Sussex / Victorian Pulborough
« on: Tuesday 06 July 21 20:16 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I was wondering if any of you lovely people could assist me. I'm a primary school teacher and I'm looking to update our history topics for next academic year.

One of my favourite topics I studied at primary school was the Victorians. We traced the Victorian villagers from the 1881 census. We located their houses and their graves etc and really got to know them and their lives in Victorian times. This topic sparked my passion for history and lead to me research my family tree etc and I would love to recreate this with my class.

I know I can access the 1881 census for free through the family search website but it is requiring me to search for names rather than just the village. I was wondering if anyone would be able to explain how I can search for just the village or point me in the right direction for somewhere else I can find the 1881 census pages for free? Ideally I'd love the entire village census returns. Obviously Ancestry etc are unaffordable for a school budget and I've already used all my various emails for the 7 day free trials previously for my own family tree research.

Anyhow, if anyone can help I'm after census returns for Pulborough, West Sussex.

Thank you in anticipation.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Middlesbrough newspapers
« on: Thursday 18 February 21 16:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

Please can someone tell me the name of the local papers. I'm searching for a possible article about a man who passed in 1979. He was apparently in prison at some point and I'd like to see if I can search for newspaper details.

Thanks in anticipation,

The Common Room / The paper trail vs family stories vs DNA?
« on: Friday 09 September 16 18:57 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure where to post this so please feel free to move of necessary :-).

The paper trail is as follows:

Tom Lockwood Gilleard was born in the December ¼ of 1885. His parents were Philip Brittain Gilleard and Mary Ann nee Fisher.

Philip B Gilleard died aged 40 in the June ¼ of 1883

Mary Ann Gilleard nee Fisher married Alfred Lockwood in the September ¼ 1887.

Who is Tom's father?

Family story dictated that Philip Gilleard was a hard man and liked a drink. Tom was given Lockwood as a middle name as Alfred Lockwood was his father but as his mother  wasn't married to Alfred Lockwood at the time he kept Gilleard as a surname. They later married when it was deemed enough time after Philip Gilleard's death.

DNA has thrown a spanner in the works.
My dads DNA came back today. I was expecting nigh on 100% UK. But it states 60% Western Europe. He has an extremely high match for a 4th cousin who has Gilleard in her surname list. It's quite a rare name in the UK and of heugenot descent.

So where do I go from here? Is it possible to figure this out or not?

Obviously I need to email this cousin but cannot afford an ancestry subscription right now, it won't let me have another months free trial either!

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Thanks.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Trying to figure a family tree mystery with DNA.
« on: Sunday 04 September 16 21:36 BST (UK)  »
Is this possible?

Just received my mums ancestry DNA results and a distant cousin in the USA has done a mitochondrial DNA test. Is it possible to compare the results to see if they're more closely related than the paper trail insists?

Cousin thinks that my mums great aunt could possibly be his direct line rather than his aunt as many things don't add up.

Obviously comparing, if possible, their DNA, would prove they're first cousins once removed or more distant cousins but is it possible through an ancestry and a mitochondrial?

Sorry if this is a daft question. I'm struggling to get my heard around the complexities of DNA!

Thanks

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Where do I go from here please?
« on: Saturday 03 September 16 21:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

Today I received my mum's ancestry DNA test back.

What do I do now?

We were mainly interested in the ethnicity results and proving the rumored Scandinavian genes, which we have.

The results were 36% Great Britain, 28% Irish and 22% Scandinavian plus 14% other very small % of others.  How far back would the Irish and Scandinavian be at these percentages?

Can I narrow this down further or not?

It also came up with some cousin matches in the 4th to 6th cousin level which is interesting.

I've heard about gedmatch, can I transport mum's results that? And what would that tell me?

Basically, I am totally clueless about DNA but very interested and and willing to learn.

Sorry I've waffled!

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Recent historical newspapers/court records?
« on: Friday 20 May 16 16:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I've been lead to believe that my great uncle spent time at her majesties pleasure. He was born in Middlesbrough in 1925 and died in 1981.
Where would I look for information regarding this please?

I can't get to local archives as I'm at the opposite end of the country!

Thanks in anticipation

The Common Room / Finding living relatives
« on: Thursday 05 May 16 20:58 BST (UK)  »
Long story short, my gran asked for her ashes to be placed with her grandmother but we can't do that without permission from the last person who allowed a person to be buried in the plot.

Therefore I'm looking for a person born in 1959, so very likely to still be alive but I'm stuck. I have their birth but can't find anything after that, no marriage, death, no mention on the electoral roll.  I've tried Facebook and linkedin. The last time I can find of their name it's mentioned on a 2013 obituary of their step father where is says ***name*** and family. Where can I look now? I'm assuming they will have moved away from the area they were born...?

The first name has a number of nicknames/shortenings and the surname isn't common but neither is it uncommon.

Any tips would be marvellous.

Thank you :-)

This is rather a long shot but I'd be ever so grateful if anyone could look up a name/address in the electoral roll for North Ormesby and/or Middlesbrough.

Basically, my grandma recently passed away and her wish was to have her ashes sprinkled on the grave of her grandmother who brought her up when her mother died, gran was only 6 mths old at the time and she was very fond of her granny.

Now, our problem is that William Hubbard (my grans grandfather) owned the grave (in North Ormesby), he, his wife, Kate, son or grandson, Edward and Edward juniors young daughter are buried in the plot.  When William died the next of kin, who has plot rights, was listed as A Hubbard of 39 Myrtle Street. We need to find this person, or their descendants, to ask permission to place my grans ashes there.

I've obviously researched all the Hubbard's and the only A Hubbard I can find is William and Kate's son Arthur, born 1900 in Cargo Fleet. I believe he died in 1971 however and the last permission given for a burial was in 1981 so I wondered if anyone could check the electoral roll for around that time to see who was living at 39 Myrtle Street.  There is Myrtle St in Middlebrough but the family all lived at Cargo Fleet, South Street and North Ormesby. Was there a Myrtle Street in those places or just the one in Middlebrough?

Thank you in anticipation
