I am trying to find the circumstances in which my relative Sergeant (Pilot) George Arthur Gardner died by drowning in Canada on 21 May 1942 whilst in RAF service.

He was born 1923, the son of William Henry Gardner & Annie Gardner of Perry Common, Birmingham, England.  When he died he was therefore aged 19, serving in the RAF Volunteer Reserve & was, presumably, training in Canada at the time of his death.  He is buried at Weyburn (Hillcrest) Cemetery, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Interestingly, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has another casualty who died on the same date buried in the same cemetery, which the RAF Commands Forum states was also a death by drowning, so presumably a casualty of the same incident.  He was Sergeant (Pilot) Eric Pulford Fairgrieve (Service No 1138057), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, son of Mrs. E. E. Simpson, of West Kirby, Cheshire, England.

I understand that the incident may have been a result of a boating accident, rather than a flying incident.  Although they are buried at Weyburn, I don’t know where their deaths occurred.

Is anyone able to provide me with any further information please, either about the circumstances of the incident itself (eg where it occurred, what happened, were there any other casualties or survivors) or about George’s service (eg unit he was with, where located).  Maybe there was a press report in a local newspaper at the time?

Any help greatly appreciated.

I am trying to find where James Robert Srawley, his wife Louisa Elizabeth Srawley (nee Yarnall) & their family were living after 1939.  The Registration Districts in which James’ & Louisa’s deaths were registered seems to point to them having moved out of Birmingham to Warwickshire (see below).

I have the following information:
* James Robert Srawley was born c1878 in Birmingham, son of Henry Charles Srawley & Harriett Srawley (nee Lymath) & died c1964 (registered 1964 Q1, Alcester).
* Louisa Elizabeth Srawley (nee Yarnall) was born c1873 in Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales & died in 1955 (registered 1955 Q2, Warwick).
* They married in 1900 (registered 1900 Q3, Aston (Birmingham)) & lived in Birmingham until at least 1939 (from The 1939 Register on FindMyPast).
* They had at least eight children between 1901 & 1917:
     * Lilian born 1901, who married Herbert Walter Thomas Savage in 1932 in Yardley, Birmingham.
     * Phylis born c1904
     * Dorothy born c1906
     * James E born c1908
     * Sidney G born c1910
     * Dora S born 1912, who married William T Embrey in 1941 & had at least two children, John T & Philip C.
     * Marjorie H born c1915, who married Michael J Moore in 1940 & had at least two children, Michael F & Eileen.
     *Arthur J, who I believe was born 1917 & died as an infant in 1918.

I lose track of the family after 1939, until the death of Louisa Elizabeth Srawley in 1955 registered in Warwick Registration District, followed nine years later by the death of James Robert Srawley registered 1964 in Alcester Registration District.  Presumably James & Louisa were living in the Warwick area for a while & I wonder whether  James then moved to live with family after wife Louisa died (as his death was registered in Alcester Registration District rather than Warwick).

The name "Srawley" variously appears as Scrawley, Shrawley, Sprawley, Strawley, Trawley, Srewley.

Any help greatly appreciated.

« on: Monday 18 January 16 22:33 GMT (UK)  »
I’m researching a Srawley family of Birmingham, who are related to me, & would be pleased to hear from anyone who knows about them, or may be related to them.

The first family below lived in Old Inkleys & the Deritend area of Birmingham, & some were lamp makers:
* James Srawley, b c 1813 Birmingham.
* Mary Srawley (nee Coleman?), wife, b c 1812 Birmingham.
* William Srawley, son, b c 1834 Birmingham.
* Mary Ann Srawley, daughter, b c 1838 Birmingham.
* James Srawley, son, b c 1839 Birmingham.
* Elizabeth Srawley, daughter, b c 1841 Warwickshire.
* Charles H Srawley, son, b c 1843 Birmingham.
* Thomas Samuel Srawley, son, b 1844 Birmingham.
* Henry Charles Srawley, son, b 1846, Birmingham (see below).
* Samuel C Srawley, son, b c 1855 Birmingham.

