Does anyone have information on the Baxter family from Kent : Samuel -> Samuel (2) -> Samuel (3)/ William -> Samuel (4) -> Frederick William (emmigrated to South Africa) .
Early Samuels were land estate agents / auctioneers / historian (reporter) / farming , all in Kent .

I am trying to trace the SMITH family in Kimberley and would appreciate any information to fill in the missing bits .

ARTHUR  HOWARD  SMITH
b 14-08-1910   in Kimberley, North Eastern Cape
d _ _ 1988   in Durban, Natal 

After attending Christian Brothers College in Kimberley, Arthur matriculated at Mansfield High School in Durban,  where he met and later married on  9th November 1935  Enid Elsie (nee Palmer)

Joining up for WW2 , Arthur served in North Africa (Egypt) in the signals and communications corps .  (SADF records ????)

Returning from WW2 Arthur and Enid divorced in 1945 . 

Arthur remarried on   _ _ 1946  to May Victoria  (nee Butler)  b 31-07-1912 , 
d 27-04-1968 in Durban .

For some time with De Beers Mining Company at Kimberley, South Africa.
Died January 18th, 1936. (Harrow School Register & Wellington College Register)”

After Arthur does not appear in the UK census after 1871, so it is likely that he left England for South Africa between 1878 and 1881 after leaving Cambridge University Arthur  on (??? date)  aboard ?? ship) and finally settled in Kimberley.
 
Arthur married in Kimberley at St. Cyprians Church  on  20-05-1893   to Julia Howard (nee Jones)  b 04-12-1863   d 04-01-1946 (Durban) .
         
Arthur and Julia had seven children :

Arriving in Kimberley , Arthur joined DeBeers Diamond Mining Company on 
12th December 1889 as Clerk of the Convict Station . In September 1895 he was transferred to staff position . After thirty four years service , Arthur retired on 1st June 1923 .

He was also one of the founder members of the Kimberley Golf Club which he patroned over the years .

I am looking for information on the Baxter family . What i have so far is :

Samuel Baxter son of the 18th Century Baxter family of Samuel (Snr) and Mary Anne , residing in Plumstead and Forest Hill, Kent, married Emma
and raised two children : Mary Anne and Samuel (Jnr) and then following the death of Emma he remarried on 19th February 1857 to Mary Anne Martin and raised seven children : Frederick William, Minnie, Emily, Ada, Evelyn, George Herbert, Samuel .

Frederick William emigrated to South Africa in 1878  with his brother Samuel following in 1894 and they settled in the Eastern Cape . Frederick married Euphemia Lee Anderson in Queenstown and they raised eight children : Winifred Mary, Samuel Herbert, Frederick Anderson, Owen Claude, Emily Florence, Gladys Lee, George Roberts, Mabel Muriel .

Samuel married to Emma nee Plaistew or Plaisted  b _ _1828  d 14-11-1855 in Forest Hill , Kent .
Samuel and Emma had two children :
   Mary Ann   (b 20-12-1852  Devon ,  d _ _ 19_)
   Samuel  (b 12-02-1855  Plumstead   d _ _ 19_)

The marriage of Samuel to Emma is found in the 1851 census in Devon, the birth place of their first child Mary Ann

A second sibling of Samuel is now recorded , a younger brother Edward , born 1826 North Bray (should be North Cray)

Suggestion from the above census is that Emma’s maiden name was PLAISTEW or similar (This was not an English name) possibly PLAISTED , and that Thomas is her brother but unable to locate a BAXTER/PLAISTEW marriage or anything similar.

Information is that Emma died in 1855. and this is recorded in Norwood Cemetery and she was buried there

Information was that Samuel emigrated in 1894 (possibly 1892-1896)

I am looking for information on the Smith Family . So far this is what I have :

The Smith family of the early 18th Century lived in St. Pancras, Westminister in London . Adam and Mary Smith raised nine children of whom Charles and Caroline’s son Edmund James would achieve prominence in the business world as the founder member of the firm ‘Smith Gore’ as well as appointments to various positions by the Crown .

The fifth child of eleven born to Edmund James and Margaret Smith, Arthur Frederick Smith born 13th May 1853 received his schooling at Harrow and Wellington College and in 1872 entered Trinity College Cambridge, before moving to Downing College in 1874 . The son of renowned ‘Crown Receiver for the Northern Counties’ and ‘Surveyor to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners’ and founder partner in 1847 of ‘Smith Gore’ (property consulting and management) , Arthur Frederick however did not enter into the family business and instead emigrated to South Africa in 1880 where he settled in Kimberley .

Edmund James rose to prominence as a land surveyor and agent , and founder of the firm ‘Smith Gore’ of 16 Whitehall Place , as well as  highly respected council and committee appointments by the Crown . Residing at 14 Parliament Street Westminister .

In the Annual Register, Volume 22, of 1881, the death of Edmund James in 1880 was reported as follows:
“On 21 July Edmund James Smith, Crown Receiver for the Northern Counties, Surveyor to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, besides holding many other important posts to which he had been appointed on account of his special knowledge and capacity.
He was altogether a self-made man, having risen from humble origins.”
(The obituary for Edmund James Smith is recorded in Minutes of the Proceedings of the Institute of Civil Engineers, Volume 61, pages 303-4; also the history of the firm now known as ‘Smiths Gore’, and various census returns.)
