Australia / Australian Womens' Land Army
« on: Friday 14 October 11 06:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am wondering if anyone has researched an ancestor who participated as a civilian in the Australian Women's Land Army during WW2.

My mother enrolled in the Queensland division but I only know that she worked picking cotton  at Biloela and picking fruit  on the Granite Belt.  I do not know when she enlisted or left the AWLA.

The National Archives did not have anything relating to my research.

I would really like to learn more about her involvement.

Hoping someone can assist.

Thanks

Australia / Early Parish Baptism Records
« on: Monday 29 August 11 00:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Would anyone know if Church of England Parish Records of Baptisms exist/can be accessed online for Victoria in the early 1850s please?
Am wondering if there is any baptismal record for my ancestor, Henry Gadsby, whose birth was registered at Creswick, Victoria in 1857.
More interested in any baptismal record (cannot locate any birth record) for his 2 older siblings - Emma Jane and William Gadsby.

Parents of all the above were William Gadsby and Sophia Gadsby.

Thanks

Hi there

I am wondering if anyone can shed light on the words "15 lashes" that appear at the bottom of my convict ancestor's 'brick', please?

It is obviously a punishment, but what is the  information source for this statement and where might he have received this punishment?- can anyone assist, please?
Thank you

Australia Lookups completed / Legal Documents pertaining to a death
« on: Monday 20 September 10 06:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am hoping someone may be able to explain what information may be included in documents held by the Q'ld State Archives in relation to an ancestor's death in 1912.

I obtained some information but was advised more is available and the number of pages (in brackets) and the photocoping cost.

Could anyone explain what I might find through ordering these, please?
* Certificate of Stamp Commission (2)
* Affat of Publication and Search (5)
* Copy of Probate (5)
* Inventory (3)
* Release (3)
* Summons to dispence with aps (2)
* Order (2)

I am also perplexed that death certificate is listed and 4 pages beside it.  Could this mean an inquest was held as death certificates are just a single page?

Would appreciate any help, please.

Australia / Henry GADSBY Numurkah district
« on: Monday 06 September 10 07:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Could anyone provide assistance with tracing an ancestor
Henry Gadsby, please?

In 1884 Henry married Birdget Kelly (daughter of Michael and Catherine) at Shepparton and his residence was given as Numurkah.

I cannot find out where he lived and when he came to that area.
By 1871 he and his mother Sophia, and some siblings had left Mt Blowhard.

By early 1890s he is living at Nyngan in NSW.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Regards

Hi

I am researching my great great grandfather, William Gadsby.  William was sentenced at the Old Bailey in October 1833 and subsequently transported to Australia as a convict in 1835.

His description (included in convict records) lists his address as the above in London.

Father William and mother Elizabeth testified against him at the trial.
I can find no information on William senior and Elizabeth.  William (father) refers to himself as a Hackney Coachman in his evidence.

Can anyone assist me with information on William and Elizabeth Gadsby, please?

Any help would be most appreciated.

England / Prison Hulk Euryalus 1833 to 1835
« on: Sunday 05 September 10 03:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I am researching my convict ancestor and am trying to locate any information on his time on the prison hulk Euryalus.

He was convicted at the Old Bailey on 17/10/1833 and spent time on the Euryalus at Chatham until his transportation to Tasmania in May 1835.

He was about 12 years old at the time of his conviction.
Name: William Gadsby

Any assistance or information would be most welcome.

Thank you

Hi

Through the Sands Directory: Sydney and NSW 1858 to 1933, I have found mention of ancestors Sophia and Henry Gadsby (mother and son) in relation to properties in the Dandaloo and Nyngan district of NSW.
Their names appear in  the years 1897, 1898, 1899 and 1900 as owners (I presume), of  properties "St Leonards", "Orange Plains" and "Balgay."
Can anyone advise how I could locate further information as to whether they owned or leased these, and  the purchase/sale of these properties, please?

Thank you.
