Herefordshire / Cornelius Birch
« on: Monday 03 December 12 11:35 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have Cornelius Birch of Hereford (b. 1817 Hereford St Owen) in their tree? He's listed as my Gt Gt grandfather's father on the birth certificate, although my Gt Gt grandfather's surname is Williams (George). His mother is Caroline Williams.
I'm wondering if Cornelius was a romany gypsy. My grandmother who was descended from Cornelius was very dark skinned and we always wondered where it came from. I believe that Birch is a romany surname and Cornelius seems to be a popular romany christian name, however Cornelius seems to be settled in a house by 1841.
Also there is a Welsh connection to this family - the same grandmother was christened in Trevethin near Pontypool, I have no idea why as the family were in Hereford as far back as 1817 and my Gt grandfather had moved to Hammersmith when Nan was born.
 Any ideas?

Derbyshire / Edward Herbert Moss of Shipley, Derbyshire b. 1894
« on: Sunday 15 May 11 09:52 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to trace my maiden name, Moss and had for a time come up against a brick wall with my Great Grandfather Edward Moss. He was a merchant seaman and lived in the Liverpool/Wirral area at the time of his marriage and death, but I'd been unable to find his birth in either Cheshire or Lancashire.
Now I have a copy of his seaman's record with a date of birth Jan 1894 and place of birth Shipley, Derbyshire. Hooray, I thought ;D! I've found him, but alas no :'(, Ed has evaded me again. No trace of an Ed Moss born in Shipley in 1894 in either the census or BMD records.
I'm not even sure the name is correct as there are a few questionable details on his marriage certificate. He takes a middle name "Collingwood" which has been continued down the family line, however I think he took the name of the Collingwood Dock in Liverpool! Any suggestions please?  ???

Lancashire / Edward Herbert Collingwood MOSS
« on: Monday 14 June 10 11:28 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather was Edward Herbert Collingwood MOSS. As a family we do not know much about him as my great grandmother left him fairly early on in their marriage. They had 2 children; my grandfather Edward, and Dorothy who emigrated to America.
Edward Herbert Collingwood MOSS came from Liverpool and was a Merchant Seaman working as a butcher on the ACCRA, a ship in the Elder Dempster line. He was a warm, likeable man according to my grandmother.
I have not been able to get beyond his marriage to my great grandmother. He was married in 1914 aged 28. We have a letter from him to my grandfather in the 1940's and he puts his address as Moreton, Wirral.
I cannot find his birth certificate. I thought with the middle name Collingwood it would be easier but have not been able to find him.  :(
There are lots of Edward Mosses born in the Liverpool area and I can see lots in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can pin him down?
Many thanks for taking the time to read this,  :)

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / FAITHFULLs/POTTICARYs of Longparish
« on: Monday 14 June 10 10:24 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone else researching the family of Edward FAITHFULL & Elizabeth POTTICARY of Longparish? I am descended from their son, Walter.
Edward and Elizabeth lived in Malthouse Cottage which still stands today. They had a large family. Most, if not all of their sons left the village to make their way in London with varied levels of success. One of the eldest sons, Charles ran the Chapter Coffee House in Paternoster Row, a stone's throw from St Pauls Cathedral. The Bronte sisters are known to have stayed there when Charles was manager, whilst visiting their publishers in London.
Walter, Edward, George Alexander & Robert Adnam worked as warehousemen and later merchants in the city of London.
I would love to share information with anyone else researching this family.  :)

Buteshire / Joseph Stuart BLACK of Kingarth, Bute
« on: Wednesday 26 May 10 13:22 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching my other half's family and his great grandmother's name was Catherine Bannatyne BLACK born in 1864 in Kilchattan Butts. Her father was Joseph Stuart BLACK (born 1825 in Quochag Butt), keeper of the beavers on the Mount Stuart estate. I've found his article on the beavers published in the "Journal of Forestry" in Feb 1880, a very exciting find!

Joseph married Jane WYLIE in 1852 in Paisley, and they had 10 children. These children married into POLLOCK, MARR, MILLAR and STENHOUSE families and others I have yet to find. At least 6 of the children left Bute for the mainland, Glasgow in particular. Catherine ended up in England. I'm not sure how.

Joseph's parents were John BLACK and Mary McLEAN. John was born in Auchagoile in Kilfinan in 1791, and Mary came from Taunich in North Bute.  She was born in 1783. Her brother Daniel McLEAN was a gardener on the Mount Stuart estate.

Is there anyone else out there researching Joseph Stuart Black and his large family? If so, I'd love to share the information I have found, and hopefully find out some new information.
