Warwickshire / Westbourne House, 17 Westbourne Road, Edgbaston.
« on: Monday 19 February 24 16:53 GMT (UK)  »
In the 1911 census my husband's great-grandparents were living in The Lodge, 17 Westbourne Road.
I've found the family but can't find a census return for Westbourne House itself.
I've searched google as well but can't find out who lived in the property or whether it was still a private house or not.
My father-in-law thought that his grandfather had worked as a gardener for an embassy or consulate but I can't find any confirmation that this might be the place.
Any local knowledge about the place?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA query
« on: Monday 19 February 24 13:34 GMT (UK)  »
A new relative has cropped up on Ancestry and I’m trying to work who could be the father.
Can anyone help, working it out from the amounts of shared dna?
(I’ve used names to make it easier to talk about them but they aren’t the real names of the people involved)

Known relative line:
Alfred and 1st wife Clare --- son Fred --- grandson Glyn.
Alfred and 2nd wife Doris --- daughter Helen --- grandson Ian.
Ian shares 11% dna - 766cM with Glyn.

New connection:
Unknown father --- daughter Kim --- granddaughter Laura – g.granddaughter Mary.
Laura shares 6% dna – 446cM with Glyn.
Mary shares 4% with Glyn and 5% with Ian.

Possible complicating factor:
Alfred’s wives were full blood sisters.

Could Alfred be Kim’s father or do the dna amounts make it more likely that it’s one of his brothers – two of them were of an age and living in the right area.

Will be grateful for any suggestions.

The Lighter Side / American Revolutionary War Fort.
« on: Monday 08 January 24 13:23 GMT (UK)  »
I've just come across this round-up of a Revolutionary War fort discovered inside an old plantation house in West Virginia - https://twitter.com/johnbryanesq/status/1744042901280104535 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOKYScUocpI

"Basically an entire family’s belongings from the mid 19th century through 2016 were still in the house."

The finds from all periods that come out of the ground are amazing - the ancestors just filled any available hole with what was rubbish to them but treasures now.

Technical Help / Help Organising Photos
« on: Friday 10 July 20 15:35 BST (UK)  »
I've finally got around to scanning loads of family photos which is going fine.

What I want to do next is to sort them into into the right chrono order.  I'm using Photos on a Mac and I can't find any way of doing this.

Is there photo software that would let me move photos around until I have them in the right chronological order?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Very Few Matches
« on: Sunday 17 March 13 10:33 GMT (UK)  »
My Dad has had his y-dna tested and has loads of matches.

My OH has done the same (tested to 67 markers) and has only had a dozen matches at 12 markers - 11 of them from India and 1 from Saudi Arabia.

We've got a paper trail of his ancestors in Suffolk going back to the 1650s.

The 12 marker matches must go back a very long way.  Some of those matches have also tested to 67 markers but there's no link to my OH beyond the 12 marker level.  Does he have an odd/rare dna line or is it just that no closer relatives have been tested?

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Charles Smith 1902-1974
« on: Monday 16 January 12 12:59 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out anything about a Charles John Smith, born 1902 in London, died in 1974 in Cowplain.  His wife at the time of his death was Winifred but it's possible that she was his second wife.

He was an electrical engineer in HM Dockyard and went on to have a hardware shop.

Does anyone have access to the voting register or business directories?

Does anyone remember the shop?

The Common Room / Can't find a marriage
« on: Wednesday 15 September 10 16:32 BST (UK)  »
I've admitted defeat on this one!

I just can't find the marriage for a Charles John Smith, born in 1902 in Deptford.  He died in Hampshire in 1974.  On the death certificate, in the "Informant" box is the name Winifred Mary Smith and in the "Qualification" box are two entries - "Widow of the deceased", which is crossed out, and "Present at the death".  I'm assuming the first is crossed out because just being the widow isn't one of the accepted qualifications but that she actually was his widow.

According to other paperwork I have, Charles says he was married in 1928.  Knowing that my OH doesn't always get dates right, I've searched for a couple of years either side of that.  There's no way of knowing for certain where the marriage took place but Charles worked at the dockyard in Portsmouth for many years.

The nearest hit I have come across is a Winifred N Courtnage and Charles Smith, Dec qr 1928 in Berkhampstead, 3a - 2113.  The couple had two daughters but I haven't been able to find any children with a Smith/Courtnage parentage.

Can anyone help?

Armed Forces / Naval apprenticeship
« on: Wednesday 08 September 10 23:25 BST (UK)  »
I am following up a Charles John Smith, b. 1902, who by 1957 was an electrical engineer in the dockyards in Portsmouth.  The paperwork I have says that he had an Admiralty apprenticeship.  Is there any way of finding out more about him through the apprenticeship?  Would there be any paperwork available to see?
