The Lighter Side / Half-Cousin.
« on: Yesterday at 16:12 »
Received the copy of a will.
The person who made it was unmarried and she has made a number of bequests to individuals who are described as 'Half-Cousins.'

What is a 'Half-Cousin?'

Family History Beginners Board / Clifford Dorrington
« on: Friday 09 April 21 21:47 BST (UK)  »
Leaving the Navy in 1919 Clifford Dorrington (b1894) moved to 39 Gynor Place Ynyshir Rhondda S Wales.  He was born in Leeds the son of John and Amy (Thomason) Dorrington.

In 1889 one John Dorrington born Henham Sussex of 8 Llywelyn Street Ystradyfodwg died aged 70.  His widow Jemima died in 1901 aged 69.  They had children Rosalie (1861) unmarried - Ethel (1864) unmarried - John ((1865) - Edith (1870.)

Am trying to link Clifford Dorrington to the John Dorrington who died in 1889.  They are not father and son.
Clifford's father was John Dorrington b.1852/3 in Whittlesey Cambridgeshire - and this John's father is noted as James Dorrington on John's marriage certificate.

Possibly John Dorrington (Henham) who died in 1889 was a brother to James Dorrington (have no info about him.)

Of course it may just be coincidence that there are two families with the name Dorrington in the small village of Ystradyfodwg. (Clifford had no connection with the place before he left the navy.)

I have details of all Clifford's siblings and details of his life in South Wales and Australia.

Many thanks.

The Lighter Side / 1939 Register
« on: Wednesday 31 March 21 20:47 BST (UK)  »
Found aunt on 1939 Register - she was unmarried then  registered in her maiden name - above her name is written her married name - she married in 1948 - also noted is her new surname following her second marriage in 1970.  - nothing sinister!

I wonder what were the 'mechanics' whereby 'new' surnames were added.  Was the Register held locally or in central place and who informed the Register Keeper of the changes?

Subscribe to F M P.

When I access census returns the image comes up but the top and bottom quarters of the image are hidden - I can only see the centre of the image.
Can I remove these ??

The Lighter Side / Change of name.
« on: Wednesday 10 March 21 19:31 GMT (UK)  »
A general question re change of name -

the first sighting of the guy I'm researching is in 1885 when he gets married aged 32.

(Not giving his name as I've posted a number of times asking for help in tracing him - with no luck.)

My question is if someone changed their name in the 1870/80 period would they have had to do it officially and would there be a record of this change and where might it be recorded or did people just take on another name.

The Lighter Side / DNA test.

Friend wants to submit her DNA with a view to finding living relative(s)

Where should she start - is it only possible to do it on line?

Does 'Ancestry' give details.
