Scotland / Help with a mystery photo
« on: Wednesday 28 September 22 21:08 BST (UK)  »
Good evening,

I am wondering if any good photo detectives can help me to extract some clues from these mystery photos.
I don't know who these people are, how they might be related or otherwise.  I don't know if they are dressed up or in normal day to day gear.
 I don't know what timeframe it's from.

BUT I do believe it was taken at a wee Croft in Sutherland, where the occupants were of Aberdeenshire/Banffshire origin.

Neither photo has anything on the back, and both are about maybe 3 inches in height.

I would love to know what you clever folks can deduce from this photo, no matter how small it could help in identifying or narrowing down who these folks might be.

Thank you for reading.

Armed Forces / 1st Kings Dragoon Guards pre-Crimea
« on: Sunday 30 August 20 19:57 BST (UK)  »
Good evening,

I am trying to ascertain where the 1st Kings Dragoon Guards might have been billeted in the early-1850s.

1815                   Waterloo
1851                 Dublin
1852 ???
1853 ???
1854/1855   Crimean War
1855                   Sebastapol
1857 - 1860   Second Chinese War

Does anyone know how I could ascertain this information?  I am wondering if they could have been stationed in Edinburgh at some point

Thank you,

A

US Lookup Requests / William McGhee, Scotland to ????
« on: Wednesday 06 September 17 10:15 BST (UK)  »
Trying to trace William McGhee who according to family lore, flitted to America/Canada and left his wife and young children behind in Scotland.

He was born in 1868 in Port Glasgow to parents Patrick McGhee and Margaret Reilly.

William married Mary Fitzgerald and had three children (that I know of) and last we know of him is his appearance with his family in the 1901 census at Adelaide St in Inverkip, Gourock, Scotland.

He was a seaman/ships plater to trade.

Has anyone got Any thoughts on how we might find a death certificate, and see what really happened to him?

Regards,

A

World War Two / Anonymous Photo.....Seaman?
« on: Monday 10 November 14 07:52 GMT (UK)  »
I'm afraid I know absolutely nothing about this photo...other than we think it belonged to my grandmother in Sutherland, Scotland.  Is this a uniform that anyone recognises?  I suspect, from the anchor, that he had a profession to do wit boats/the sea.  ??? (Navy?)

Inverness / Lookup Request - Inverness-shire
« on: Tuesday 09 September 14 20:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

Wondering if some kind soul could help me to pinpoint the census records for this chap....

  • PC Ewan Cameron was a native of Glenelg who joined the Inverness-shire Constabulary on 3/3/1883 after 18 months previous service in Glasgow City Police. After his first two years in Lochaber, the remainder of PC Cameron 's service was spent entirely within the Isle of Skye - Carbost (twice), Portree, Staffin, Colbost, Uig and Isleornsay (twice)(son born in his first stint there). Cameron  retired to Glenelg from his last posting at Isleornsay (Sleat) on 10/5/1917.

I have him in 1901, in Sleat aged 52, with wife Maggie. Kids: Kenneth, Ewen, Norman and Archibald.  His place of birth is noted as Kilmuir, Skye.

And in 1891, in Sleat aged 44, with wife Maggie. Kids: Christina, Archibald & Kenneth.  His place of birth is noted as Kilmuir, Skye.

I have been taking potluck on Scotlands People trying to pick him up in 1881 and 1871, but not picking the right ones, so wonder if someone could help narrow the search before I spend a heap more money!!

Thanks in anticipation,

Anna

Lancashire / Ashburton Road, Blackpool
« on: Saturday 11 January 14 18:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks  :)

I am seeking advice/help on how to trace a family member.  She will have passed away now, but what I'm not sure of is if she had any children.  If she did I would like to get in touch with them.

She - Mary Kerr - lived at 27 Ashburton Road, Blackpool.  Her husband Farquhar MacRae died in 1966 leaving her a widow.  A year later she remarried: a man called Charles Moore - both of whom on the marriage cert. were living at 27 Ashburton Rd.  I have been unable to find a death certificate for her (she was born about 1900)

I haven't done a lot of research into English records before so I am unsure where to go from here.  What I had thought of as a possible lead would be valuation rolls or the English equivalent?  But I don't know if she owned the house or just rented it.   ???

Any advice/assistance gratefully received.

Armed Forces / Old Military Photos
« on: Friday 10 January 14 21:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I have been wondering for a while now if there is any kind of on-line repository for old military regimental photos.

I for one have quite a few photos of unknown soldiers, and I am very conscious how much I would like to know what some of my serving army ancestors looked like.  And can't help thinking that some researchers may be looking for ancestors in the photos I happen to have, or the photos Joe Bloggs has etc.

For example, I have no idea why my family had this photo - but it may mean something to someone else....