The next generation (below) generally lived in the Bordesley & Small Heath areas of Birmingham:
* Henry Charles Srawley, b 1846 Birmingham, married Harriet Lymath 1873.
* Harriett Srawley (nee Lymath), wife, b 1849 Birmingham.
* Harry Srawley, son, b c 1874 Birmingham, d 1953.  Married Maud Caroline Molcher  1897.
* Harriett Lymath Srawley, daughter, b c 1877 Birmingham, d 1896.
* James R Srawley, son, b c 1878 Birmingham.
*William E Srawley, son, b c 1884 Birmingham.
*Samuel G Srawley, son, b c 1885 Birmingham.
*John Clark “Bright” Srawley, son, b 1887 Birmingham, d 1975.  Married Florrie Sadkie 1931.

Hope someone can help.

Northamptonshire / Srawley, Molcher & Read Families of Roade, Northamptonshire
« on: Wednesday 30 December 15 19:54 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather had a brother named Harry Srawley, who lived in the village of Roade in Northamptonshire in the 1940’s, until his death there in 1953 aged 79, following a road accident.

He was married in 1897 in Birmingham to Maud Caroline Molcher, who was born in Rugby in about 1873, & who lived in Roade during her childhood (parents John & Jane Molcher, siblings Edith, Nelson & Eli Molcher), until she married Harry.  After living in Birmingham for about 40 years, it seems Harry & Maud moved to Roade in the early 1940’s.  She died in 1951 aged 78 (registered in Brixworth, so presumably living in Roade at the time).

They had a daughter Edith Hattie Maud Srawley, born about 1897 in Birmingham, who I think married a Herbert T Read in 1943 (registered in Brixworth, so maybe married in Roade).  Edith appears to have died in 1946 (also registered in Brixworth, so presumably living in Roade at the time of her death).

In 1948, Harry (& presumably wife Maud) were living at Church View Cottage in Roade (according to an auction notice in the Northampton Mercury, 16 Jul 1948, in which it was described as stone built & thatched with four bedrooms & large gardens front & rear).  When he died in 1953, he was living at 9 The Leys.

If anyone can help:
* Does anybody know if Church View Cottage still exists?  If so, whereabouts in Roade is it situated?
* Does anyone have a photograph of it, or the road in which it is situated, either now or in the 1940’s?
* Does anyone know anything about Harry Srawley or the Molchers, especially his wife Maud & her family, or daughter Edith Srawley or son-in-law Herbert Read?
* Does anyone know if Harry Srawley, wife Maud or daughter Edith (Read) were buried in Roade &, if so, where & whether any graves exist?

Any help greatly appreciated.

I would be grateful if anyone could help please with parish register baptism & burial lookups for the Garner family (sometimes appearing as Gardner) from Thurlaston.

William Garner      Head   Born c1806, Willenhall, Warwickshire   Carpenter
Rebecca Garner      Wife   Born c1806, Warwickshire
Elizabeth Garner      Daur   Born c1831
Mary Ann Garner      Daur   Born c1833, Warwickshire
William Thomas GarnerSon   Born c1834, Warwickshire
Jobe/Jope Garner   Son   Born c1836, Warwickshire

James Garner      Son   Born c1840, Thurlaston, Warwickshire
John Garner      Son   Born c1843, Thurlaston, Warwickshire
Hannah Garner      Daur   Born c1846, Thurlaston, Warwickshire

There is a marriage of a William Gardner to a Rebecca Riley on 14 Jun 1830 at St Philip, B’ham (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NJHY-NBS), which could be the correct marriage.

It would be helpful if someone could give me the following information from the relevant parish registers:
* Date & parish of ceremony
* Date of birth/death
* Full names, including parents names & occupations if available
* Place of abode

The events I’ve found so far are:
* 19 Jun 1831   Christening of Elizabeth Garner at Dunchurch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NY5G-C5S)
* 20 Jun 1833   Christening of Mary Ann Garner at Thurlaston (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NP96-VPJ)
* 20 Apr 1834   Christening of William Thomas Garner at Dunchurch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NP96-882)
* 06 Dec 1840   Christening of James Garner at Dunchurch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JQTP-VZ6)
* 30 Nov 1848   Burial of Rebecca Garner at Daventry (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XXKX-XNB)
* 17 Nov 1851   Burial of William Garner at Dunchurch, aged 45 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NP1G-4PF)

If anyone can find any christenings of the other children, that would also be helpful.

