Dublin / Edward Dillon of Digges Street
« on: Sunday 11 June 17 09:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Is anyone able to search Thoms Directory in a bid to help me in regard to finding Edward Dillon who lived, at the time of his death (Dec 1850/Jan 1851), on Digges Street, Dublin.

I have been in contact with the Glasnevin Trust but they do not hold a record for this particular Edward Dillon's burial.

Edward is recorded as a brazier (deceased) on is son Peter's Dillon's marriage certificate in 1854 (this is Peter's second marriage and so I'm also seeking his first marriage, again with no luck so far).  Peter's occupation in 1854 was Joiner.

Many thanks in anticipation you may be able to offer.

Dublin / Dillons of Dublin
« on: Friday 02 June 17 21:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am really struggling researching my Dillon ancestors whom I have found in Dublin - is there anyone who could help me take this forward?

I am looking for Edward Dillon (b. c. 1770), I have a burial record of Edward on the 15/07/1850, his address at this time was Summer Hill, aged 70.

I believe that his wife was Bridge Alsop, she was buried on the 22/09/1852, again her was Summer Hill and she died aged 77.

Edward and Bridget married at St Mary's Pro Cathedral on the 12 February 1809, all their children (that I have found) were also baptised at the Pro Cathedral.

I believe Edward and Bridget were the parents of Peter Dillon (my ancestor), Peter was baptised in 1811 (as Dallon), Peter was a widower prior to his marriage in 1854 in Kendal, England.  I would really like to trace his first marriage but I cannot find anything after extensive research on-line.

There were 2 other people buried alongside Edward and Bridget Dillon, these were Edward Dillon aged 74 a builder of 6, Mountjoy Place the witness to his death was Margaret E Purcell.  Date of death 11 January 1888.  Margaret is described as Edward's niece.

and also a Jane Dorathea Purcell widow aged 70, who died on the 17 April 1876, she was the widow of a builder and lived at 22 North Gloucester Street, Dublin.

In the baptism registers of Edward and Bridget's children, there are several Purcells who were witnesses - so there seems to be a connection between my Dillons and the Purcell family - again I have searched but seem to be thwarted at every turn!!

Can anyone help point me in the right direction - essentially I would like two things, to now the name of Peter's first wife and get some more information on Peter's immediate family and the links to the Purcell family.

Many thanks in anticipation of any help you can offer.

Ireland / Death Certificate query
« on: Friday 02 June 17 19:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've very recently obtained the death certificate of - I hope - one of my Irish ancestors.  On the certificate under 'Rank, profession ... etc' it says 'independent class'.

Is there anyone out there who could tell me what that means exactly?  I know what I think it means ie someone of independent means who did not need a job or the state to keep them, but I would like confirmation if possible.

Many thanks,

Dublin / 1851 Dublin Census query
« on: Sunday 25 September 16 16:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I hope someone can help me - I wonder if anyone had access to the 1851 Dublin census which will show the heads of households in the Dublin area?  I'm looking for Edward Dillon born I estimate in 1788 (supposing that he was 21 when he married in 1809).

Edward was a Brazier (occupation taken from his son Peter's marriage in 1854).  I know from this marriage certificate that Edward was deceased in 1854.

I'm going round in circles with my Irish research and even though I've tried 'thinking outside the box' whilst looking into my Irish ancestors I've gone only millimetres.

Many thanks,

Loulou330
