London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Watson The Temple & Great Hillingdon
« on: Wednesday 21 June 23 17:41 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to discover if John Watson of Great Hillingdon is related to John Watson of St Benet Paul's Wharf London.

On a brief visit to London (I live in Yorkshire) I visited the London Metropolitan Archives. There I found a document mentioning the above two Johns in a legal document referring to Hillingdon.
I wondered if they were related, because it looked like the word 'cousins' was written on the
outside (?)

The Hillingdon John is referred to as, of the 'Temple & Great Hillingdon', so I think he was a lawyer.

The other John, of St Benet Paul's Wharf, was also a Lawyer and Notary Public. During the Cromwell Commonwealth, although he was a Royalist, he was appointed as Bluemantle at the Heralds College
of Arms.

Although I have a large Watson pedigree (mainly from Worcestershire) which includes Bluemantle John Watson of St Benet Paul's Wharf London, I cannot connect the other John Watson to the family?

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Hungerford Great Ponton Lincolnshire
« on: Wednesday 21 June 23 16:46 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find any further information about Henry Hungerford-Parson of Great Ponton and his family.

Henry Hungerford had lived in 'the close' at the Cathedral of Salisbury. He had some of his children baptized there in the early 1600's.

He later became a priest. In 1624, a relative [Sir Edward Hungerford of Corsham, Wiltshire] granted a parish living for him, at Great Ponton in Lincolnshire.

I was fascinated to find when I viewed the  parish register from Great Ponton, that Henry had entered the death of his wife Jane 22nd November 1638.

However it was the additional information that he had written which was of interest.
'Jane the wife of Henry Hungerford parson and daughter of Henry Cotton once
Bishop of Sarum' (Salisbury)

Does anyone know any more? Or, if any of his children moved to Lincolnshire with their father?

Worcestershire Resources & Offers / Richard Savage of Evesham d.1552
« on: Friday 10 April 20 14:49 BST (UK)  »
Richard Savage married Alice Watson of Bengeworth Evesham, the sister of John Watson Bishop of Winchester who died 1584

Richard and Alice had a daughter Alice.
After the death of Richard Savage, his widow Alice married William Smith a mercer and sometime Mayor of Stratford upon Avon.

In his Will [Fifth year of Edward VI], Richard Savage mentions his mother (still living) his wife Alice, his daughter Alice,
two brothers John Savage  and Ralph Savage and brother-in-Law Thomas Watson.

Does anyone know of which Savage family Richard belongs to ?

Renfrewshire / John Cunningham Paisley
« on: Friday 10 January 20 14:05 GMT (UK)  »
As a Yorkshire man, I was surprised to find that my G.Grandfather John Cunningham was born in Paisley Scotland c.1820

He was the son of another John Cunningham and his wife (Ellen Magin born Busby Scotland)
The family gradually moved south to Yorkshire.

He married (as a minor) in 1838 at Hovingham Yorkshire his father being described as
Hawking Pedlar.
I have traced most of the family in Yorkshire, mainly Scarborough.

As I have some indications that they may have been Catholics, my query is, was he and his father Renfrewshire Scots? Or were they Irish immigrants?
Are there any records in Scotland to clarify?

[PS although I am 74, technically......can I play Rugby for Scotland?]

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Watson Crownthorpe & Wicklewood
« on: Friday 14 June 19 14:04 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor Thomas C. Watson was born in Herefordshire, the son of William Watson.  I have found not found any  reason why he moved to Norfolk?

The first date I have for my ancestor, Thomas Coningesby Watson 1745-1813 in the county of Norfolk, was his marriage in 1775 to Ann Bunn of Wymondham.

Thomas after this lived in Crownthorpe, where he was the Land Steward to the Wodehouse family at nearby Kimberley Hall. He was also churchwarden at Crownthorpe with his brother-in-Law John Bunn

Most of his descendants were of Wicklewood, starting with Armine Watson (named Armine after Thomas' boss-Sir Armine Wodehouse, 5th Baronet (c. 1714 – 21 May 1777)

Do any descendants have any Watson photographs?

Moray (Elginshire) / John, Elspit & Barbara Watson Rufford Forres Moray
« on: Tuesday 18 September 18 12:40 BST (UK)  »
While searching the Watson family in Dublin, I came across the Will of John Watson of Dublin, a bookseller, dated 1769.
In this he mentioned his brother William Watson 'at present in Edinburgh' and his two sisters
'Elspit and Barbara Watson at present in Rufford Moray'.

Up to this point I have assumed that this was an Irish family. Especially as they had a connection
through marriage with another Watson Dublin bookseller family [Elizabeth daughter of this John married Samuel Watson of the other Watson family, which claim to be from Worcestershire in England] I thought they might be cousins [?]

However, finding this Scottish information in the Will of John Watson 1769, his brother in Edinburgh and sisters in Rufford, makes me wonder if this was not just two separate Watson families, only knowing of each other through the Dublin Book trade?

Does anyone know of this Watson connection in Rufford? Or if the girls were just visiting?

Wiltshire / Henry Cotton Bishop of Salisbury d.1615
« on: Wednesday 07 February 18 11:55 GMT (UK)  »
In his Will, Bishop Henry Cotton asks to be buried in the Cathedral church of Salisbury, in the same place as his deceased wife Patience [his first wife]

Henry Cotton, the son of Sir Richard Cotton of Warblington and Bedhampton Hant's, was, as a young man rector of Havant, Hants. I have read that he married Patience c.1571

I have searched many pedigrees but cannot find any details of Patience's nee name [?]

The Cotton memorial stone is not in Salisbury Cathedral now, having been removed during some refurbishment.

Has anyone seen details of Patience's family name/origins ?

Tipperary / Henry Marvelle Read Roscrea Tipperary Ireland
« on: Friday 26 May 17 12:11 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know of this Read family?

I am researching the Watson family of Dublin [see Rootschat entry Watson City of Dublin Steam Packet Company posted Wednesday 14 September 16 12:25 BST (UK)]

Ina Emily Read was married to Dr.Edward John Macartney Watson of Dublin, who seems to be
the last male representative of this Watson family branch.

Ina's brother Henry (Harry) Marvelle Read proved the Will of Dr Edward John Macartney Watson

I would be most grateful for any help.
