Armed Forces / Couple of queries - Artillery ranks and Gazette dates
« on: Monday 17 December 18 15:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all and a happy festive season to you all

Only recently did I find my great-uncle was awarded the Military Medal in WW1 and I have started to search for the citation

Ive found the Gazette entry (7653) for him, 291388 Corporal FES Kinch 128 Heavy Battery (Oxford) but my queries are

In the artillery I thought the rank was a Bombardier rather than a Corporal
The Gazette date is 17 June 1919, although I dont have any details as to what action took place to merit the award I suspect it is much earlier as he ended the war as an acting sergeant

Any clues to either?

Many thanks in advance

14603161, Fusilier, killed at Anzio

Originally Private, 7th Ox & Bucks, transferred to 1/8 10th Feb 1944, killed 8 days later

My Nan told me that she had no idea why he was there when there were so many other places he could have been ...

Have been trying to discover why he had been transferred to the Royal Fusiliers for best part of 4 years now. However, seeing the diaries for 7 Ox & Bucks it seems that area held nothing except misery for everyone

Oxfordshire / Oxford City fire brigade records
« on: Wednesday 09 March 16 19:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

This is a long shot. My mum as an infant was rescued from a house fire winter of either 1944 or 1945 neither are WW2 related

Are any of you good people aware of brigade records, I believe it was called the NFS at the time, that I could search?

The fire was at Cardigan Street Oxford

Many thanks

Buckinghamshire / Putnam House - Mid Bucks Shelter and Maternity Home - Records
« on: Friday 28 June 13 09:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

Trying to track down admissions/discharges from Putnam House in 1939. Bucks RO say that all records were transferred to a charity, Parents And Children Together, but specifically said that they thought very few records prior to 1952 were still in existence

Ive contacted Parents And Children Together and they say they have no records from Putnam House at all

Has anyone had an joy in finding out where these records may be?

Thanks

Occupation Interests / Fit to serve in the 19th Century Merchant Navy?
« on: Tuesday 12 March 13 21:50 GMT (UK)  »
No specific lookups on this but a note of curiosity

My GGG Grandfather was medically discharged from the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1878 suffering from Pthisis

Yet he was registered as an Able-bodied seaman and continued to sail from 1879 until he died at sea in 1907

My question is were there any basic health checks for new crew in the MN around that time? Im curious how someone suffering a TB-type illness would be able to sign up?

Thanks

Berkshire / Village/town of Edelin in Berkshire c1851
« on: Sunday 27 January 13 14:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

On the 1871 census a potential lead in my research is noted as being born in Edelin in Berkshire. Ive been on to the BerksFHS and found the 1851 census list of villages but nothing came close

My other records with his birthplace all show Windsor/Eton. Could Edelin just be an enumerator error or was there such a place?

Thanks

Armed Forces / Army Deserters - general info required
« on: Friday 05 October 12 11:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Are there any public references of pre-WW2 Army desertions available?

Im helping a great-uncle trace one of his cousins. He recalls his mum telling him that his cousin (Alfred Neale b.1900 in Greenwich) turned up at home unexpectedly in the early 1930s  and then lost all trace of him

Suspicion is that he had deserted

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Warwickshire / Trying to find Child Burial Record
« on: Sunday 16 September 12 17:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Not sure where this should go so thought I would start here.

I am trying to find the burial record of Arthur Foster, age 2 months on 22nd June 1931. He died in Bidford on Avon on the roadside. His parents were travellers and had been staying there, and I suspect they would have been quite poor.  I have the death certificate and the death was registered in Alcester. I have been to Warwick Record office and checked some of the obvious parish records with no luck. I have also contacted the Church in Bidford who have no record either.

Is there any chance of finding this record or I am I wasting my time ? Any help at all would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Ruth
