Somerset / Locations
« on: Saturday 22 July 23 02:33 BST (UK)  »
When you do locate a record and it says an event like a birth took place in Pilton or anywhere else  in Somerset. That is where the registration took place not the actual birth.
Would anyone know of a website that shows all the villages & settlements around any town in Somerset.?  This would be such a big help to everyone I'd be very surprised if there is not something on the web that would show and name these places. If you know of any such website please post the URL for all to see.
Thanking you all.

Dorset / What Happened 1743 ?
« on: Saturday 27 June 20 07:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi Chatters,
Is anyone able to tell me if a plague or some other sort of catastrophe hit Dorset in the last quarter of 1743 ?
I have a family of ORCHARDS where parents and at least half of their children died within a week of each other.
I know there was a lot of deaths from Scarlet Fever at sometime, but I don't think it was in 1743.

Cheers

Somerset / Place meaning
« on: Wednesday 17 June 20 05:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi All Chatters,

In my searches of Somerset and other shires I often see a place name like Fisherman's Row and other such names. In my latest searches around Martock I have come across places like Hurst Bow and Hinton Bow.  Could somebody tell me what does the BOW represent or mean in those names.?

Thank you,
Geoff   ???

Northumberland / Where is it ?
« on: Thursday 19 September 19 05:11 BST (UK)  »
Could anybody tell me where New Caetby NBL, is located please.
My wife has a great grandmother named Mary Agnes BUCHANNAN, she says in different census  records and in other records that her place of birth is that above, or Ireland, Newcastle upon Tyne, or just Northumberland.
The most used though, is that New Caetby, NBL location.

Perthshire / Multi Surnames. Why is it so ?
« on: Tuesday 18 June 19 07:41 BST (UK)  »
I have been working on the family of my 6x great grandparents, Alexander GOW and Margaret ROBERTSON.  When I search for records when dealing with this family there are the connections I'm looking for but I'm presented with records where Alexander has so far come up with 3 different Surnames. There is the normal Alexr GOW then Alexr ROTSON, then Alexr McGlashen.

I have since found that his daughter Isobel married Duncan MOON at Blair Atholl in 1762. Duncan's grandmother was Janet McGLASHAN.  That could be one association.
This is not the first time I have come across this feature of multiple Surnames, Can anyone explain why this is happening.?  Is it a carryover of the Jacobite times, where I could understand the need for alias's being used?  Can anybody help with this question.

Scotland / Name Substitutes
« on: Thursday 25 April 19 06:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
Has anyone ever heard of the name DANIEL ever being used as a substitute for DONALD ?
I read this recently, and I would like to know if this name swapping was an accepted practice in Scotland.  In the mid 18th century through to the start of the 20th century is the time frame I'm looking at this covering.
If this is correct, it would really put the fox in my hen-house of names.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Death details
« on: Tuesday 16 October 18 02:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have been looking for a death or burial for a rellie David WILLIAMSON in between 1835-1840 in or about Dundee. I found a few fellows of that name and between those dates, but in the records I've found there is no way to prove he is the correct David. There is no mention of any family in the ones I have found.  Are they all like this?
Even the newspaper records of their death they do not mention family unless he is some person of importance they will say that he is the son of ?

How do you prove you have the right family in Dundee ?

Cheers
Geoff