Thanks in anticipation.

Northamptonshire / GARDNER Family of Northamptonshire & Leicestershire
« on: Thursday 20 November 14 22:49 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me find the family of George Hy Gardner in the 1911 Census please.  I’ve tried but so far without success!

1)George Hy GARDNER (b c1864 B’ham [shoe finisher, foreman boot finishing]
2)Spouse: Martha ____________ (b c1862 Chester            From Census 1891
3)Spouse: Amy ______________ (b c1871 London            From Census 1901
   i)   Gertrude GARDNER (b c1887 Northampton
   ii)   Mabel GARDNER (b c1888/1889 Leicester
   iii)   Lily GARDNER (b c1890 Leicester/c1891 Northampton
   iv)   William Henry GARDNER (b 1892 Leicester, d 1942)
   v)   Spouse: Annie STE(A)DMAN (b 1889, m 1916, d 1977)
   vi)   Elsie GARDNER (b c1894 Leicester
   vii)   Sidney GARDNER (b c1898 Northampton

George appears in the 1891 Census with wife Martha at Poplar Avenue in Leicester but then in the 1901 Census he is with wife Amy at Grove Road in Northampton.  When son William Henry Gardner married Annie Ste(a)dman in 1916, their marriage certificate stated that William’s father George was “deceased” so presumably George died between 1901 & 1916.  There is a death of a George Gardner registered Q4 in 1901 in Northampton aged 37 so (if this is the correct George) presumably only wife Martha/Amy & his children will appear in the 1911 Census.

Although George was apparently born in Birmingham, the birthplaces of the children & the location of the family in the 1901 Census suggests that in 1911, they may have been living in Northamptonshire or Leicestershire (although second wife Amy was apparently born in London).  I have been told that son William Henry Gardner served in the British Army during WW1 & may have been in the Army before then, possibly in India.

If anyone can throw any light on why George died so young at 37 or what happened to first wife Martha, that would also be of interest.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1881 Census Lookup - Sadkie Family Cheetham
« on: Monday 24 January 11 21:44 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone help please with an 1881 Census lookup for my ancestors the Sadkie family, who I believe were in the Manchester area at the time due to the birth dates & locations of their three sons?

The family at the time were:
•   Hyman Sadkie, born 1851 in Russian Poland.
•   Rosa Sadkie (nee Grachow), born about 1853, also in Russian Poland (his wife, they were married in about 1871).
•   Esther Sadkie, born about 1875 in Russian Poland.
•   Betsy Sadkie, born about 1877 in Middlesex (Whitechapel?).
•   Benjamin Sadkie, born about 1880 in Lancashire Cheetham.
•   Joseph Sadkie, born about 1882 in Lancashire Cheetham.
•   Julius Sadkie, born about 1884 in Lancashire Cheetham.
•   Rachel Grachow, born about 1831 in Russian Poland (Rosa Sadkie's mother).

The family appear to have emigrated to Britain from Poland in the mid/late 1870's & lived initially in Whitechapel, London, then Manchester, then back to Whitechapel & finally to Birmingham in the early 1890's.

I understand that daughter Betsy emigrated to the USA at some point.

If anyone can help, I would be pleased to hear.

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Bewdley/Ribbesford Marriage - Twist
« on: Saturday 24 April 10 22:18 BST (UK)  »
Can someone help with a marriage lookup please.

My great great grandfather was Joseph Twist, born about 1804 in Swinerton, Staffordshire.  According to LDS, he married Phoebe Ann (maiden name unknown) about 1839 in Bewdley & I think she was born about 1819 in Bewdley.  I believe he was a gardener & she was described as a "bible woman" in the 1871 & 1881 censuses.

I visited Worcestershire History Centre this week but couldn't find an entry in the parish register for Ribbesford several years either side of this date.  I think this might be because it was a non-conformist marriage, possibly methodist.

I would like to know as much as possible about them & their marriage eg when & where the marriage took place, their full names (especially her maiden name), ages, occupations, residence at the time of the marriage & their fathers names & occupations.

Can anyone help please?
