Ayrshire / Puzzling wedding certificate
« on: Thursday 26 August 21 17:26 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for reading this. I am most confused about a marriage certificate for my grandfather's sister, and wonder if anyone can help me.
She was Mary Anne Hervey, born 1869 Kirkmichael, although the family lived in Crosshill. Her father was Frederick Hervey and mother Mary Jane Caldwell. The family can easily be found on census returns for 1870 and 1880, and in 1891 Mary is in Ayr as a domestic servant. She marries in 1894, again in Ayr. Here is my puzzle.
She weds a John Duan, pit sinker, his parents given as James Duan and Ellen Mcglinn. This is undoubtedly the correct Mary Hervey's marriage, as both her sister and future brother in law are correctly named as witnesses, and her parents are correctly documented, including her father's job and mother's maiden name.
However, she is named as Mary Duan - if I correctly read the writing which is a little unclear - spinster. Surely she would have been Mary Anne Hervey if she was a spinster? Could it be a mistake and her new married name was put on the certificate instead of her maiden name?
I cannot see where Mary Anne and John Duan lived thereafter. His brother James was also a pit sinker and married in 1896 giving Benquatt, Dalmellington as his home, but I find no sign of his brother or their parents anywhere.
Ancestry further muddy the waters by suggesting that Mary Anne married a John Dalton in 1899 in Liverpool, her place of birth given as Crosshill in 1870, but even if she had been widowed shortly after her marriage to John Duan she would not have been recorded as Mary Anne Hervey, which was her maiden name. I think this must be another Mary Anne, but can easily stand corrected!
I would love to know what happened to Mary Anne Hervey and the rest of her story, but am struggling through a lack of information about her next years, or even anything about John Duan himself( in case another family member should know more about where they lived.) My grandfather died before I was born or he could have been a great help here!
Thank you for reading this. Any help would be much appreciated. Islay.

Armagh / Colwell family in Dunlarg
« on: Sunday 21 June 20 12:21 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a gentleman whose daughter, Mary Jane Caldwell, married my g. grandfather Frederick Hervey or Harvey in 1856 in Keady Armagh. He is named as George Caldwell, farmer, on their marriage certificate.
Other records show a farmer called George Colwell living in Dunlarg, 1795-1870. I wonder if this could be the gentleman whose daughter was Mary Jane Caldwell. Is Dunlarg very near to Keady so that the couple could have met?
Is there any way of finding out if his wife was called Sarah, as that name is mentioned on Mary Jane's death certificate, but with no surname.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you, Islay

Graveyards and Gravestones / Auchincruive cemetery
« on: Monday 15 October 18 17:59 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to find out if there is a cemetery at Auchincruive. My granny was brought up to Auchincruive in November 1962 for burial. I have asked previously to see if she is in the St Quivox churchyard where her parents are interred, but was disappointed that there was no sign of her.
She was Mary Harvey, born 1884 in Tarbolton, and her maiden name was McCracken. Her parents were Thomas and Mary McCracken.

Could anyone advise me how to proceed? My sister has just found a receipt that indicates her coffin was brought to Auchincruive. Are there any headstone records for there? I have already tried Ayr Cemeteries.

I would be most grateful if anyone could help me find where my granny lies. Many thanks, Islay

Argyllshire / Camerons in strontian
« on: Sunday 18 March 18 14:07 GMT (UK)  »
Please could someone kindly help me in my search? I have an ancestor called John Cameron, who in the 1841 census, writes that he was born in Strontian Argyll in 1828. His father was also John Cameron and his mother Kett.
Is Kett a family name for Katherine? His father was a leadminer. There is an unreadable(to me!)address given as Glasbhil. Is there a place called that? Could that be Glash-something? There are brothers Ewen, Donald, and Alex, and sisters Ann and Mary showing on the census. Is there anyway of finding the maiden name of Kett using her children's births?

So many questions, sorry! Any help would be gratefully received. Many thanks, Islay

Ayrshire / Is Granny in St Quivox churchyard, and my dead baby sister?
« on: Saturday 30 April 16 12:48 BST (UK)  »
I hope I am not posting in the wrong place but am not very good with computers! Some years ago I asked for a look up in St Quivox, and was kindly given the details of lair 300 for Catherine Cameron McCracken d 1923,and her parents Thomas McCracken d 1937 and Mary Cameron his wife, d.1937.

My Granny, Mary McCracken Harvey, was another daughter of Thomas and Mary, and sister to Catherine. After Granny died her coffin was brought to Ayr, but I have been unable to locate it to see if there was a headstone and to know her final resting place. I have tried a contact with Ayrshire Cemeteries but have been unsuccessful. She was born Mary McCracken in 1884 at Tarbolton, Ayrshire, and Granny died as Mary McCracken Harvey in November 1963. There was talk of a family lair, and I wondered if this was the same one as the earlier mentioned  McCracken one, if she had been put alongside these other members of her family. Is there anyone who could look up this to help me?

My parents also had a stillborn daughter born in November 1945.I have seen a receipt for a coffin for Baby Harvey, although Mum's married name was Smith, she had married the previous year in 1944 in Ayr.

