Somerset / Wilton Gaol
« on: Monday 03 June 13 10:59 BST (UK)  »
One of my ancestors was a fairly regular visitor to this establishment.
Job Skinner was sent down for 2 weeks (August  1865, assault) a month (September 1881 drunk and disorderly) 2 weeks with hard labour ( June 1888 drunk and disorderly).
Are there any records that would show his admission and discharge that may give me any more information about the old rogue? Is this too early for 'mugshots'?
I believe their is a history of the gaol but it is out of print and not available from local bookshops. does anyone have a copy or access to one?
The same individual was also listed as being in the workhouse at the time of the 1901 census. Again any further information would be greatly appreciated. Mr Skinner was a sawyer and I would also be interested to learn where he worked.
Thank you in anticipation.

Does anyone have access to records kept by the jail which offenders tried by the Taunton Police Court and Assizes were sent? My ancestors were regular residents and I wondered if records of admission, discharge were kept. Hoping there might be mugshots!

Somerset / Death by drowning Taunton
« on: Sunday 09 September 12 17:22 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor Alfred Skinner was born in Taunton in 1866, son of Job and Emily. I have been unable to trace his death. My father told me that his grandfather Alfred had been pulled out of the canal in Taunton having either committed suicide or fallen in drunk! He remembers his father going to identify the body.
Despite this being quite a colourful story I can find no trace or record. It was about 1936 but it could be a few years earlier.
Thanks in anticipation.

Somerset / Missing in 2 x census Taunton
« on: Sunday 09 September 12 17:17 BST (UK)  »
In 1881 Census Job Skinner is 47 yrs old, a sawyer living in Tainton with wife Emily and 10 of their 11 children.
By 1891 he is a vagrant and the family is dispersed except for Emily, living in East Reach Taunton with 2 younger children.
According to free BMD Job died in the July/September quarter 1913 in Taunton but I have found  no records of him in either 1901 or 1911 census ( I no longer have access to these records). Would he have been recorded if he remained a vagrant?
Help greatly appreciated.
