Westmorland / Holme(s) Oldhouse/Ould House/Old House Beck, Winster
« on: Saturday 01 October 11 14:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi, between 1793 and 1803 my 6 times great grandparents, George and Isabella Holme(s) had at least 3 children baptised at Winster.

They were Ann in 1793, Thomas in 1797 and Robert in 1803, there were earlier children baptised at Windermere and Crosthwaite, my direct ancestor, John among them.

At the baptisms in Winster George was described as being of Oldhouse Beck, Old House Beck, or Ould House Beck.

Can anyone help me to pin down exactly where this was?

Thanks in advance.

Lancashire / Holme(s) Colton/Cartmel areas
« on: Saturday 01 October 11 13:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

It all starts with a baptism of my 6 times great grandfather, a George Holme at Colton, Lancashire to Nicholas of "Cringle Myer" in 1753

I believe this Nicholas may be the same Nicholas who married an Elizabeth Strickland in 1741 at Lancaster.  I haven't been able to find any other likely baptisms to Nicholas in the areas, and it does seem like a big leap to get to George's baptism in 1753.

I have checked the BMDregisters website for any quaker baptisms (and any other possible marriages for a Nicholas Holme), but none show up.  I've also checked in the Catholic parish register societies publications for the area for any similar baptisms to a Nicholas, or marriage of a Nicholas, but again no others show up.

George Holmes (then of the parish of Cartmel) married Isabella Hellen at Windermere in 1781.  I also have both of their burials at Windermere.

Has anyone else researched this line at all?  It'd be intriguing to find out more about Nicholas, and George before he married Isabella.

I've checked the historical directories site but there don't seem to be any directories on there between the 1750s and 1781 for the right sort of area.  Are there any available?  If so would any kind person be able to look Nicholas and George up on the directories in the Colton/Cartmel sort of areas?

Also, the only possible Nicholas i've found a baptism for was at Ulverston to a James Holme in 1710.  While I have found the baptism of an Elizabeth Strickland to a Reynold Strickland at Colton in about 1720 off the top of my head.

Is anyone aware of any other possible baptisms of Nicholas?  Marriages of Nicholas?  Or burials of Nicholas in the areas?

Thanks for taking the time to read this

Lancashire Completed Lookup Requests / Cartmel baptism 1753 COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 12 October 10 08:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

If anyone has access to Cartmel baptisms from around 1753 sort of time would they be able to do a check for me for a baptism of a George Holme?

I believe there has been something published for Cartmel for this sort of time, I have seen records from Cartmel before the 1700s and again in the 1800s online, but can't find anything for Cartmel online for this sort of time.

I am leaning towards a baptism of George to a Nicholas at Colton in 1753, at his marriage it states he was of the parish of Cartmel, so I guess i'd just like to rule out other possibilities before going with the baptism at Colton.

Thanks for any assistance in advance.

Hi,

I just saw some kind person was offering to do look ups in the marriage bonds.  I have been trying to find the marriage of my ancestors George Holm(e) and Isabel(lla) (H)ellen at some time roughly between about 1777 and 1782 when their first son, my 5 times great grandfather, John Holm(e/s) was christened at Windermere to George & Isabel(lla) in July 1782.

I believe I found the christening of Isabella at Kendal via the Family search site in 1757 to John.  I haven't narrowed down which George could possibly be the right one from the many christened at around the right sort of time yet, but going off this christening for Isabella, if this is the right one (and I know her father was called John as his name's listed as the maternal grandfather one 1 or 2 of the christenings) then I presume the marriage would have taken place sometime between around 1777 and 1782.

I don't believe they married in Kendal, Isabella's father, John Hellen was listed in the 1777 window tax in the Stricklands area (I believe this was him anyway as one of the christenings to George & Isabella has him at Strickland Roger.)  So I guess the marriage could have taken place anywhere between possibly Burneside, Selside, Windermere, Heversham, Crosthwaite, or possibly Crook or Winster.

Sorry to go on a bit, thought i'd give as much information as possible.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Canada Lookup Request / Immigration/Death look up request?
« on: Friday 16 April 10 15:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I'm fairly new to these boards, so am hoping that i'm posting this in the right forum, as well as hoping that some kind person may be able to do a lookup for me.

I've been looking for the death of my 2 times great grandfather, Henry/Harry Chapman for some time now.  He was born in 1879 in Lancashire, England, married my great great grandmother in 1903 in England, my great grandmother was born in the Isle of Wight in 1905, they moved back up to Lancashire by about 1911/1912, then the family moved up to Edinburgh in Scotland in the early 20s, perhaps earlier, then I found another marriage for my two times great grandmother in 1935 in Edinburgh as a widow.

So I searched through all the possible deaths in England, Wales and Scotland, but absolutely nothing, I discovered there was a Harry Chapman listed on the 1930 US census who was born in England in about 1878 in Cook County, Illinois as a roomer.  I found a death through the Cook County clerk website of a Harry Chapman aged "about 50", which doesn't give much detail in 1938.

I have also found a Harry Chapman who arrived in Quebec, Canada from Liverpool, England on board the Montrose in 1925.  I've also found a reference to a "Hany" Chapman on the ancestry site who died in Peterborough County, Quebec 1933.

As you can see from the dates, and the remarriage of my 2 times great grandmother as a widow, the Harry Chapman who arrived in Canada in 1925 is looking an appealing option, especially if it is the same "Hany" who died in 1933.  And I hoped that someone might possibly be able to check the details for me from the record if they have a subscription to Ancestry at all?

Thanks in advance for any help.
John
