Cumberland / Shoemakers at Whitehaven, David Skillen and John McMullan/McMillin
« on: Monday 13 June 22 19:19 BST (UK)  »
Greetings!!   I now have serious vision issues, so am unable to do a lot of searches now. My GG Grandfather was John McMullan a shoemaker. I found he and David Skillen were both shoemakers and likely friends (perhaps related?) at Downpatrick. David's wife was Grace. David was at Whitehaven on the 1851 census, but his wife showed as Rose? (I believe my John had a sister Rose McMullan, but she married a John Skilen at Downpatrick?). I thought Rose may have been helping David in 1851, but not sure where Grace was? Later census at Whitehaven show David a shoemaker with wife Grace. In 1861 David shows as a master shoemaker at Quay Street. There is an 1861 census at Whitehaven for a John McMillin shows as born abt 1819, is Irish, master shoemaker on Quay Street also, spouse Catherine. My John McMullan was married to Margaret Orr at Downaptrick in 1844, and John was shown as John Mullen, shoemaker at Hull, Quebec on the Canada 1852 census. Margaret had a son, David at Kingston, Ontario about 1853, but not sure who David's father was for sure. By 1861 John McMullan's wife Margaret had remarried to a John Hinds and they were at Toronto. I haven't found my John McMullan's fate after 1852 in Canada? I only see the John McMillin on the 1861 census at Whitehaven, and not sure of his status before or after 1861? I don't know who Catherine his spouse was, or where they married? I do have a DNA match for a person that has a Skillen on their family tree, an Ethel Skillen born abt 1886 at Whitehaven who married a Ralph Whittle, but can't be sure what name I match for? I think her parents may have been a William Skillen and perhaps a Sarah. I'm hoping to find out more about the John McMillin shown on the 1861 census at Whitehaven if at all possible. (Note: there was another different John McMullen with a spouse Catherine in the Cumberland, England area also, but I think was a laborer so not the same John.)  Any thoughts or help appreciated very much!!  Thanks so much!!  Tom McMillan (State of Washington, USA)

Hi    I’ve been trying to find my GG Grandfather’s birth record for about ten years with no luck. He was John McMullan/McMullen (last name spelling could vary), born about 1823, and was a shoemaker. He married at Church of Ireland, Downpatrick Cathedral, County Down, Ireland May 2, 1844 and I do have the marriage record.  By 1847 John and family were at Quebec, Canada. I lost track of John about 1852.

I just ran across a John McMullen, who registered to serve with the 43rd Foot Soldiers for the British Military, when he was just 14 years old in July of 1837.  This record shows this John was a shoemaker, and born about 1823.  The place of birth shows as Isle of Jersey, and Parish of St Helier.

I wonder if a record of birth at Isle of Jersey, for St Helier Parish for this John McMullen might be available?

Thanks!!  Tom McMillan

I would appreciate if someone could help me with an old photograph.  Unfortunately, all we have is the image from paper and not the original photo. My GG Grandfather is on the right standing with his 2 brothers.  Thanks!!  Tom McMillan

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Possible lookups for Morpeth 1761 and 1767
« on: Monday 27 April 15 03:02 BST (UK)  »
I have some information about my Robert Todd and Isabel Anderson who married at Morpeth in 1792, and had my ancestor, Matthew Todd in 1802 at Warkworth.

I can see at familysearch that a Robert Todd and Elizabeth Hunter married at Morpeth 12 Nov 1761, but I can't see the original register, and would be interested to know what other info there might be if anyone has access to that info.

Also, familysearch shows a birth for Robert Todd to a Robert Todd and Elizabeth at Morpeth 26 Jul 1767. Again, I'd be interested to know what other info the original register might show?

I'm hoping to find more evidence whether Robert Todd and Elizabeth Hunter may have been my Robert Todd's parents.

Robert and Isabel named their first Son Alexander Anderson Todd after Isabel's father, and their second son Robert Todd, so I thought there's a good chance that Robert's father was a Robert also?

Thanks, Tom McMillan

Travelling People / Licence for a Hawker from 1834 currently at EBAY
« on: Friday 05 April 13 21:23 BST (UK)  »
Not sure how long this will stay listed. Perhaps until it's sold. But it's a Licence for a Hawker for 1834, and it's for a person from Newcastle upon Tyne.  Here's a link:

Travelling People / Question about "Baptism by an ordinary Minister"
« on: Tuesday 11 September 12 22:58 BST (UK)  »
I purchased a birth record from Scotland's People that reads:  Dec 12th 1818 - - Stewart McGregor Drummond, licensed hawker, Maybole, and his wife Mary Anne Todd, his spouse, had a Son born and baptised by the ordinary minister named Stewart."

Several baptisms on the page showed "ordinary minister", and this was the only one who was a known traveller, and the only one shown as baptised by a Stewart. So, I wonder if Stewart Drummond baptised his own Son??

Wonder if anyone else has seen this, and might know more about what "ordinary minister" means?

Thanks!!  Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA, USA)

Northumberland / Alexander Anderson of Tosson or Flollerton, Rothbury
« on: Monday 03 September 12 21:58 BST (UK)  »
I have ancestors Isabel Anderson and Robert Todd who married in Morpeth July 17, 1792. A birth record for one of their children indicates Isabel's father was an Alexander Anderson native of Rothbury. There are 2 birth records for births for an Isabel Anderson to an Alexander in Rothbury, one in 1764 where Alexander is shown of Flollerton, and one for 1768 where Alexander is shown of Tosson Mill (the original of the 1768 record isn't available at familysearch.org, but someone had a record of what it said). I'm having a problem determining if one of the Isabel's is my ancestor. After a good deal of research it seems the wife of the Alexander Anderson of Tosson Mill was Alice Donkin. I show they married May 12, 1761 in Rothbury, but the original record isn't availble for it at familysearch.org I can't find other references to "Flollerton", and wonder if anyone could give me an idea of where it was located? I'm interested in knowing what the occupations were for these two Alexander Anderson's also.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Perthshire / Doune, Perthshire birth record for Anderson Todd
« on: Saturday 07 July 12 02:12 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandmother was Anderson Todd born about 1840 or 1841 to Matthew Todd and Helen Drummond. The 1851 Scotland Census shows her as "Andrew" incorrectly. Birthplace shows as Daun, Perthshire, but seems this must be Doune, Perthshire? A lot of other info is correct for family members on that census, so I think this is Anderson.

I haven't been able to locate a birth record at Scotland's People. I'm hoping to still find a birth record, and wonder if Doune birth records for the 1840/41 period are available??

Travelling People / Ontario, Canada Traveller Families
« on: Saturday 21 April 12 02:51 BST (UK)  »
I've found my Scottish & English travelling families, came to Ontario between 1852 and 1855. These were Drummond and Todd families, and perhaps Anderson's. Some were tinsmiths, basket makers, and horse trader/pedlars. I'm interested in knowing about possible related families to these, and other travellers who may have arrived during this time period from Scotland to Ontario!!

I've found my families in Wellington County, Ontario; Middlesex County, Ontario, other areas of Ontario, and Michigan, Illiois, and Wisconsin.

Thanks!!  Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA, USA)