We have never known where the baby was buried, if indeed she was ever given a name, and my parents are both dead now, and my sisters and I would love to know where our sister and Granny are lying now. Is there anyone who could help? It is just a long shot that they were added to the family lair in St Quivox. With much appreciation, thank you for reading this, best wishes, Islay.

Dunbartonshire / Did my sister have a name?
« on: Thursday 10 September 15 16:46 BST (UK)  »
Is there any way I can proceed with this enquiry? Your expertise would be greatly appreciated!

The first child to my parents was stillborn, and a girl. She was born in November 1945. The family were living in Glasgow at the time, in Clydebank, Millburn Avenue. What would have happened to stillborn babies then? Would they have had a communal grave, or would the family have a private burial?

I have no way of knowing if the baby girl had a name, but with the parents' details, could the grave/burial be traced in any way?

       Father:Mr Edward Smith, engineering draughtsman
        Mother:Mrs Mary Smith, nee Harvey

There was a family lair in Ayr, where my mum came from, which is a slight possibility, but again without a baby's name I am not sure how to proceed or find out where my sister is laid to rest. Sadly both my parents have now passed away and there is no one left to ask.

I suspect that this trail will be an impossible one to complete, but any assistance would be most gratefully received. Thank you for taking the time to read this, Islay

Ayrshire / Granny's resting place
« on: Thursday 10 September 15 12:43 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone could help me solve where my grandmother is buried?

She lived with us in London, but after her death I remember Mum and Dad taking her coffin on the train for burial in Scotland where she was born. I was a young child at the time and the exact place of interment was not told to me.

She was born in 1884 in Tarbolton, Ayrshire, and lived there until she married. Her name was Mary Sproat Cameron McCracken, and she married Charles Harvey, so her final resting place may be recorded as Mary Harvey. She died in September/October 1962.

The family has other burials in the St Quivox churchyard, so maybe she was put there? There is a mention of visits to Auchincruive to see relatives. Is that a possibility?

I would so appreciate any help that rootschat could give me in locating where Granny was buried. Both my parents have now passed away and there is no one left to ask in the family. Any help would be very gratefully received. Thanknyou, Islay

Ayrshire / birth look up,please
« on: Sunday 28 October 12 10:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hallo,I am at a loss to find the birth record of my two great uncles. All other members of the family are accounted for,and are on Scotland's People. BUT I have searched and searched for these two:

       Robert (George?) Harvey,born around 1860, at Crosshill,Ayrshire
and Thomas Harvey

  both with
       Father; Frederick Harvey
       Mother;Mary Jane Harvey,M.S. Caldwell

I know Robert died in 1950,aged around 90,in Ayr,having found his death certificate on SP,but there is no sign of his birth,or marriage to Elizabeth Macdonald - detailed on one of their own children's birth records as at Brora,Sutherlandshire,June 1884. Why can't I find that on SP either?!

There is another brother Thomas, who my mum told me went to live in Canada,so he definitely existed(!) but no record of his birth,or a marriage, or his appearing on any census either. The family all were born in Crosshill, and their births are found on SP:
     Margaret Matilda b.1867
     Mary ann b.1870
     Sarah Jane b.1872
     Eliza b.1874
     Frederick b.1877
     Charles b. 1880

If the missing Thomas was born after Charles,he would appear on the 1881,1891,1901 census with the family,as Charles my grandfather does, but as he is not there. Do I assume therefore, that he - like Robert - was born earlier and had left the family home  by 1881,as Robert had. (He is living in his own household with wife and child in Crosshill in the 1881 census, and cites Crosshill as his birthplace @ 1860 and @1863 in the 1901 census.)

Any help in finding when Thomas was born, and a record of his and Robert's birth would be very much appreciated. Why they are not on SP as the dates are after compulsory registrartion,I am not sure! Any advice also gratefully received.
      Thank you for reading this,Islay.

Leicestershire / samuel mitchell, man of mystery - please help!
« on: Wednesday 24 October 12 17:45 BST (UK)  »
I would be very grateful for any help/advice in tracing this man.

Samuel Mitchell married Alice May Brewin in October,1919,in Loughborough. Her family is quite easy to trace, but this Samuel's is not,and some help would be so much appreciated. All is says on the marriage certificate is that Samuel's father was called Alfred. Samuel lived in Loughborough all his life from that time on and died there in 1956.

However, whether he was born there,or elsewhere,is a mystery since the dates do not tie in with the Samuels who had fathers called Alfred Mitchell, searching throughout England. It is said that there is a link with Coventry somewhere down the generations, but at what point,I don't know.

Have tried the 1901 and 1911 census,BMD indexes etc.He had a brother called Alan and a sister called Brenda, and maybe more but that's all I know.

If he was 26 when he married, according to the marriage certificate,it puts a birth date around 1893.
Do we guess that his father Alfred would have been born 20-25 years prior to then?

Any help and advice would be very much appreciated. I cannot find him in any war records either...a man of mystery indeed. Thank you for reading this,Islay.
