Staffordshire completed Look up Requests / William Martin - Baptism.
« on: Monday 02 May 11 16:51 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering if anyone has access to the Baptisms at St. Chad's, Lichfield, Staffs and if so, would they be kind enough to look up the baptism of William Martin, baptised on 26th December, 1826.   I would like to know the names of parents and more importantly to me, his father's occupation if it is given.   I obtained the baptismal information from Family Search, I think his father was John and mother Ann - my 3 x great grandparents, if correct.

Thank you.       Katy.

Leicestershire / The Elusive John Martin
« on: Thursday 17 March 11 12:16 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to find the birth, death and burial place of my 3x g.grandfather John Martin.   Known children are:-
Margaret Martin, born c1824 married John Whetton 1845.
William Martin, born c1826 married Mary Jackson 1844.
Robert Martin, born c1827 married Elizabeth Wright 1849.
Josiah Martin, born c1829 married Sarah Cook 1854. (Widow).
Henry Martin, born c1834 married Charlotte Lovatt 1861.

All born and lived in Loughborough.   I am descended from Robert.   I have marriage certificates for the above 5, on two the father's (John Martin) occupation is given as Soldier and on three as Bookkeeper.

John does not appear on the 1841 census - only his wife and the four boys.   Ann's age is given as 45 so born about 1796.   In September 1842 John's wife Ann Martin marries a John Oldershaw (Eldershaw) and on the m.cert. her "condition" is given as 'widow'.   I am assuming, rightly or wrongly, that if Henry was the last child to be born, his father John must have died between 1834 and Ann's remarriage in 1842.   Also on this marriage certificate it gives her father as George Dufty.   The only marriage I could trace for a John Martin and Ann Dufty was in Radford, Nottingham 4th December, 1815.   The PR states 'both of Nottingham Barracks a place Extraparochial', both signed their names in the presence of John Plackett, Joseph Nooke and (what looks like) Caroline Haford.   They were married by banns with consent of parents.

I don't know where John was born but Ann was born in Barrow-on-Soar.

I have looked on the NBI but no luck also on Freebmd 1837-42, could not check 1834/36,since these records only start at 1837.

If anyone has any ideas where I can go from here or if anyone is tracing any of the above mentioned, I would be pleased to hear from you.

Katy.

Nottinghamshire / Nottingham Barracks
« on: Sunday 27 June 10 21:08 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

My 3xgreat grandparents John Martin and Ann Dufty were married at St. Peter's Church, Old Radford on the 4th December 1815.   The entry in the Parish Register states "both of Nottingham Barracks a place extra parochial."   They were married "by Banns with consent of parents".

My query is how do I find out which regiments were stationed at the Barracks at that time.   If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

I apologise if I should have put this on the Armed Forces Board and would be pleased for it to be moved if I am wrong.

Thank you so much.     Katy.

Armed Forces / What Regiment did George belong?
« on: Tuesday 08 June 10 17:05 BST (UK)  »
The photograph attached (hopefully) is of my husband's paternal grandfather, William Wootton Price who served in the Royal Horse Artillery (Notts. Battery) Australian Mounted Division, and paternal great grandfather, George Price.   They met up in Alexandria, Egypt in February, 1916 when this photograph was taken.

Is it possible please to say in which Regiment George (on the right of the picture) was serving.   Sorry but this is the best photo we have as it is a copy of a copy.   We are told that on the back of the original photograph is written "To Dear Peggy from Will and Mr. Price - 17th February, 1916 Alexandria".

We have been told that William Price was the unofficial photographer to the Notts RHA and we have a really lovely big thick album of the photographs he took whilst serving in and around Egypt.
Any help or suggestions as to George's Regiment would be appreciated and most helpful.

Nottinghamshire / Who are the Parents of Frederick Lilley?
« on: Monday 07 June 10 13:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I have been trying to find the parents of Frederick Lilley, born c1811/12, Nottingham (according to all Census Returns).   He married before the 1841 Census (married to Ann Blackwell, born Ipswich , on 27th Feb. 1832 Radford, Nottingham).   Frederick's Aunt, Jemima Lilley,  was with the family on the 1861 Census.   Jemima was baptised 11th February, 1791 at New Sleaford, Lincolnshire (Family Search), her parents were George Lilley and Sarah.   I gather from this information that Frederick's father and Aunt Jemima were brother and sister - but who is Frederick's father?   Jemima remained unmarried throughout her life.

I have Frederick and family and also Jemima on all the Census Returns they could be on.   Jemima died Dec. Q 1866 in Nottingham (Ancestry).

Any help or guidance as to where I go next would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.     Katy.

Kent / William and Olivia Smith
« on: Friday 07 May 10 19:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi  everyone,

I am wondering if anyone is searching for Smiths in Chatham, Kent.   My gg grandparents were married 8th November 1824 at St. Nicholas, Rochester,he was William Smith (born c1783) and she Olivia Harrison (born c1803) - Olivia has been spelt in a few different ways including Oliffe, Olive etc.   William's occupation has been given (on various certificates) as Musician, Pensioner, Navy Pensioner.   I am wondering if it is at all possible to find out when he served in the Navy, which ship he served on and why he received a pension.   Whether his wife received any of his pension after his death on the 23rd May 1850.   I know they had about five children - Rosalie, Eliza (my g.grandmother) Jesse, Sarah and David.

I am just interested to know if anyone out there have these people in their tree.

Thank you.   Katy.

Leicestershire / Burial/John Martin
« on: Monday 03 May 10 18:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello All,

I am trying to find the death/burial of my ggg grandfather, John Martin.   His last known child was born in 1834 and ggg.gf's widow remarried in 1842, so I am assuming John died between 1833 and 1842.   He is not on the 1841 Census with his wife and sons who were living at Queen Street Loughborough.  I believe he was born c1796 +/-.

I would be grateful for any help or advice on this.

Regards.     Katy.

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / John Martin/Nottingham Barracks
« on: Saturday 01 May 10 16:21 BST (UK)  »
John Martin my paternal ggg grandfather was in the army according to two of his children's marriage certificates.   On three others he is shown as a book-keeper, so must have left the army at some stage.   The last child Henry was born in 1834 and I believe John must have died between 1833 and 1842 when his widow, Ann Martin, remarried a John Oldershaw (Eldershaw).   I cannot find a death for John Martin.   They lived in Loughborough, Leicestershire.

On the marriage certificate of Ann Martin (to John Oldershaw/Eldershaw) her father's name is given as George Dufty.  The only marriage I can find between a John Martin and Ann Dufty is 4th December, 1815 at St. Peter's, Radford, Nottingham and the entry in the Parish record say both of Nottingham Barracks being a place extraparochial, with consent of Parents.

So, my first query is, where can I find the death of John Martin (I already sent for one death certificate which proved to be a baby - so wrong there), second, does anyone know where records of Nottingham Barracks for around 1815 are held - if any, and thirdly any ideas where I can find the Regiment in which John Martin served.

If anyone out there can help to guide me in the right direction it will be greatly appreciated. Katy.
