The Common Room / Record of British Passports issued
« on: Wednesday 30 November 11 18:18 GMT (UK)  »
After weeks or even months of getting the run around from a Consulate office, maybe somebody here can help......

Is there any record, either online or at an office/department, that would have a record of a British passport that was issued in 1949 or 1950.

The story behind this is...my dad was born in India to British parents. They returned to England in 1935 when he was just over a year old.

In 1950 he moved to South Africa traveling alone on a British passport. He now wants to visit the UK and made application for a new passport. This has already dragged on for 4 months and the latest "proof" the Consulate want is proof of how he got into the UK (76 years ago at the age of 1 year). Thanks to the help of a Rootschat member we got a picture of the passenger list from Ancestry.com, apparently they now want the document to come from the Archives.

If there is a record somewhere that he can reference the Consulate's office back to the original passport number or date of issue, it may just stop all this nonsense.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Other Countries / INDIA : Passenger Lists ** COMPLETED **
« on: Tuesday 29 November 11 11:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Any suggestions where I should start looking for passenger lists for ships sailing from India to the UK around about 1936.

My dad returned to the UK with his mom (and maybe his dad) sometime between 1935 and 1937. He was a baby at the time and cannot remember any details of the voyage. The UKBA are wanting the details (dates, name of ship etc) from him despite this happening 75 years ago  ??? ???

The passenger names I am looking for are Florence and Dennis Prince and possibly Wilfred Prince. The full journey would have been from Calcutta to Manchester or Derbyshire but I do not know which ports were used for departure and entry.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Glenn

Rutland / Thomas Burton and Margery Grenham - Little Casterton Church
« on: Tuesday 26 July 11 21:22 BST (UK)  »
Inside the church at Little Casterton, Rutland there is a bronze effigy of Sir Thomas (died 1381)and Lady Margery (died 1410) Burton.

I made a visit to the church in July but couldn't find it (maybe it had been sent away for repairs/cleaning ???) but there was a visitors book in the church and a few people previously had made comments about the effigy and some were also descendants of Thomas and Margery.

Has anyone seen the effigy recently and are there any other descendants of theirs on RC?

London and Middlesex / Walter Drysdale born London c1894
« on: Tuesday 06 July 10 17:42 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to assist a friend who needs some help sourcing a birth certificate for his grandfather Walter John Drysdale.

According to Walter’s military documentation he was born in the Parish of West Kensington, London, in the County of Middlesex on the date 1.9.1894. For some reason there doesn't seem to be a record of his birth.

His details in 1914 when signing up were (next of kin and his address) : Mrs J Drysdale, 31 Bronsart road, off Munster road, Fulham, London SW. His education is listed as School Higher Certificate - Senior, 1912 South African. [Not sure who Mrs J was as Walter would never talk about his family when he was alive].

His military service was with the 3rd Infantry, 3rd Mounted Brigade. 1914-1915 St  General Service in connexion with Overseas Operations. 1916 to 1919.   His details on discharge were Number 208, Rank C/Sgt., Drysdale W.J., H.Q. Staff S.A.N.L.C. Regiment.   His trade as stated on enlistment Clerical.

He did sustain a serious leg injury in 1915 and received a disability pension until he died in 1979.   He was injured in South West Africa now Namibia.

Firstly, any ideas on why the birth is not recorded anywhere,
Secondly, is there any way of proving where he was born, maybe hospital records, in the absence of a birth record.

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Glenn

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Census request : Dartford/Mabel Phillipson
« on: Sunday 13 June 10 14:50 BST (UK)  »
I don't have access to the 1911 Census records and would appreciate some help on Mabel Phillipson. She married my g/grand father (Edwin Henry Thompson) in 1910 in Dartford. The 2 addresses on the marriage certificate appear to read : 10 ? Reed Cottages, Loanee Junction and Liscard, Bromely Avenue, formerly but not residing at 3 Vinsons Terrace ??? Lane, Loanee ? Junction.

My grandmother was born in 1912 and her address on the birth certificate was "The Cottage, Frokendale farm, St Mary Cray Rd".

At the time of the census Mabel could have been at any of the above addresses.

I would appreciate any details from the census as I am trying and determine/confirm where Mabel originates from.

Thanks
Glenn

Kent / Mental Hospital in Gravesend in 1930's
« on: Wednesday 09 June 10 14:51 BST (UK)  »
My grandmother used to work at a mental hospital when she was younger. Her address when she was married in 1936 and when my mom was born in 1938 was Pelham Road, Gravesend.

Does anybody know of a mental hospital that may have existed nearby (I imagine in walking or cycling distance) from Pelham road?

The only document I have other than the 1938 marriage certificate is her birth certificate showing she was born in Dartford in 1912. So there is also the possibility that the hospital was in Dartford before moving to Gravesend.

Her name was Annie Doris Thompson (married Smith).

Hi

Please can someone help me with this.

I have an Edward Burton Phillipson who was married in St Pancras (registered Mar 1846  1/299). Using the same reference number I have 4 options as to who he married, either Eliza Draper, Charlotte Henshaw, Mary Ann Marriott or Margaret Lydia Spencer). Is there a way to confirm who the marriage partner was on Free BMD?

Otherwise could someone kindly look up on the 1851 census and see who was living with him at that time.

He had a son with the same name who was born in 1849 and it appears the person I am looking for died in 1855 but was was deceased by 1873. The son was born in St Pancras and married in Easthamstead, Berks. I don't know when the family moved.

Anyone else with this name in their ancestry?

Any help would be appreciated.
