Technical Help / Netgear NAS
« on: Sunday 31 December 23 11:46 GMT (UK)  »
This is pretty obscure and I suspect only one of the "techie" people may be able to offer a clue:

I've run a Netgear NAS for may years without any problems.   Earlier this year, Netgear announced they were withdrawing ReadyCloud (their remote access utility) but access to the NAS as a plug and play device on a local network would continue.   This was a bit annoying as I liked to be able to access the NAS when away - but Hey Ho!

ReadyCloud was duly retired and at the same time I lost access to the device as a plug and play device.   This has been very annoying as I had several folders mapped as virtual drives.   I can now only use the NAS by accessing it via my browser using it's IP address on my network which is less than ideal.  If I look at my network using File Explorer I can see the NAS but am unable to access it.

I'd really like to get it's full functionality back, so any pointers would be gratefully received.

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Family Tree Maker
« on: Thursday 29 July 21 12:58 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone else seeing a change in the way FTM is working?

When looking at an individual, If I click on the hints, I get a list of records as normal.   If I then click on one of the GRO records (as opposed to a tree hint) - I randomly find that there is no preview and therefore no way of accessing the original record.   The only solution I've found is to log into Ancestry with a browser.

It always worked fine and I've only noticed this for a couple of weeks.

Technical Help / Default Folders for Windows 10
« on: Wednesday 03 March 21 09:33 GMT (UK)  »
I've carried out a clean install of Windows 10 and have ended up with all files being saved by default to OneDrive.   I want to change the default to my hard disk and if I follow the instructions to go to Settings/System/Storage I can see the different categories, with both New Documents and New Photos being saved to OneDrive by default.   The problem is, I can select my hard disk from the drop down but when I press select it returns to OneDrive.

Any suggestions??

Oxfordshire / Copying OFHS CDs
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 17:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have a number of OFHS parish transcripts on CD.  I’m in the process of changing my PC  and won’t have a CD drive.  I want to copy each of the CDs onto my hard drive and assume that I just copy the contents of each CD to an individual folder - am I correct?

I know most of the data is available on Ancestry, but I still occasionally use the PR transcripts as some of the Ancestry indexing is rather “creative “

Technical Help / Odd issue with iTunes
« on: Tuesday 29 September 20 10:27 BST (UK)  »
Hopefully there is an iTunes expert or someone who has had a similar problem can help:

I've noticed that a couple of albums that have been purchased do not appear in the default folder where all our iTunes music resides.   I normally copy these over to our NAS so that they can be accessed by our Sonos system.   These appear to be albums that were purchased after the Windows 10 2004 update earlier in the year (but this may be a red herring)

I've therefore carried out searches in Windows Explorer for the albums and to all intents and purposes the albums are not on my PC.   However, if I try and play them using iTunes, they play quite happily  ??? ???

Any ideas?

Technical Help / Windows 10 v 2004/iCloud for Windows
« on: Friday 19 June 20 10:49 BST (UK)  »
For reference:

There is a new version of Windows 10 being rolled out (version 2004).   If you use iCloud for Windows, you may find that it no longer works correctly and may not integrate to Microsoft 365 Outlook.

The solution is to uninstall iCloud for Windows, restart the computer and then reinstall iCloud for Windows.

I think this is three time in the last 4 Windows upgrades there have been problems.

Technical Help / Converting .avi files to .mp4 COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 25 April 20 10:55 BST (UK)  »
As the title says, I have a number of .avi files that were the result of video editing from the 1990's and 2000's.   I've just discovered that our television no longer supports the .avi format (nice of Toshiba to tell customers).   I therefore want to convert the files to .mp4.   There appear to be many different programs that can do this - has anyone got a preference from personal experience?   I'd prefer to use a freebie as this will be a one off exercise, but I'm not too bothered if it has to be a paid for program - results are the key for me.

Thanks in advance.

Edit:

It would appear that my video editing software has an obscure function that allows this - I'm going to try it, but in the meantime, I would appreciate recommendations

Technical Help / MS Outlook unable to access gmail
« on: Sunday 15 September 19 19:10 BST (UK)  »
I have run MS Outlook for many years to access a number of email accounts across a number of platforms.   Since yesterday, I am unable to access either of my gmail accounts - a security warning is returned from gmail and a generic message appears in Outlook.   All other accounts are working as expected.

Looking at Windows update, it would appear that there were 5 updates installed yesterday (we had just returned from holiday):

KB4516115 - this seems to be a security update for Flash Player
KB4514359 - a cumulative for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8
KB4475599 - a security update for MS Office
KB4464566 - a security update for MS Office
KB4515384 - a cumulative update for Windows 10.

I am assuming that the likely culprit is one of the security updates for Office, but can't find anything on the web to help.  Short of uninstalling each in turn, has anybody any suggestions?
