. My family predominantly worked in these mills and migrated away from them. I would like to get a feel for what their life was like and what possibly drove them away.

Would appreciate any recommendations on books about the times and any photographic evidence out there.

Many thanks

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Eliza Milner b. 1829 in Armley near Leeds
« on: Sunday 02 January 11 18:36 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to establish the name of the above's mother (surname) to continue tracing back my family. Eliza, my great-great grandmother was born to William Milner and wife Hannah - surname unknown in 1829. She later married Thomas Henry Hall in 1853 in Bradford and died in 1902 in Chorlton, Lancashire. I have the marriage certificate for Eliza and Thomas which gives her father's christian name, but am struggling to establish how to trace back beyond 1837 which is the earliest year for BDM records on the standard searches, for her birth record which I would assume states her mother's maiden name.

If anyone could give me pointers it would be much appreciated.

Regards
Bill

Lancashire / Hall & Margetts
« on: Wednesday 29 December 10 21:37 GMT (UK)  »
Frederick William Hall (born 1867) is the brother of my great grandfather (Charles Henry Hall) who emigrated to NZ around 1880. I have letters from Frederick dated 1894 when he was single and living in Chorlton, Lancashire. He later married Edith Mary Margetts in Reading, Berkshire around 1903 and later lived in Southport, Lancashire. Not sure if anyone else out there is researching this arm of the Hall family. Don't have his death details or those of his wife, but they did have one son John Milner Hall who was born in 1906 and died in 1937. The Milner surname has continued to be passed down through the generations.

Anyway, would love to hear from anyone who may have these people in their family trees.

Cheers
Bill

The Common Room / Bradford Mills
« on: Friday 09 July 10 17:12 BST (UK)  »
I have a number of relatives on my maternal side who all performed various roles in the Bradford Mills, ranging from Alpacca Sorter to various types of weavers. Like many, entire families assumed varying roles spanning the 1860 - 1900 period.

I was wondering whether anyone could advise if there is any way of identifying which mills they worked in. Are there lists of employees that can be interrogated for example?

Direction appreciated.

Many thanks

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Spillards of London
« on: Saturday 01 May 10 09:26 BST (UK)  »
There are a number of births and deaths of Spillards that I believe are my relatives, that I am just stumped in being sure who was related to who and how. There is also a burial which I believe is probably an ancestor but equally not sure.

I am in the process of writing a story about my great great grandfather, Andrew Spillard (b. 1815 - son of Andrew; grandson of Andrew), who emigrated to NZ in 1851. What I do know is that he was married twice before setting off. The first to Mary Waltho in Feb 1844 who appears to have passed away, I believe probably in childbirth. The second to Elizabeth Tilling in Dec. 1849, who accompanied him to start life in NZ.

If anyone can help me confirm which child belonged to which set of parents that would be wonderful - if indeed it was to either set. And there are a few deaths I can not be sure of. There may be others out there with Spillard information. A summary of the births, deaths and burial information is below:

Births

Mary Ann Spillard b. Apr-Jun 1844 - Chelsea, London
female Spillard b. Apr-Jun 1845 - Chelsea
Charles Andrew Spillard - Apr-Jun 1846, Chelsea
Mary Elizabeth Spillard b. Dec 1850, Marylebone

Deaths:
John Spillard d. Mar 1839- Holborn
Female Spillard d. Jun 1845, Chelsea
Mary Ann Spillard d. Jun 1845, Chelsea
Charles Andrew Spillard, d.Sept 1846, Chelsea
Mary Spillard, d.1846 - Chelsea
Mary Elizabeth, 30 Jan 1851, Marylebone

Burial:
Anddrew Spillard d. 24 Apr 1828, aged 73, Hanover Square

Many thanks if anyone can help
Bill
