Yorkshire (West Riding) / Hannah or Hanah North 1752 Almondbury, Yorkshire
« on: Sunday 26 July 20 20:12 BST (UK)  »
Just revisiting this area of my tree and trying to re-assess the evidence.

My 2gGrandmother, Sarah North, was born to my 3gGrandmother Hannah North in 1777 (baptism Huddersfield St Peter 15th November 1777). The only relevant record for Hannah seems to be a birth in Almondbury(baptism Almondbury 22nd April 1752). The parish register puzzles me.

I had always assumed that because Sarah was born Sarah North and the register records only her mother, Hannah North, that Sarah was illegitimate. Is that necessarily true?

In my experience illegitimate children were recorded as such with sometimes, but not always, the name of the putative father. Alternatively, could Hannah have been a widow? What was her MS?

If so, one assumes that the father was alive 40 weeks or less before the birth. Who might he have been? I've tried looking for young male North deaths at the relevant time but drawn a blank.

I am very confident(DNA records) that the marriage of Sarah(North) to Joshua Cliff is correct. I am equally confident from DNA records that the North connection is correct and extends back to 1066 and beyond but there is just a slight area of confusion about exactly what the connection is in the mid 18th century.

Is anybody else working in this area? Views?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Croslande & Hawksworth families and colonial America
« on: Saturday 23 November 19 22:51 GMT (UK)  »
Being descended directly from these families I would like to research their role in the establishment of colonial America.

Can anyone suggest a readable book which focuses on either or both of these families? There are plenty of history books dealing with the period but none of them appears to make much more than a passing reference to them and they are pretty solid academic texts.

The focus for both families is south Yorkshire around Almondbury

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Henry Beaumont of Crosland/Crossland(probably circa 1450)
« on: Friday 06 September 19 23:09 BST (UK)  »
Henry Beaumont of Crosland or Crossland is the father of Katherine Beaumont who became the wife of William Armitage/Armytage.

Their son, John (died1574), became the first Armitage "of Kirklees".

I can see the Armitage line but I'm really struggling with tracing Henry Beaumont of Crosland, father of Katherine. Online genealogies attach Katherine to to various other Beaumonts but it seems that Henry is the correct candidate for being her father.

Who is Henry and what is his lineage? Can anyone offer any insight?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / John Armitage 1672, Longwood House, Huddersfield
« on: Friday 23 November 18 13:41 GMT (UK)  »
I've just discovered that John is, I think, my6gGrandfather. His DoB is given as 1672 Longwood House, Huddersfield but I can't find much about the house online. Can anybody help with details of him, his lineage and the house itself.

I'm interested in the inter-relation of Armitage and North families. What's the connection between Armitage and Bolling Hall?

Durham Lookup Requests / William Stewart(1827) marriage to Elizabeth Shakelton(1830)
« on: Wednesday 21 November 18 17:04 GMT (UK)  »
This one one has me and others stumped.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the details of this marriage?

Probably Auckland St Helens between 1845 - 1850( but not absolutely certain). I'm particularly interested in Williams parentage.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Royal Stewart DNA
« on: Thursday 25 October 18 12:04 BST (UK)  »
I have my raw DNA profile as text file. There are thousands of lines relating to Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms i.e nucleotide pairs at each location on each chromosome. I have pasted in the format below:

rsid               chromosome    position     allele 1    allele2

rs190214723     1                 693625 T   T
rs3131972         1                 752721 G   G

I understand most of this except the rsid (Reference SNP cluster ID) number. Certain genes are specific to Royal Stewart ancestry S781 being an example.

How does that number relate to the rsid? Somehow I feel it is unlikely that simply searching the text file for the S781 sequence in the rsid is the way forward. Incidentally, I did that and got 780 hits.

Is the rsid simply a resource locator to allow access to further information.

Northumberland / Marriage of David Logan to Ann ????
« on: Tuesday 02 October 18 19:52 BST (UK)  »
Jane Logan (Berwick 1793) was the daughter of David Logan(Berwick 1765) and Ann (Northumberland, probably Tweedmouth from census info, 1772)

The only marriage of a David Logan to an Ann that I can find is in Symington in Ayrshire in 1791. Ann is possibly Ann McNaught but I'm unsure. The date fits with the birth of Jane but Ann would have been under 21 so could not have married in England unless she had parental consent.

Is this an example of a Scottish irregular marriage which more famously happens at Gretna? Why go to Symington when you live in Tweedmouth which is a stone's throw from Scotland and you could be there on foot in minutes?

Any thoughts or alternative records/explanations would be appreciated. Does the Northumberland record of their marriage simply not exist?

Selkirkshire / John Stewart 1738, Selkirk
« on: Saturday 18 August 18 22:18 BST (UK)  »
My 4GGrandfather, John Stewart, was born in Selkirk according to other people's family trees and his father is most commonly given as James.

Can't find a birth record on Scotland's People which corroborates that and the only record I can see for  John Stewart, born in Selkirk, on IGI gives the father's name also as John not James.

Anybody got any suggestions for sources on this or reliable information from their own researches. Any info would be appreciated

Moray (Elginshire) / Moray:CV NUMBERS AND UK MILITARY DATE AND FACTORY CODES
« on: Wednesday 28 February 18 08:56 GMT (UK)  »
This is a very niche area and perhaps related to local history rather than family history.

My cousin, who is the curator of one of the Royal Navy museums, is trying to find details of a facility in Moray which may have produced radio valves during WW2. These were produced under military CV codings rather than the civilian valve type numbers.

I have attached the link below for anyone who wants to see the full context but does anyone know of such a factory/production facility in the area at that time.
It's a real shot in the dark that someone might know something but let's see what's out there.

I noticed this

X  MOV, Springvale, pre Oct 1951
Y  MOV, Moray, pre April 1945
YA Leigh Electronics, Havant

Seems to suggest there was a Marconi Osram Valves plant in Moray, never heard on one.
