Completed Census Requests / 1911 help needed - can't find family
« on: Saturday 11 April 09 14:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I was wondering if anyone out there could help me search the 1911 census? I've spent the last two days trying to find my granddad and his mother to no avail, though I know they should be there. I think it might be a case of me looking but not seeing! So I hope a fresh pair of eyes may be more successful. Fingers crossed.

The details are -
Ralph Pattison Crowther b.1910 Amble, Northumberland,
His mother - Jane Ann Crowther b.1880 Durham
There is a chance his older sister is with them - Annie Mcleod Crowther b.1900 Amble, Northumberland.

I have found the dad (Henry Crowther b.1880) and the other son (Joseph Henry Crowther b.1902) living in Amble with Henry's mother and two brothers. Henry lists himself as married and he has helpfully filled in the information regarding children to say that he has three living, so Ralph and Annie should be out there somewhere. I can't really understand why they aren't all together.
From what I know about the family, I would expect to find Ralph in Northumberland, but I'm keeping an open mind!

Were some of the census returns damaged? I was wondering whether some were missing from the collection - unable to be transcribed - and thats why I can't find them?

Many thanks in advance for any help...I'm really stuck!

Family History Beginners Board / Tracing backwards - pre 1837
« on: Sunday 14 May 06 14:37 BST (UK)  »
How do I go about tracing backwards?
I've gathered all my information from all the censuses and looked on the familysearch site, and now i've hit a brick wall.
I''ve been doing my Crowther family tree, and have got as far back as Richard Crowther born circa 1812 in North Bierley, Yorkshire, who married Martha born circa 1819 in Yorkshire. On the familysearch site I found a possible marriage record - Richard Crowther and Martha Best married 2 October 1834 at St.Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire. How do I now find out who Richard's parents were and if he had any siblings?
Thank you for any help,
Jacdee

Is it just me or are the sites having probs?

The Common Room / A bit of a puzzle - any ideas welcome!
« on: Saturday 18 March 06 16:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've got a bit of a puzzle which i've been pondering over for a while and wonder if anyone else has any theories or suggestions really.
My grandad and his siblings went into an orphanage around 1918 (my grandad always told me he went between the ages of 8-10, and he was born in 1910). Grandad said both his parents had died young, around the same time, which was why they went to the orphanage.
Straight forward enough. But here comes the puzzle....
Grandad's dad - Henry - died in 1914. So that fits with what i've been told.
Grandad's mum - Jane - had another child in 1918, who died almost straight away. I then assumed that Jane may have also died around the time of the birth, and that would fit really well with the time scale that my Grandad had given me. But things are never that simple are they?! I searched the BMD for Janes death, and found one possibility, but it was in 1925. Afer um-ing and ah-ing i decided to buy the certificate. Well, its arrived and it is definately my Jane (it states she was the widow of Henry and his occupation was listed and it all matched).

So my puzzle is this - Why did my grandad and his siblings end up in an orphanage in 1918 when his mother was still alive (and lived for a further 7 years until 1925) ?
My grandad was told that his mother had died.
Is it possible that Jane's children were taken away from her after the birth of her illegitimate child in 1918?
Or do you think she just gave them up?

Any other theories would be great as i'm just going round in circles on this one!

P.S Sorry it's so long winded!!

The Common Room / most popular names - is there a list?
« on: Sunday 26 February 06 12:26 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there is a 'top ten' type of list of the most popular childrens names for the late 1800's?
I'm just wondering how common some of my ancestors names would of been. Alot of them seemed to stick to the family names of John, William, Henry, Mary and Elizabeth etc, but there are a few who decided to be different and use Lewis, Cuthbert, Minnie and Emma.
I know there are lists for babies born in the 2000's, but do lists exist for the other centuries?

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1891 look up HAWTHORN
« on: Friday 24 February 06 18:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Would someone be able to find this family for me in 1891?

This is what i have in 1881 -
Living at 263 Wapping Road, Bradford, Yorkshire
Alfred Hawthorn 49, Head, Gardener
Lavinia Hawthorn 42, Wife
John Alfred 22, Son
Mary 19, daug
Martha 18, daug
David ?, son (should be 16)
Thomas 12, son
Eliza 10, daug
Richard 6, son
Lavinia 4, daug
Emily 1, daug

All the children were born in Bradford, and i suspect they would still be in Bradford in 1891.

Alfred died in 1882 and Lavinia died in 1883, so i'm keen to know what happened to the younger children, and wether they stayed with their older siblings.

Thank you for any help,
Jacdee

Northumberland / Hepburn Farm
« on: Sunday 19 February 06 12:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,
Does anyone know anything about Hepburn Farm, near Chillingham, Northumberland?
I've just received a death cert for my great grandmother and it states she died at Hepburn Farm in 1925. It also says her occupation was Housekeeper.
Would she of been a housekeeper at the farm or would the farm simply have been her dwellings, near to where she actually worked?
I've tried googling Hepburn farm, but didn't get much back.

Thanks for any info

The Common Room / merchant navy training ships
« on: Friday 17 February 06 15:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Does any one know of a website where i can find information about merchant navy training ships?
My great uncle was sent onto a training ship when he and his siblings were taken to an orphanage (my great uncle was too old for the orphanage at the age of 14). It would of been around 1916, give or take a couple of years.
They were living in Northumberland at the time, but I don't know where the training ship would of been docked at?
Also, do you think that the training ship would of kept records of the boys they took in?

Thanks for any help,
Jacdee
